Post your league's rules here - looking for ideas from other leagu (1 Viewer)

I'm less interested in scoring systems and lineup requirements.

I'm more interested in how many teams make the playoffs, how do you determine who makes the playoffs? Just record? power ranking?

how does the money get distributed if you have an entry fee... winner take all? winner, runner up, points leader?

do you have a prize for toilet bowl winners? do you do a toilet bowl?

how do you do waivers? trades?

Post your league constitution if you have one, i'm interested.

I'm especially interested if you run an auction league - i really don't know how to set one of those up, but it seems awesome.

Here's the link to our current season's rules on MFL: League Rules

It's not an auction league, but I think it pretty well covers everything. BTW, if you see something it doesn't, feel free to let me know!

thanks for posting that, those are some unique rules.

I like the victory points idea - that's interesting.

4 divisions of 3 teams is an odd choice... 3 of 4 seems a lot easier work with.

interesting payout structure also... seems complicated.. and you probably have to write out a lock of checks

Payout runs all season, so it's just one check per owner at the end of the season. As for the 4 divisions, we previously had 2 conferences with a wild-card team from each conference. Owners didn't like that after a couple years, so we dropped the conferences.

Additionally, a 13-week regular season works out nicely with a total of 4 division games (2 against each of the other 2 teams in your division) and then one game against each of the other 9 teams in the league.

i hear ya... as commish if i had to write out more than 3 checks at the end of the season i'd be hacked... especially if everyone got paid.

if i put in $100 into a league and got like $12 back, i'd lol.

i get teh smoothness of the schedule with 4 divisions... but i bet with that many divisions that sometimes you get some absolutely dreadful division winners that don't deserve to make the playoffs.

i've often considered moving my league back to 2 divisions of six, or just one big division.

Best, most fair League/Playoff structure ever. The best team tends to win. The regular season has meaning and head to head lucky playoff week factor is removed. Our bonus points are high because we start 2 QB's 3 RB's and 4 WR's.

10 Teams - All Play - no divisions - 12 week regular season

PLAYOFFS

Wk. 13

Bye Bowl- First plays second. First gets 6 bonus pts over second. Winner

Four-way Wildcard- Third, fourth, fifth and six play, w/ third getting 18

It really reads more complicated than it is. Top 6 get in...1 plays 2 for a bye. 3-4-5-6 play in a 4 way wildcard. Top 2 from that play the loser of the bye bowl (1-2 game). From there the lowest score of the 3 is eliminated each week until you get to the superbowl. Soooooo much better than a traditional playoff system, imo.

We are in a free 12 team H2H yahoo league (yahoo also has a free auction draft option that is pretty cool). Our starting roster is 1QB, 2RBs, 3WRs, 1Flex (QB,RB,WR, or T), 2TEs,K,1LB,1DL,1DB,3IDP Flex,1 Def Team. The bench is only for 6 players-this will encourage more activities and less hoarding.

Draft is a modified serpentine in which rounds 3-4, 7-8, 11-12, 15-16, 19-20, and 21 are reversed serpentine. This will help the lower drafting teams.

There are two types of first place finish. One is for the best record after 17 weeks. The other is the winner of our playoff from weeks 13-16 (top 4 seeds get a bye). Yahoo Football league playoff setting is turned off and we use pencil-paper method for playoff matchup. We also have weekly prizes. One week it might starting QB with most passing yards and the next might be a starting RB with the most receiving yards, etc.

~Fees~

The fee for each team is $90. $15 goes towards the cost of the website and will be paid to Dave since he used his credit card to renew it. The rest ($75) goes into final pot at the end of the season. #### league pickem'.

~Transactions~

Trades: All trades must meet the final approval of the commish(es). Sein and Rich will approve each and every trade. Sein will approve Rich’s trades and vice versa. If there is a major dispute it will be the commish discretion to institute a league wide vote for that particular trade only. A trade will only be disapproved if it appears that one team is being assisted far more than the other. There have been a few of these over the years. The trade deadline is Saturday, Dec 5th at 11:59pm.

Add/Drops: Owners can place a maximum of 3 add/drop requests in the initial claims period. Claims are considered in the order they are placed. If an owner places more than one claim, the one placed first will get first preference. The Initial Claims period will be from the end of MNF till Wed 9:00pm. I will manually enter the add/drops. Worse record gets precedence with total points being the tiebreaker. A maximum of 3 add/drops per week total. After the initial claims period, it will be first come first serve till next week's gametime.

~Teams~

We have 10 teams in the league once again. Each team is given 20 roster spots. There will be two divisions just as there was last year. Divisions are merely symbolic. They are meant to promote trash-talking and make it easier for me to make a schedule.

~Rosters~

Starting Positions:

2 QB

2 RB

3 WR

1 TE

1 K

1 DEF/ST

1 Flex (RB/WR/TE)

Quarterback Rule:

- 4 Starting QBs allowed per roster

- 4 Backups of ANY team per roster (2nd or 3rd string)

- 8 maximum QB's per roster

- If there are more than 4 starting QBs on the roster at the start of the game week, the last added starting QB will be automatically dropped from the roster for that week's play.

- Can not draft more than 4 KNOWN starting QBs. If a QB becomes a starter after the draft, you will be given time to drop as many as needed to get down to 4 Starting QBs per roster.

Starting Lineups must be submitted 5 minutes before gametime. Note that some games start on Thurs and Sat. Be advised and make sure you have the players you want playing in your starting lineup 5 minutes before those games. No excuses will be accepted after the fact for roster screwups.

There is NO IR LIST!!! You can use your 20 roster spots as you please. You must have at least 15 players on the roster at all times. You can have as many injured players on your roster as you see fit. I wouldnt recommend hanging onto too many injured players but owners have discretion over their teams.

~Post-Season~

Format: Top 6 teams make the playoffs. Top 2 teams get the byes regardless of division standings. Simple playoff format of 3v6, 4v5 and then winners play 1 and 2 according to record.

Tiebreakers:

1. Winning Pct

2. Head to Head

3. Total Points

4. Division Record

5. Points Against

Date: The playoffs will begin Week 14.

Toilet Bowl:The 4 teams that do not make the playoffs will still have something to play for. A little thing that has been forgotten – PRIDE! They will have their own playoff. It will be 7v10 and 8v9. The winners will play for the title of "Toilet Bowl Champion!" They also win $20. Should buy a couple of pints to wallow the sorrows of another failed season in.

~Prize Money~

League Champion - $550 and a trophy!

2nd Place - $100

Highest Total Points for the season (16 games) - $50

Highest points for 1 game - $30

Toilet Bowl Champion - $20

~Scoring~

Scoring is all laid out in the "Rules" Section under the "League Home" tab. Plus if your reading this, then all you need to do is look up, #######.

~#1 Rule~

Talk-Trash, rip your buds, make fun of their pickups and above all Have some ####### fun. Thats what Fantasy Football is all about. This is our time to spend with our buds watching the sport we love and cry when they dont go for the TD in the 4th quarter up by 27 points. Its about getting drunk and hanging out at the bar watching the Eagles win but glancing over to watch the Cleveland/Houston game cause you got the 3rd string WR. Its about perplexing our women every week about how we can get wrapped up in such a "dumb sport." Its about Fun, plain and simple. So live it up, #####es!!!

Draft: 16 Rounds – you can pick your players at positions you desire (make sure to meet the minimum lineup requirements)

Starting Lineups: 1 QB, 1 RB, 2 WR’s, 1 TE, 1 K, 1 Def. and 1 flex position of either a RB, WR, or TE.

Playoff Week 15 - Seed #1 plays lowest remaining seed, Seed #2 plays the other surviving team.

I love 2 QB's. Way more fun during the draft and the season. Adds alot more strategy to a position thats forgotten in most standard leagues. As far as the points champ goes, we never really put emphasis on the most points. Its all about winning the whole show. Just our personal preference. Bonus for distance on TD's can make or break a game. I like it because it rewards big plays.

12-team league, 6 playoff spots. First 5 spots determined in normal fashion (division winners, best records, tie-breakers, etc.). 6th spot goes to best "breakdown" record of the remaining teams, the record a team would have if they played every team every week. Eliminates some of the whining about getting bad luck with matchups.

2010 Constitution

Preamble

The commissioner hereby sets down these rules in writing to eliminate controversy and to establish consistency in this league now entering its ninth year of operation. All players shall abide by the guidelines in the spirit of fair play and healthy competition.

Section I: League Format

12 teams separated into 3 divisions. The divisions and team nominating order will be chosen at random one week before the auction draft. The auction draft will take place before the NFL season begins. Teams will play head to head for a 13 week season, with the playoffs taking place in NFL weeks 14-15-16. Six teams will make the playoffs and be seeded by their final records. See Playoffs in Section X for the format. Aside from being ranked by head to head records, teams will also be ranked by overall points. Much of the prize money is given to the top three in points. See Prizes in Section III.

Section II: Fees and Prizes:

The entry fee for each team will be $55 with $5 per team going toward the service that will be used to track data. As this is now a keeper league, in order to keep the integrity of the league from year to year, each team will be required to pay for two years in advance for a total of $105. Before the beginning of each year, dues for one year will be due keeping each team paid up for that year and the next.

If someone decides that they want to leave the league, they have to let the commish know ASAP to give him ample time to find a replacement. If an acceptable replacement can be found in time who is willing to take on the full financial burden of the existing team, the original team owner will receive a full refund. If the initial owner screwed up his team bad enough that no one else is interested in it for full price, a new owner’s financial burden will be subsidized by the original owner’s forward payments in order to keep the league going. The commish promises to make a good faith effort to get the new owner to pay as much as possible of the fees to the departing owner will get as much of his money back as possible. The departing owner will not lose more than 50% of the money that they have paid forward. There are no additional fees for trades or free agent acquisitions. All money is due on draft day. The payoffs will break down like this:

Overall Winner $180

Overall 2nd: $ 80

Overall 3rd: $ 40

Superbowl Winner: $130

Superbowl Loser: $ 50

Survivor Winner: $ 80

Survivor Loser: $ 30

Toiletbowl Winner: $ 10

Overall 1st, 2nd, and 3rd will go to the teams with the highest total points through week #16.

Superbowl winner and runner-up will be decided in the playoffs.

In the Survivor Competition, the team with the lowest score each week is eliminated. (This is totally separate from the overall points competition and the playoffs, even if you get kicked off in the first week you are still in for overall points and playoffs prizes) The competition will begin with the first team being kicked out after the week 3 games. (Based only on the team scores in week 3) The final 2 teams left will face off in week 13. I think its a good prelude to the playoffs which will start the week after on week 14. If two or more teams tie for the lowest score, the scores from the previous week will be used as the deciding factor, with lowest score still being eliminated. If somehow they were also tied in the previous week, we will keep going back until we have a lower score.

Toiletbowl winner will be decided in the Toiletbowl playoffs that will start off with the 6 teams that did not make the Superbowl playoffs. The Toiletbowl playoffs will be setup just like the real playoffs but with the remaining six teams.

Section III: Auction Draft

All managers must be present at the auction draft. The Draft will be in the Auction format for 2010. All teams will start the Initial League Auction with $200 to build their respective roster. In subsequent years all teams will start the Auction with $200 minus the combined salaries for all Contracted Players and plus or minus any $$ traded for or away.

All Teams must have 18 players at the conclusion of the Auction.

The following players are eligible for the Auction: Any player currently listed on an NFL teams rosters or who appeared on an NFL team roster the previous season.

The team bidding first opens with a salary bid of at least $1 for any eligible player and the bidding proceeds at minimum increments of $1 until only one bidder is left. That team acquires the nominated player for the final bid amount. The process is repeated, with successive owners nominating players to be bid on, until every team has acquired a squad of 18 players and can field a starting lineup.

No team may make a bid for a player it cannot afford. For example, a team with $3 left and two openings on its roster is limited to a maximum bid of $2 for one player. (Leaving $1 for the other unfilled roster spot.)

The salary of a player acquired in the auction is his final bid amount. The salary of a player added from the free agent pool or waivers is $5.

Section IV: Rosters & Keepers:

Each manager will be given 18 roster spots for draft day. 18 is the maximum number of players any roster can have at any one time (including injured players). There is no specification on the number of players at any particular position. You can have as many or as few as desired. The salary of a player acquired in the auction is his auction price. The salary of a player acquired through the Free Agent process is $5. Starting lineup is 1 QB, 2 RB, 2 WR, 1 Flex (RB/WR/TE), 1 TE, 1 K, and 1 Defense.

From season to season, each team may retain up to 3 players. The names of the players being retained must be submitted to the Commissioner each year by midnight exactly one week before the next auction. No trades may take place from the time the protected rosters are due until the auction. If a player is significantly injured between keeper declaration and the start of the auction, it will be up to the Appeals Committee to allow the player to be removed or possibly replaced.

If a player is kept, his salary will be raised by $5 each year. Trades do not affect the salary of a player. The trade deadline (See Section VIII) will also be the last date that you will be able to keep players added to your roster. In other words, players added to your roster after the trade deadline cannot be kept for the next year.

Section V: Points

Offensive Points:

Touchdown 6

PAT 1

FG (39 or less) 3

FG (40-49) 4

FG (50+) 5

Example: 59 yards rushing = 5.9 points

Negative yardage totals will lead to negative points.

Example: -11 rushing yards = -1 point

Section VI: Playoffs

Teams will make and be ranked in the playoffs by the following system:

1. The three division winners will make the playoffs and be ranked by record and tiebreakers below.

2. The top three teams of all twelve in scoring will next make the playoffs and be ranked by scoring.

(If any of top 3 are also division winners, no further spots will be awarded past #3 for scoring)

3. Any remaining spots will go to the best records regardless of division ranked by record and tiebreakers below.

The teams will be seeded 1 through 6 and the bracket will be set like so:

First Week (Week 14)

Byes: First Place and Second Place

P1: Third Place vs. Sixth Place

P2: Fourth Place vs. Fifth Place

Second Week (Week 15)

P5: First Place vs. Winner P2

P6: Second Place vs. Winner P1

Third Week (Week 16)

The teams will be seeded 1-6 based on record. See Tie Breakers in section VII.

Section VII: Playoff Tie Breakers

If two or more players finish with the same overall record, the following system will be used to break the tie:

1. Total Season Points

2. Head to Head Record

In the event that a playoff game ends in a tie, the deadlock will be broken using the following system:

1. Most Bench Points

2. Most Touchdowns Scored

NOTES:

When breaking a tie in a playoff game, the only statistics used will be from that specific game.

Section VIII: Trades

Trades are open to any team and any number of players. Players and draft dollars are the only items that may be traded. Players may not be traded in lieu of any other commodities.

Trades involving players and/or Auction Dollars are permitted under the following stipulation:

Traded Auction Dollars can only be used/applied to the NEXT year’s auction.

Permitted:

• Team 1 trades Peyton Manning to Team 2 for $20 2011 Auction Dollars on October 5th 2010.

Not Permitted:

• Team 1 trades Manning to Team 2 for $10 2012 & $10 2011 Auction Dollars on October 5th 2010.

Any trades involving Auction Dollars can be handled through the League Website. Simply select the players involved in the trade and include a message in the trade listing the Auction Dollars involved.

The trade deadline is kickoff of the first game on week 11. No trades can be made between the deadline and the end of the NFL Regular season. Trading will again be permitted after the Regular season has ended until two weeks prior to the next seasons’ draft. The trade deadline will also be the last date that you will be able to keep players added to your roster. In other words, players added to your roster after the trade deadline cannot be kept for the next year.

If any Owner feels that a trade which has occurred within the league is going to be detrimental to the league they can appeal the trade to the Appeals Committee. An Appeal E-mail must be sent by the Appealing Owner to each Committee member within 24 hours of the trade being processed by the website. If an Appeal E-mail is not received by the above deadline the trade is upheld.

Appeals Committee:

• The Appeals Committee will be made up of two league members as voted by the returning league members at the draft and the commissioner. There will also be two alternate Committee members for when an Appeals Committee member(s) is/are involved in the disputed trade. The Appeals Committee, when called upon to review a trade, will have 24 hours to examine the written appeal submitted and render a verdict. A majority vote of 2-1 will determine the outcome of the appeal.

Appeals Committee Members:

• At the draft the returning league members will submit their top 4 candidates, numbered 1 thru 4, for the Appeals Committee. Each list will be awarded points on a 4 to 1 scale (candidate # 1 gets 4 points, candidate # 2 gets 3 points, etc…). The two league owners who receive the most points are appointed to the Appeals Committee. The next two highest point totals will become the Appeals Committee alternates.

Section IX: Free Agents

Unowned players who have cleared waivers are free agents and are available on a first-come, first-serve basis. Claimed players are immediately added to your bench. The salary of a player added from the free agent pool or waivers is $5, if kept, it will go to $10 in the following year.

You can drop players without replacing them, but you can only pick up players without dropping anyone if you have less than the maximum number of players on your roster. You will never be allowed to exceed your league's roster limit.

If you drop a player from your roster, he will immediately be placed on waivers. You will then not be allowed to reclaim the player until after the two-day waiver period expires.

After the draft, all unselected players will be placed on waivers, with those left unclaimed then being treated as free agents. These players will be available from after the draft through the end of the regular season. The free agent pool will then be off limits until the following auction.

Section X: Waivers

All players dropped from a team's roster are immediately placed on waivers. During this two-day waiver period anyone in the league can claim the player.

If more than one coach claims the same player, the team that is highest on the Waiver Priority List is given the rights to the player. The priority list is initially set based on the reverse of the draft order. However, each time you add a waived player to your roster, you are pushed to the back of the list.

If you place a claim on more than one waived player at a time, each pending transaction will appear on your Team Page along with its current position in your waiver order. All new claims are appended to the end of the list, but you can alter this priority by viewing each pending claim and changing its priority in the box provided.

Section XI: Toilet Bowl

The toilet bowl will be used to put all of the non-playoff teams in competition for a consolation prize. The six non-playoff teams will be ranked 1 to 6 by overall record and will play a 3-week bracket tourney mirroring the real playoffs. See playoff format in sections VI and VII.

Our league started out as a conventional standard scoring league, but it's changed quite a bit over the years. I won't get too detailed, so here is a quick summary:

1/2 point PPR and we have IDPs

12 teams @ $200 buy-in, 4 make the playoffs. We pay the top 4 teams. Teams 5-8 have a two-game playoff to see who gets to play for fourth place, which is the winner from the 5-8 bracket versus the playoff loser from the first two rounds.

We also hold a tournament that runs during the NFL playoffs. The top 10 teams make it to the NFL tournament. We do this keep teams interested. Playoff payout is $250.

So, we have five payouts in total: Champ, Runner-up, Third place Consolation Bowl, 4th place gets their money back, and Playoff tournament. The Champ gets around 50% of the pot.

Our draft is a combination of an auction draft and snake draft. The snake draft is for defensive players, kickers, and team defenses. We hold it a week earlier than our auction draft to save time on auction night and to drum up a little hype before our draft.

Our auction draft is a combo of 12-24 blind bids and the rest is open bidding.

Everyone in our league seems to love the format. It's a bit different, but fun.

Breakdown is a great statistic.Power Ranking is along the same lines, it incorporates points, breakdown, and record.Breakdown is certainly the ultimate ranking of your team's consistency relative to the rest of the league.I feel so strongly that head to head matchups are a bunk way of determining a fantasy team's worth that we do 4 spots ranking and 2 spots from power ranking. Also one of the reasons we reward the total points leader so heavily... leagues are just ripe with tons of stories of some crap team qualifying for the playoffs and getting hot and/or lucky. My team won a title last year that had no business being anywhere near the championship game... I actually felt bad winning and it was bad for the league. It was like going all in with A6 and getting called by AA and the flop coming 662Absolutely disgusting. But the nice part was that the guy who finished runner up also won the points so he got paid more than I did... and I'm pleased it goes like that.I however, do get the trophy and name on the banner.... but it's not really fun to win when you know it's a total luckfest.I want to win with the best team.. and preferably by a large margin so there's absolutely no talk or debate about the victory...

We tend to tinker with the lineup requirements each year to keep things fresh. Here is what we have this year:

Start:

QB, 2 RB, 2 WR, 2 WR/TE, Def (5 bench)

Notes: NO KICKERS. Kickers are a crap shoot anyway, and everyone waits until the end of the draft/auction...why bother? No TE required, but two can be played.

Scoring:

4 pt TD pass, 1/25 yd pass, 1/10 yard rush/rec, defense scores for sacks, turnovers, and TDs (nothing based on points or yards against), no negatives for INT or fumbles

Owners:

12 teams, 6 make playoffs, 4 divisions of 3 teams each

Notes: byes to two best records in regular season. The schdule works well for the 4x3 style (play division mates twice and every other team once for a 12 game schedule). We also award a second W/L each week depending on scoring for the week. Top 6 scores each week get a W and bottom 6 get a loss (so total season is 24 games).

We have a $40 entry fee. $250 to first, $150 to second, $40 to third, and $40 to the single highest weekly score (counts through week 16).

We play a survivor game on the side for $10. We usually have 8 or 9 participants. Winner take all.

We use ESPN's auction room and league admin.

Here are some fun rules for the old school guys who arent ready to join the ranks of PPR, but want some scoring accelerators to make the game more interesting. these will challenge you to think EVEN MORE about the guys u draft.

8 or more recpts RB/TE/WR = 5 points (almost as good as a TD) it will have you screaming for "one more catch" even if its for a loss.

25 or more RB carries = 5 points (same as above and makes guys in non-RBBC programs even better)

70% or above QB completion percentage = 5 points (can make a guy like Orton serviceable)

50 or more yard FG = 5 points not 3. (this one is more random, but can be fun)

Cheers!

Already do the kicker one but the others do intrigue me. Maybe next year for our league.

interesting. I had a league that gave points on completion %.... and another that had bonuses for # of receptions ( i think it was 10)

we dumped all those rules (except the kicker one - i think a lot of people do that) because it made it significantly harder to do projections and use a cheatsheet or the dominator.

I've seen too many 8 catch for 70 yard or 25 carries for 80 yard games or 16/22 for 180 yards to get impressed from "reps" or sompletion %

True. I like to reward players for good football play. Reps doesn't really equate to good play. Besides most of our guys would never get a 6-4 vote on it.

Anyone have experience playing in a best ball league?

Head to head each week. I'm thinking of having starting requirements of:

1 qb

2 rb

3 wr

1 te

1 pk

1 def.

Maybe have a roster size of 18. Any combination you want. Nine bench wr's if you wanted. In this type of scenerio the top three scroes out of your 12 total wr's would play.

Wanted to mix it up this year with my league. I like the added entertainment benefit of having all 18 players active. Plus fantasy is frustrating enough and this may take a bit away.

Sure the strategy of who to start is gone but is it really that significant? Most league I've played in I can pretty much make out everyone's starting lineup the night before.

Think their is much more strategy to be had in roster management in a best-ball type format. Roster 3 qb's? 3 Defenses? Stack RB or WR's depending on your early picks.

Pro's and Con's of this format?
