QB Martin considered a 'good fit'

Source: New Orleans Times-Picayune

Orginal Article: http://www.nola.com/sports/t-p/index.ssf?/...87715100370.xml

Summary: Quarterback Jamie Martin chose New Orleans as his destination in free agency this year in part due to the welcoming he got from head coach Sean Payton. Said Payton about Martin: "This is a good fit ... I think he's grasping what we're doing pretty quickly. He's got a good idea of how to locate the football, and good anticipation. So those are good things."

Be careful labelling this as fluff, the #2 in New Orleans is a shoulder injury to Brees away from taking over a very talented offense. Martin signed a 2-year contract to compete with Todd Bouman, Adrian McPherson and Bruce Eugene to be Brees' primary backup.

I think Martin is the most logical QB2 of the bunch. One, he was brought in by the new coaching staff (i.e, he's THEIR guy). Two, Todd Bouman is no spring chicken either (he's 34), yet has far less game experience than Martin. And three, while McPherson has the "diamond in the rough" aspect given his unceremonious departure from FSU followed by a very solid Arena campaign, the Saints have never given any indication that he's anything more than clipboard fodder.

yeah, i think martin is the obvious choice at #2. his #'s last year weren't bad in the limited duty. they are misleading, of course, in that offense but they were a lot better than bouman's. bouman played himself out of a starting job with his poor play. mcpherson is an enigma to me. i wish they would do something with him, one way or another. he has intriguing physical/athletic skills but can't seem to move beyond the "project" label. i know he's still young but i have to think a year at NFLE would have been a benefit.
