PSA: Stay Out Of The Hospital - It Sucks (1 Viewer)

James Daulton

Tuesday evening around 6 I developed sever stomach pain that I hoped would go away with a crap or puke. Neither happened and the pain got worse until I had to have wifey take me to the ER about 4am Wednesday. I sit here now with an obstructed bowel, NG tube, and a few IV lines. Any attempt to move more than a few feet must be carefully orchestrated like some Russian ballet. I'm waiting and hoping that by keeping everything out of my stomach and intestines, they'll untangle themselves without surgical intervention. I've had only ice chips since 6pm Tuesday evening.

There must be some plusses you say. Well, Dilaudid is pretty kick ###, and my room is way nice than my bedroom at home. Plenty of time to watch movies and surf the web on my Surface 3, but having a tube hanging out of your nose just seems to put a damper on these typical enjoyable activities. I should be well on my way to my goal summer weight when this is all said and done though.

Stay healthy FBGs.

I appreciate all the well-wishes fellows. Just got the NG tube pulled. If you've never had an NG tub inserted or removed, I would not recommend it. Truly a horrible feeling. When I first arrived in the ED I had not eaten or drank anything for around 8 hours, by the time I was evaluated by the ED staff and my lab results were back, it was about 12 hours and I was showing as dehydrated. A couple of senior residents (women) wanted to put a catheter in me to make sure my kidneys were still functioning. I told them that I hadn't even tried to drink anything since my stomach felt like ####. They were pretty insistent but a male senior resident intervened and said to hold off a couple of hours to see if I would start passing urine. They reluctantly agreed and of course I passed the IV fluids no problem within a few hours.

If you've never had a catheter inserted, keep it that way. The moral of the story is that men doctors are smarter than women.

I had a Foley catheter inserted when I had a heart procedure done in November. I was knocked out when they put it in but awake when they removed it. Something went horribly wrong. It's not supposed to hurt but when the nurse yanked it out it felt like she turned my #### inside out. I can't overstate the pain, no kick in the balls I've ever received hurt half as much as this did. I'm certain that before pulling it she didn't get all of the air out of the balloon that holds it in place inside the bladder. I wanted to kill her, was pissing razor blades for a week.

Anyway, glad you avoided the catheter and hope you feel better soon. Being in the hospital does suck.

Been lucky my entire life to stay out of those horrible places (other than to visit others). But then again I crap more than most people.

If they had been insistent, I may have refused. After 12 hours of continuous stomach pain and after just getting a tube slipped up my nose, down my throat, and into my stomach, I'd had enough. Luckily the male resident realized that I'm not some 80 year old who would be at-risk of dehydration so soon. I have to spend at least one more night in this place, then if all goes well, it's home tomorrow.

The scariest thing is that this can re-occur at any time apparently. It's obviously not something that happens often, but the adhesions from my prior surgery can always rear up and cause me trouble.

Yep, back in high school I had to have a catheter for a procedure. It hurt going in but was much worse coming out. I think they did something wrong, because ever since then I've dribbled pee every time I piss. Good luck, brotha!

Could have been worse. I went to hospital with severe abdominal pain a couple years ago... turned out to be a ruptured appendix. After emergency surgery I spent 10 days in recovery. The catheter sucked, but the nose tube was 100 times worse.

Good luck man.

Ugghhh. Sorry man, being in the hospital like that is scary. Glad it sounds like you will come out ok. Did they talk to you about long term things you need to do?

I even asked if it were more likely to happen to fat people than fit so I could at least feel good about that. The answer was no.

There's nothing I can do to prevent it. It's just a result of the scar tissue I have from 25 years ago.

Hey GB, no jokes here just sorry to hear you're sick. Get well soon!
This. Heal up soon, JD

Which hospital are you in?
I'm in St. Agnes, they've been fantastic so far (other than wanting to cram a tube up my crank). Hospitals going to all single rooms makes the stay much more palatable than if you have a roommate.
Jeez....you were there in rush hour, then (aka: Saturday night). I lived about a mile from there and I'd wake up on weekend nights if a siren WASN'T blaring on its way there.

Glad you're on the mend and being cared for, my friend. When are you being released?

Hope you get better.

What was the official diagnosis?

Has your diet being crappy lately?
So "obstructed bowels" was the official diagnosis?

What's your age?
I had colon cancer surgery at 21, that was 27 years ago. The thing with the adhesions is that when you have surgery open (which they are were back then) vs laprascopic, you're likely to have much more scar tissue. My incision is about 7 inches long from my naval to the base of my crank.

I just have my first real food in 4 1/2 days (oatmeal), went down pretty well. If I tolerate lunch ok, I'll be out of here today.

The NG tube was sucking all the junk out of my stomach, I'd say the total length was about 2 feet from nose into my stomach.

Thanks again for all the well wishes FBGs. I would not wish this experience on anyone.

Home and upgraded to a soft diet. Tolerating it well so far. No work today or tomorrow, trying for a 1/2 day Wednesday. I'm weak as a kitten with no stamina. Can't workout until next week earliest. Catching up on a ton of tv. What's kind of weird is that I don't feel the typical "urges" at all. I'm not sure what the deal is but this better only be temporary or I'm calling Woz and suing some #####es.

How do you get an obstructed bowel?
Lower bowel. Either you eat some really dense #### that gets clogged in your small intestine, or, like in my case, a prior surgery left you with scar tissue inside your abdomen that can grab and twist your intestines.

Hey JD I just thought I'd drop a note to say I hope you feel better and glad you're outta the joint. Hopefully the FFA can distract you and give you some laughs. -SID

I have had hernia surgery, so I should probably take a note of this. However, it was lithroscopic, with the mesh netting. I don't think there would be much scar tissue.
