Ok, I am confused. Whay are some of the free agents protected?

I went to pick up Brian Westbrook today and he is showing up as protected.

How does a player, that is a free agent, become protected?

Ahhh, nevermind....I always find the answer right after I post here...Thanks Though.I see that he was released week 10 and therefore cannot be picked up by anyone for the rest of the year.
