One story that flies under the radar this offseason is the health of the Redskins' offensive line. 4 of their starting linemen have had surgeries since January, including C Casey Rabach (labrum) and LT Chris Samuels (right MCL & elbow). Rabach also crashed his ATV and had yet another surgery to repair a major calf/ankle wound. RT Jon Jansen had his 2nd thumb stabilization surgery and will have to wear a special brace in '06. RG Randy Thomas suffered a nasty broken leg last December and is still limited 6 months later. Head trainer Bubba Tyer added that Thomas "almost" needed shoulder surgery too. Key reserve G/C Cory Raymer, one of their underrated players, was let go after his labrum surgery. Then Washington didn't draft an O-lineman until round #7. With all of the o-line injuries does Portis still rank in the top five?

Linemen have surgery all the time. I wouldn't worry too much about that. Recent reports have been that Thomas is recovering nicely and they fully expect their starting five OL to be ready to go.

Thats what I had gathered too. Depth at Oline is something hardly any team has and injuries to one of the key cogs can kill any of the top RBs just as easily as the next. I don't worry about this kind of thing too much.

Yeah you got that report from Draftsharks I saw it this morning. They are the only site to mention this, ... off-season surgeries are no big deal but I have to say that's an alarming list on the off. line. Portis also got really beat up at the end there.

 Well then Portis must be one bad dude to play so well beat up. Look at his final 5 game stretch!

:lmao: Raymer's been washed up for a couple of years. I dreaded him in the lineup.

Omg did you see him in the playoffs he was a useless limp. He's got mileage for a young dude- I hope I don't get #5 or 6 pick bc I want someone else to take him.

He had an injured shoulder after he flattened Derrick Brooks (knocked him woozy as I recall) on a blitz pickup in the wild card game. The condition he was in afterwards was not reflective of his condition late in the season.

Here's Portis' numbers after Randy Thomas went down along with the opponent and their defensive rank against YPC:

Code:
Opp YPC Att Yds TDNYG 12 27 108 1PHI 10 27 112 2TB 2 16 53 1SEA 6 17 41 0
Portis carried the team into the playoffs. With Brunell's known injury and lack of a passing attack, TB and SEA really stacked the line.

Jansen didn't miss a game last year even when he was wearing casts on both hands because of two broken thumbs. If you've never broken a finger (or any bone for that matter) before it may be hard to truly appreciate this accomplishment. As others have said, off season surgeries happen. Everyone is expected to be ready to play come week 1.

According to a Redskins Asst Coach I speak with on a regular basis, right now they are more concerned with Derrick Dockery showing up at OTA's with 100 Lbs of fat on his body moreso than either Thomas and Rabach, who are both progressing in a positive manner in their injury rehabs...take it for what it's worth...

Maybe Dockery plans to eat holes in the defensive line for Portis to run through.
