I mean, it's pretty simple IMO. Ask yourself, who are you defending here. The College that has rules about people being respectful and decent or the guy that mocked a person that was murdered?  It's not a difficult case.

I agree- it's an imperfect analogy. The school does have some leeway in these type of situations though to enforce codes of  conduct- even off campus. 

Certainly so. However, offensive but legal speech is a very touchy matter for public entities, if the damaged parties choose to pursue the matter legally.

I'm not outraged I just think the university getting involved is stupid.  If this happened on university property and at a university event I'd understand.

The University hasn't done anything.  They very well could be paying lip service to avoid bad PR.  If they actually do something then you can say they're being stupid.

Do you think it's smarter for the University to say I know you're the President of the black student Union but we will completely ignore and dismiss your complaint.  If so you either have never lived in the south or are incredibly naive.

Monica was a public figure and survived- so not quite as bad. It's fine not to care as long as you would be ok if your child was murdered and people were making a joke of it for Halloween.
