Possible June 1 Cap Casualties (1 Viewer)

• WR David Patten, Washington: The nine-year veteran signed a five-year, $13 million deal with the Redskins last spring that included a $3.5 million signing bonus. But Patten played in just nine games and posted only 22 receptions for 217 yards, with two touchdowns. The acquisitions of veterans Brandon Lloyd and Antwaan Randle El this spring means Patten is probably no better than a No. 4 or No. 5 receiver. And his 2006 base salary of $1.085 million is a little pricey for that role.

• LB Dexter Coakley, St. Louis: With a $1.5 million base salary for 2006, Coakley could find it tough to keep his job if the new Rams staff decides the younger Brandon Chillar is a better fit on the weakside. The classy Coakley is a terrific leader, but he played in just 12 games in 2006 because of injuries and posted only 38 tackles after signing a five-year, $14 million contract.

• DE Bobby Hamilton, Oakland: The 12-year veteran is 34 years old and, while he remains a solid enough player versus the run, the Raiders want to get former first-rounder Tyler Brayton on the field more now that they have ended his experiment at linebacker. Hamilton is due a $1.335 million base salary.

• LB Kailee Wong, Houston: The switch to the 4-3 could hurt Wong, because it means one fewer starting spot, and the Texans have upgraded their depth at the position. Houston signed Wong to a four-year contract extension last summer and his total deal was worth $17.65 million. One consideration: Wong suffered a season-ending patella tendon injury after just five games in 2006, and, for grievance reasons, the Texans might have to wait until he is fully rehabilitated if they choose to release him.

Okay folks...who wants 'em?

The Skins would've loved to get two TDs out of him, but they didn't. He had one that was called back for offensive PI, but that's as close as he got to the endzone.

I think Patten sealed his fate when he made some less-than-happy remarks about the team after they signed Lloyd and Randle El.

Patriots are always interested in veteran players with an axe to grind.

They have the Cap $$.

They have a history of doing it with cast offs.

Maybe Coakley or Wong? Any WR cap hits?

and from TSN:

SS Derrick Gibson, Raiders

S Mike Logan, Steelers

DT John Thornton, Bengals

(they also listed Coakley, Hamilton, and Patten, as well as Steve McNair)

I'd be shocked if they cut Fred June 1. They're well under the cap. They have no incentive to spread any cap hit over 2 years. They have Greg Jones, Labrandon Toefield, "LaptopGate's" Maurice Drew, and Alvin Pearman. That's not exactly an impressive bunch of backups, and two of them are 5-10 or shorter.

Even in a worst-case scenario, they bring Fred into training camp and see what the weight difference means in the preseason.

Is it posible Dwight Smith of N.O. can be a cap casualty. They are saying they don't need him, and Tampa may trade for him. If so, Tampa should just wait for him to get cut IMo.

Wong could be a fit for the Patriots. Locker room leader. LB with 3-4 experience. Decent pass-rusher. Versatility to play inside or outside.

Might be a servicable replacement for Willie McGinest.

Kailee Wong

I could see Wong going to Miami. Capers is there and they run a 3-4. They also tried to trade for Courtney Watson of the Saints, but the deal fell through.

New England is also a good possibility.

And I could see him staying in Houston.

Boddy Hamilton

I could see him going to the Browns. Has a history with Romeo.

Possibly NYJ or NE as well.

Dwight Smith

I do not foresee the Saints cutting him.

The Bucs want to trade for him, and they have no rush to dump him.

I don't get the talk about Dwight Smith being cut or traded. He was really productive for the Saints last year and has been throughout his career. He led the team in solo tackles and 4th in combined tackles. With Bellamy older and recovering from injury, he seems like a leading candidate for cuts. Bullocks played well in the backfield as a rookie. Adding Stoutmire, Scott and Harper in the offseason makes it Safety position awfully full. I remember Smith was interested in playing CB at one point last season. Given the lack of depth at that position, I can see him moving over.

David Patten may not get cut.

This year, the Redskins are not expected to release any veteran players after June 1. Of course, that could change should another team release a veteran player that would be of interest to the Redskins' personnel staff.

Asked recently about adding to the roster after June 1, head coach Joe Gibbs said: "Any way we can get a player, we're going to do it. We're going to be alert. The June cuts have become less and less [significant], though.

"If we feel like we have a need, we'll be ready to do something. It's an opportunity to improve your team and you try to make the most of it. You never can tell when a real good player is going to become available."

Another reason the Redskins would be forced to release a player post-June 1 is if the team needs cap space to sign draft picks. That's not expected to be an issue, however.

I seriously doubt Smith is cut. He can play safety and corner. The recent additions at safety seem to indicate the backfield will be crowded and someone will have to go. Smith may be the most marketable in a trade due to his ability to play both positions - and, IIRC, Bellamy is a favorite in the locker room.

I can see Smith traded for the right price, or he stays, but not cut.

I'd like to see the Pats take a run at Hamilton. He's be a be a nice veteran backup to go with the youngsters. He knows the system and is well respected by the coaches and players. It would be a very smooth transistion for him and the team. The same can be said for Patten as well.

This makes sense. I really like Smith's play on the field. His flexibility does make him an asset to most teams. However, I think given Fred Thomas history of injury and inconsistent play last year, his value to the Saints precludes his being cut or traded (sure, if a great offer came along but short of that...). McKenzie and Craft are the only experienced guys at CB, so Smith is almost a necessity to have. I have to think that Bellamy is the odd man out. While he's popular among the players, he's older, a step slow to begin with and coming back from injury. I can see recent additions of Stoutmire and Scott, as well as the drafting of Harper, as signalling a change but that's got to be a year away. Scott was a special teamer for the Falcons. Stoutmire is experienced depth. Harper and Bullocks might be the future but that's not this season.
