Question for FBG board socialists and communists (1 Viewer)

Describe something you owned or ran in a socialist or communist fashion that turned out to be a success. No goverment examples.

I'll give my example. My buddy and I co-owned our dynasty fantasy football team and had equal power in making decisions. We had to both agree before any decision was made. It was basically a socialist structure, complete co-ownership of the means of production, production meaning fantasy winnings. It was a complete disaster. Too slow to make decisions, couldn't agree, one guy a risk taker and the other guy risk averse, etc. Really had a hard time winning. But once we decided ONE guy would take responsibiliy and make ALL the decisions, and one would assume the role of a shareholder, our fortune totally reversed, making the championship game 3 of last 4 years.

Give an example where a commie or socialist structure worked better than a capitalist risk taking structure.

Anybody remember the board game Third Reich by Avalon Hill? I won playing Russia once. Took me 3 days but I conquered Germany, then Western Europe, and finally England.

Does that count?

The example you gave shows why unanimity voting is a bad way of making most decisions. It doesn't seem to have anything to do with communism or socialism.

I'm thinking fantasy football can be used to teach kids the difference between capitalism, socialism, and communism. The capitalist team is one guy taking all the risk and getting all the reward, the socialist team has like 5 Co owners all have to democratically agree on decisions, and the split the winnings, and the commie team has like 20 owners, 15 of which do not contribute anything but can collect winnings. Who would win?

In my example, fear of losing and disappointing my lone shareholder drove me to outperform.

So based on your example, you're saying that democracy sucks and dictatorships work much better?

My college roommate and I split the cost of toilet paper. Cost shared equally. Use of toliet paper was allowed solely on the basis of need. Worked out fine.

spreagle...don't let haters and rude people get to you. FBG has gotten a little snarky lately.

There is always a home for you here.

A dictatorship would be someone swooping in and killing off the failed commie or socialist teams and taking over. My team is heavily armed so a dictatorship taking over is unlikely.I do think a dictatorship would gain some ground on the capitalist fantasy teams and perhqps even finish 2nd, but would eventually fail due too heavy a reliance on force to accomplish their goals.

Our society is by definition socialist. Citizens are voluntarily giving up money and decision making to elected leaders who are using said funds for the benefit of society as a whole. This includes our military even. Enough with the socialist is a bad word meme. Because its really not. There are just some things that we do better together than in a purely capitalistic setting.

You don't understand any of the words you're using.

I ran Albania for a few decades during the cold war. There were some ups and downs (in hindsight, all those bunkers I built turned out to be a waste of money) but economic development was on par with western europe, and I was able to bring a country of mostly illiterate farmers into the modern industrial world, so I'd say it was an overall success.

Currently I am part of a group that pools resources to provide universal health care, shelter, food, education, leisure activities, clothing. It strikes me as quite socialist. Seems to be successful but there is a tendency toward authoritarianism in this set up with two members of the collective exercising quite a bit of control over the others. There has been a move to permit more free market activities among the less powerful members of the collective, much like China slowly permitting certain reforms. Through a series of 5 year plans, I intend to discharge these lower performing members, possibly to form their own socialistic enterprises that will hopefully not be housed in my basement.
