QB Justin Herbert, LAC (1 Viewer)

Herbert had a great season, a real bummer to see it end the way it did. Detractors will hold it over him until he gets over the hump. I think he will make people forget about his 0-2 playoff record soon enough.
One step closer to achieving this. Really hope they can put things together this year and get the playoff monkey off his back, Herbert looked locked in last night and it is the type of win that can propel him and the Chargers forward this season.

I'll believe it when I see this execution and focus in frigid January. Great start though!

A statement game for Herbert on a worldwide stage after that disastrous playoff exit.

While I don’t expect him to chuck the ball with regularity like last night, the possibility of them being less run heavy than expected could make Herbert a big FF value pick when all is said and done.

Justin Herbert excelled on play action, intermediate passing and targeting in-breaking routes in the @Chargers’ Week 1 win over the Chiefs in Brazil.

• Play Action: 9/11, 169 yards
• Intermediate: 8/10, 150 yards, 2 TD
• In-Breakers: 11/13, 187 yards, 2 TD

On 3rd & 14 with just over two minutes left in regulation, Justin Herbert reached a top speed of 19.82 mph on his 19-yard game-clinching scramble run, the third-fastest speed of his career.

I love this kid. Looked fantastic last night. Unfortunately I sold my only dynasty share of him in the off-season (for a 2nd) in order to make way for Nix/Maye in a 1QB league where I wasn’t keeping all 3 and Herbert had the best resale value of the 3 at the time.
Sellers remorse? Not really except I really like rooting for this kid and watching him play.

I’ll say it, he looked like Josh Allen last night
He’s got much better accuracy than Josh has ever had. The one thing that separates Josh is his running (especially at the goal line) but more designed runs for Justin will narrow that gap.
That run/slide/POSE to seal the game was a very nice play. And the run near the goalline when he got smashed on his way out of bounds and bounced back up got his team hyped up. Hell, got me hyped up. Excited to see what this team can do this year (says the old Raiders Fan who never would’ve written that a couple of decades ago but “diehard allegiances” and “hatred of divisional teams” has faded greatly and has been replaced with “appreciation of good players”)

Just looked like a guy who has a different moxie and aggressiveness about him. Even the slide at the end had a some flair to it you don't normally see from him.

As you can see from the comments here and other places he's an easy guy to pull for and extremely fun to watch.

Got to give to much credit to Harbaugh as well, does a great job of building up players confidence.

He’s just a good dude - very humble guy when you listen to interviews with him.

He was running through dudes on his long RZ run that called back for a hold.

It's crazy to say but you're right. He's damn near the perfect QB. Smart, built like an NFL small forward, very accurate, can make every throw on the field, his arm strength is top 5 in the league and he's nimble on his feet Only thing he lacks is top end speed.

Check out the pre-game hand shake/dap up between Mahommes and Herbert. We know Mahommes is slight (if 6’2” can be called that) and Herbert is big (yes, 6’6” can be called that ;) ) but, man, Herbert is a freakin specimen of a giant, athletic QB.

That slide was sweet because it took the mark off of Hampton failing to slide at the end of the first half. Vet showing the rookie how it's done and wins the game with it.

Loved what I saw. Didn't want to have to take Herbert in my FF draft because of question marks on the O-Line, but when he fell and was the last guy in his tier, I had to take him as a backup. Now he might be in consideration for a rotation.

The Chargers still get this reputation as a Boomer Ball team because of the history of the coaching staff but they haven’t called this offense as a run heavy unit in neutral situations since before their early bye week last year. Taking a Round 1 RB threw people off the scent again.

They know what they have in Herbert and it’s not a shock they’re leaning into the pass tonight.

It was a damn fine performance by Herbert, almost a clinic on how to use all 3 starting WRs last night
I came away with a new respect level for Herbert and some appreciation for Harbaugh allowing him to be more aggressive than what we saw last season
I came away last night almost with a 180 on my off season assessment of the Bolts
I'm not going to shout out Super Bowl but the Herbert I saw last night elevated him into the upper echelon of QBs in the NFL
That kid can throw lasers when he wants, he was cutting up the Chiefs last night like it was no big deal
He had pretty good protection throughout the game, that always helps

Might have the best arm in all of football. No shtick.

Anyone drafting today? Where do you see him falling?

Ive seen as high as 5th but settling in the 8th, like QB8 off the board

I bought at that price in the 8th, just a hunch, he might have slid but Didn't want to to miss it if its finally happening for him, he's the most talented QB in the league IMO

All that said, the offense did prove to be more pass happy than expected, so maybe Harbaugh and Roman aren’t as set in their ways as we thought - and want Herbert to be the true emgine.
I think they were more efficient than they were pass happy.

They took more deep shots off of PA as well - and that made for some quality FF starts.

I see no reason why Herbert can’t be better in 2025 with another year in the system and (hopefully) more, and better developed weapons.

For much of the year he was either playing hurt, missing his TE, or down a receiver (or in QJs case, burdened by drops).

While he may lack the ceiling of some of the elite FF QBs, his floor is relatively consistent & safe. From week 6 on (after he healed up & the BYE) in the league I have him, he went:
18.8
19.6
31.6
26.9
25.2
32.3
20.6
12.4
18.6
18.75
29.6
33.8
Week 18 DNP

5-10% improvement in 2025 would make him a top 8-10 FF QB.

I don’t see that as an unrealistic projection.
Just went back to see what I was suggesting last year for this year. Only a 1-game sample size but 39.5 points sure would seem to put him on his way to a top 10 season.

As a DC homer I'm in love with Jayden Daniels.

That said, I think Herbert's ceiling is as high as any QB in the league.

I was targeting him as a backup QB this year and he was super cheap. Harbaugh wants to run the ball but he's not dumb. Herbert gives them the best chance to win and I can easily see him finishing in the QB6-9 range.

Good friend of mine and fellow Dolphin fan was quick to text me a screenshot of a post he made from the 2020 Rose Bowl praising Herbert and saying how dumb the Miami Dolphins would be to pass on him at no 5...he likes to wear Herbert Jerseys into Hard Rock

I've been a supporter since the first time I saw him in the pros, so I am definitely not as cool as your friend nor can I beat up Miami for taking Tua, but the narrative that this guy is somehow a bad or mediocre quarterback has struck as one of the weirdest, falsest narratives in this sport. I kind of make the gasface and think about dismissing all and any other musings about football that people who hold this opinion later divulge.

It's usually that he can't win big games—and he had a real stinker against Houston last year—but otherwise you can't control when your coach is just . . . well, when your coach is making interesting decisions that are making people in the know throw up their hands (I actually will defend Staley and think he got weirdly and massively unlucky rather than being stupid, but I know that is a very unpopular and contentious opinion so I won't focus on it) in utter despair and confusion, you'd think people wouldn't blame the quarterback, but our culture has gotten really weird as I age. We scapegoat some of the most innocent of actors and laud rot and disease at times. We misplace and misdirect so many emotions.

Anyway, enough of that. I hope this is his year. He's a freaking bright guy who is an excellent athlete. LFG and wheels up for him!
