QB Carson Wentz, MIN (1 Viewer)

Clearly Carson knows that we dynasty owners need him back ASAP, hence the expedited surgery.
Just heard 3rd stringer QB Nate Sudfeld commenting how conscientious Wentz is.  He mentioned Wentz FaceTiming him, inquiring about new play... AFTER completing his post-op (and being high from pain-reliever).    Dare I say that he's rapidly approaching the level of Peyton Manning / Tom Brady in term of mental obsession to stay within the game?

Carson Wentz (knee) was seen throwing up to 50 yards prior to Super Bowl LII.

No longer confined to crutches, Wentz let it rip during pregame warmups on Sunday, throwing balls up to 50 yards off his back foot. Wentz is making noticeable progress in his recovery from a torn ACL and expects to be ready for Week 1. Despite the injury, the second-year signal caller has promised not to change his style of play.

Too soon to say post-injury. The concern is not the arm/accuracy but how much of a running threat he remains (despite his contention that he won’t change his style).
It was a pretty freak way to tear an ACL.  I don't see it affecting his mobility going forward.  If he's not the top qb going forward, who would you say is? I'm currently rolling with Cam in my dynasty.

 AWESOME!

Props to Carson.

As far as FF is concerned, I hope the injury doesn’t hinder Wentz’ rushing stats.

ACLs are routine nowadays so it’s very unlikely to hamper him physically, but mentally or maybe how the team views it is a different matter.

Any Philly fans with insight as to whether they’ll give Wentz full autonomy on his scrambling (specifically past the LOS)?

Carson Wentz Update: NFL insider says Eagles quarterback is ‘shockingly ahead of schedule’ in his recovery

NFL insider Chris Mortensen appeared on ESPN’s NFL Live on Tuesday afternoon and said Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Carson Wentz is ‘shockingly ahead of schedule’ in his recovery from ACL/LCL injury.

“I’m always one of the skeptics on something like this because it’s a nine-to-12 month recovery from ACL surgery and nine months is right up to that Thursday night opener against the Atlanta Falcons in September.

But, from people inside [the Eagles organization] who were somewhat skeptical, I am hearing that he’s not just ahead of schedule — he’s WAY ahead of schedule.

He even participated a little bit in 7-on-7 yesterday. He’s doing individual drills. He threw a ball 60 yards last week effortlessly. His legs are fast. He’s stronger. And I think now, inside, you’re starting to hear they’re not going to be surprised if he really is ready for that opener.

But Doug Pederson, everybody else publicly will say ‘We’re not rushing him.’ And there is going to be some caution. They don’t have to [rush him]. Certainly, you have to be prepared for any setback.

But right now, he’s not just ahead of schedule ... he is shockingly ahead of schedule.”

My guess is the coaches will try to get Wentz to be smarter about the way he runs. He is the ultimate competitor so he is not afraid to take on defenders. However, that strategy in the long run will (and did) get him hurt. Besides the play he was injured on, he tried to score on the goal line at Seattle last year and took a big hit. I hope and think that he will slide more to protect himself this year, so he may not have quite as many rushing attempts or yards this year. But hopefully he will be on the field 16 games this coming regular season rather than the 13 he played last year.

"In 2018, Foles will earn a base salary of $4,000,000, a signing bonus of $2,000,000, a roster bonus of $3,000,000 and a incentive bonus of $4,000,000, while carrying a cap hit of $13,600,000 and a dead cap value of $8,000,000."

That's a crapload of money for a "backup" QB on essentially a one-year deal.   The money seems to insinuate the Eagles will totally play it safe, no matter how "ahead of schedule"  Wentz actually is.  I would think its even safer to say Wentz doesn't see the field for the first 4 to 6 weeks of the season.   Why risk it when your Super Bowl QB is signed and ready to go?

Ummmm...because Wentz is still the better QB?

And still on his rookie deal, under 3 million for '18. So it's not like they are paying a lot of money at the position.  Plus Foles' number includes the bonus they gave him for the  SB, just because.

According to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport, Carson Wentz (knee) will likely begin training camp on the active/PUP list.

The other option would be to have Wentz avoid the PUP list and practice on a limited basis. Either way, the 25-year-old isn't ready to practice fully coming off last year's ACL surgery. Wentz can be activated off PUP at any time and there's still optimism he'll be ready for Week 1 against Atlanta. Super Bowl MVP Nick Foles should get most of the first-team reps while Wentz works his way back to full health.

Carson Wentz will not start Eagles camp on PUP list

NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport reported Wednesday the star quarterback will avoid the physically unable to perform list. Wentz will be limited in what he can do on the field, but will take part in practices. It's an encouraging step for the 25-year-old talent on the mend from knee surgery.

Prior to Wentz's physical, Eagles leadership mulled a PUP designation knowing the signal-caller wouldn't open at full speed or participate in team drills, according to Rapoport. Ultimately, the club chose to keep Wentz on the field, meaning he'll be listed on the 53-man roster heading into Week 1.

Eagles' Carson Wentz shines, Nick Foles struggles: Training camp report card, Day 2 practice observations

Carson Wentz

Quarterback Carson Wentz showed on Friday why he will be the starting quarterback when he is fully cleared. Wentz was surgical in team drills, displaying a strong arm not only deep down the field, but also over the middle. Wentz squeezed the ball into some very tight windows, and displayed great touch on the ball down the sideline.

Wentz would have finished the practice with 10 straight completions if not for a sideline judge calling receiver Greg Ward out out of bounds on a sideline catch.

Here is a play-by-play of Wentz's day: <play-by-play in link>

Wentz did not take part in 11-on-11 drills on Friday despite doing so on Thursday. Wentz taking snaps with the first-team offense in 7-on-7 drills, however, is yet another step towards him returning in time for Week 1.

OVERALL: 9/12, 0 TD, 0 INT

GRADE: A

Nick Foles

Nobody will ever be able to take away Foles' Super Bowl MVP trophy. That piece of hardware does not change the fact he has not been sharp the first two days of practice.

Foles has struggled to throw the deep ball so far in camp. His passes deep have been off target and wobbly. He was nearly picked off on Friday when he under threw receiver Mack Hollins down the field.

Foles also made some poor reads on Friday. Some of them resulted in near-interceptions and one resulted in a pick-six by safety Malcolm Jenkins.

Here is a play-by-play of Foles' day: <play-by-play in link>

The Eagles can feel confident that Foles knows how to turn it up when the bright lights come on. New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady can attest to that. Foles' performance in training camp has been far from impressive, however.

OVERALL: 14/17, 1 INT, 1 TD

GRADE: C-

I'm in the camp that foles is somewhere in between the star lots like to claim, and the dud others like to claim.  I don't think we can expect what he did in the playoffs again, but he will be more solid during games than he is in camp.

Yeah I agree he's not the Super Bowl Nick Foles, but he's better than a lot of people give him credit for.  I think Dougie Big Balls deserves a lot of credit for changing the offense during that bye week to suite Foles.  Its also just TC practice number 2 so better days are ahead for SBMVP.  I'm just posting the observations so people can see where they're at early in camp.

Also doesn't hurt to tamp down some the knuckleheads who want to stir up a controversy where clearly none exists.

It should be clear by now that Carson Wentz is very likely the Eagles’ Week 1 starting quarterback

Nick Fierro@NickFierro

Carson Wentz being a full go at #Eagles padded practice is a strong sign he'll be ready for season opener. http://www.mcall.com/sports/football/eagles/mc-spt-eagles-carson-wentz-20180728-story.html …

Barring some kind of setback, Carson Wentz is going to start Week 1 of the regular season.

That's not a report. I don't have some kind of source inside the Philadelphia Eagles' organization telling me that. I'm merely a reporter, with eyes, who is watching Wentz in practice every day. In my view, it's not even a debate.

Book it: Eagles' Carson Wentz shows he'll be ready for Week 1

PHILADELPHIA — Sure, we will have to wait out the entirety of training camp and the preseason for the Eagles to officially announce that Carson Wentz will be ready to start the opener on Sept. 6.

But that pretty much became a done deal on Day 3 of training camp Saturday.

That was when Wentz, rehabbing from two torn knee ligaments suffered last December, looked every bit like the MVP-type quarterback he was last season.

There is little doubt anymore. Not after Wentz participated in team 11-on-11 drills. It was a huge step because this was the first day the players wore pads and were able to hit each other (not the quarterback, of course).

Wentz also took many of those 11-on-11 snaps with the first team, another big step. He and Nick Foles, the MVP of the Super Bowl, pretty much split the first-team reps.

Wentz showed he hasn't lost a step. He sprinted out twice to his right to avoid pressure as the offensive and defensive linemen were going at full speed trying to make a play. It was legitimate, unlike on Thursday in a short, scripted practice with no pads and no hitting.

The guy clearly worked his tail off in the offseason - good for him.

The signs look good, but it will be interesting to see how much he scrambles. That is key in his fantasy value, as his TDs seem destined to come down from the torrid pace of last year.

Instead of rolling at 11, Eagles’ Wentz throttles down to 7

For the first time in his rehab from a torn ACL and LCL, Wentz sounded like his objective to regain the starting job by Week 1 was in jeopardy. It would be a grim reality for the young man who watched Foles win the Lombardi Trophy.

“I’m sticking to my goal,” Wentz said after practice. “Again, I can’t say with 100 percent certainty what it’s going to be but I’m sticking to my goal. The hope is Week 1 but it’s a fluid process and we’ll see as we get going.”

Lots of praise for Wentz today.

Today was a good day for the “I think Wentz will play Week 1” crowd #Eagles

Peter King seems to think they hold Wentz out two games and bring him back against Indy.  I'd be OK with that.  Could pick up Foles for a spell then insert him right back in your lineup week 3.
