Since there's an obamacare thread a mile long I figure there must be some experts on this.
I have not had health insurance in the US since July of 2013 when my company cut it due to the impending changes. I then went without insurance until I left the country in January of 2014. I am returning in December 2015 for good and I am trying to see what is available.
I would have liked to get a catastrophic medical plan as my family and I rarely go to hospitals but it appears I am unable to unless I meet one of the hardship exemptions. Does having my insurance cancelled in 2013 qualify me for that? And does my state not expanding medicaid qualify me? I was a long term volunteer and was paid with my own raised funds which totaled $25,000 in 2015 but that will obviously change in 2016 and I could no longer use that exemption.
Also, I have a family of 5 and if I can't get the catastrophic plan it looks like I would pay close to $10,000 for 2016. Is this the norm for people because it seems outrageously high considering the last year I was in the states i spent $160 the whole year on health care costs for a family of 4, minus the premiums for the first 6 months I had insurance.
