Amari Spievey-DB-Lions Aug. 26 - 11:43 am et

The Lions have moved rookie Amari Spievey from cornerback to safety.

The third-rounder wasn't impressing anyone with his coverage skills, but the switch could get him closer to playing time. Spievey was an extremely physical corner at Iowa, and he has the requisite instincts and anticipation for safety. Louis Delmas is locked in at free safety, but strong safety is wide open.

What are the chances he is named starting SS? Id like to pick him up well before that happens because I know he would fly off waivers in 2 seconds...

I imagine it will take time for Spievey to adjust to a new position and I really don't see him being named a starter anytime soon. However, anything is possible with the Lions' strong safeties. C.C. Brown has a cast on his hand right now and he really did not play all that well last week. With Brown hurt, Randy Phillips practiced with the starters and is another player to keep an eye on this week. He started for Delmas in the first two games and looked pretty solid. I think Phillips has a chance to start.

I agree with Borbely on Phillips... I think Randy Phillips is going to end up starting ahead of Brown and/or Ko Simpson. Phillips has been taking all the first team reps while Delmas is/was out and I remember reading some nice quotes from Lion coaches about how he is doing and how "instinctive" he is and how he just keeps making plays. I think the Lions secondary coach also coached him in college. Not exactly sure.

I think there was a quote either yesterday or today that said when Delmas came back, that Phillips moved over to SS with the starters. I fully expect the starters to be Delmas & Phillips sooner rather than later.

ETA: Found the "feel-good" story on Phillips that I read recently - http://detnews.com/article/20100819/SPORTS...-Randy-Phillips
