Question for Apple gurus (1 Viewer)

I'm trying to restore my son's iPhone 5s because of a lost PIN, but I'm quite dysfunctional when it comes to anything Apple. I followed the steps described here (https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201263) but the phone doesn't force open iTunes to restore. If I open manually, i still don't get the popup option to restore. Can someone show me the err of my ways?

Restart PC and reboot phone. Install latest version of iTunes. If it still won't recognize it try a new cord and/or a new USB slot.  Although if you are restoring from a backup that had a PIN (you mean the passcode, I assume?), you'll have to have that passcode (the old one, when the backup was made).  Without the passcode, it is essentially a brick, best I have ever been able to tell, and you will only be able to set it up as a new device again.

It was seldom used, so wiping it is really where I'm at with the thing. He didn't save/remember his passcode, so as far as I know,  that's my only option. But as far as I can find, it needs to be connected to iTunes or the iCloud to erase it.

Whole thing seems like a catch 22 to me.

The phone doesn’t open iTunes. You need to have iTunes open on a computer, connect the phone to the computer, then do the hard reset on the phone. When it starts up, it should go into recovery mode (just have an iTunes logo on the screen). Then you use iTunes on the pc to do the wipe/restore. If it doesn’t already have it cached, it will have to download the highest version of iOS the iPhone will run, so it could take awhile.

we use Apple configurator for iPads a lot here at work, but I don’t know if that will work for an iPhone. That’s another option (or taking it to the Apple store, maybe?)

So I deleted itunes and tried again. Still didn't work, but I got a little further than before. So I figured I'd try it again. Deleted iTunes and a program called "bon jour" whatever that is (Google said it's part of iTunes). Tried again and viola, it worked. Took forever to delete the programs and reinstall everything, but it's done. I took the extra precaution and engraved his new passcode on his forehead. Backwards of course so when he looks in the mirror he'll see it right.

I am probably going to buy the new MacBook Pro with the 16" screen.  MacRumors.com says it's a "buy now"; it was recently released in November. Amazon has the base price for one at $2099, whereas Apple is selling it for $2399.

I have always bought my Apple products from the store in case of returns and whatnot, but $300 is enough for me to go through Amazon.  Is there any reason I should not buy it from Amazon???  Thanks.
