SEASIDE PARK - The beach and boardwalk in Seaside Park have been evacuated due to a pipe bomb explosion in a trash can, which came moments before a major charity race was set to begin.

Official sources tell News 12 New Jersey that two unexploded pipe bombs have also been found.

Residents in the area are being ordered to stay indoors as authorities search the area for more suspicious items. The police response is now focusing on the area of Ocean Avenue and D Street.

Runners in the charity race had been scheduled to pass by the area at the time of the blast, but the event had coincidentally been delayed due to a suspicious backpack found nearby.

No injuries were reported.

The race was a Semper Five event for U.S. Marines. The explosion occurred around 9:30 a.m., the same time that the race had been set to begin. The site of the blast was about three-quarters of a mile from the initial starting line.

The suspicious backpack that delayed the race was spotted by a passerby who reported it. That backpack was found near a couple of garbage cans, but was later claimed by a high school runner and was not related to the explosion.

Authorities had relocated race runners to a different area so they could investigate the suspicious backpack, and that is when the blast went off. A shorter "fun run" event for youth runners had also just ended when the blast occurred.

A photo of the garbage can where the blast occurred was snapped by witness Chad Rudin. It shows that the bottom of the can had been completely blown off. Rudin says he was a couple blocks away from the blast site, but assumed it was to signal the start of the 5K race when he heard it. He walked over and snapped the photo of the garbage can as police began to arrive.

Another witness who spoke with News 12 said he was about a quarter of a mile away from the site of the explosion. He heard it from his location and saw a puff of white smoke rise about 30 to 35 feet in the air.

The 5K race has now been cancelled.

About 3,000 people, including 1,600 runners, had been in the area at the time for the event, which is highly supportive and celebratory of U.S. military service members.

This is a breaking news story. News 12 has a crew at the scene. Stay with News 12 for more information as it becomes available.

Wow.

Possible? Not sure what else would qualify it any more :P

Good thing the race was delayed or it would have been pretty terrible. Not sure what the perpetrator was thinking but the Marines are probably not in the top 5 of people I want to piss off. Good luck slappy, you're going to need it.
