Raiders ink super fast CB Stanford Routt 3y $31.5M (1 Viewer)

From earlier this morning:

'NBC Sports]Today - 11:40 AM ET NFL Network's Jason La Canfora reports that the Raiders have reached an extension with free agent CB Stanford Routt. A longtime Al Davis favorite because of his 4.3 wheels said:
Routt was overpaid at just over $3M last season, so the Raiders wouldn't be smart to exceed that number on an annual basis.[/B] They almost certainly will, though. Routt has two interceptions in his last 47 games (20 starts).

This coming from the team that ranked dead last in revenue last year.

I think this is conclusive evidence that Al Davis has completely lost his mind.

Never heard of him. OK, so I probably have heard his name before. But, honestly, I'm not familiar with this guy at all. If you asked me who Stanford Routt was before I opened this thread, I would have had no idea. I'm guessing when I'm asked in a couple years, I'll have to think for a few seconds before I remember, "Oh, he's that dude that got that ridiculous contract from Al Davis."

Davis might be banking on a no cap season. You aint seen nothing yet if that happens. We knew Routt would get a new deal, just didnt know it would be this much. Still I think Raiders likely to bring back either Aso or Huff (who could switch to corner) and might just do both if it becomes possible.

I saw in my inbox "Raiders extend stud CB" and I got excited that we were keeping Aso.... then I see it was Stanford and was thinking 'stud'? We don't want to over pay a real stud but are willing to overpay guys like Stanford? What?

It makes zero sense as there never would have been a bidding war for Routt. As far as Asomugha coming back, that ship has sailed. Routt is getting $20M guaranteed and Seymour just received $30M over two years but is guaranteed $22.5 million for 2011.

Oakland also gave linebacker Kamerion Wimbley more than $10M w/ the tag, and still need to work out deals w/ Huff, Miller, Gallery and Bush.

Al Davis: Hey guys, we're ditching Asomugha. He has a big contract. Also, we have no 1st round pick, so we have a lot of money to burn. So the question is: WHO IS THE FASTEST GUY ON THIS TEAM???

Kinda makes you wonder about the 40 times of the coaching staff.

that's alarming, almost like he's selling the team to someone he hates? what is that 30% of the cap there? 35?

This kinda reminds me of when the Colts traded away Marshall Faulk rather than pay him what he was worth and then gave an even bigger contract to Edgerrin James, only because its the Raiders, Al is doing it based on 40 times instead of actual talent.

Could not agree more. Wait for the dust to settle on the four (Huff, Miller, Gallery and Bush). There was chatter about tagging Z Miller, but my thought is that they are working on an extension. Any guess about what Al would be handing out to his players is nonsense, especially after this deal and making a P and K the highest paid players at their position in the league.

I only recognize this guys name through playing Madden. Can someone elaborate - how was his level of play last year? As a Lion's fan I am so sympathetic to Raider fans, this appears to be borderline insanity on Al Davis' part. The real sad part is the Raiders were fairly competitive last season and seemingly had optimism heading towards the future. This is definitely a reminder that poor ownership is the quickest way to mediocrity.

I think he definitely has the physical tools to be a cover corner in the NFL. I did think his maturity level was an issue his first couple of seasons in the league. He always showed a lot of promise, but then would make a few boneheaded plays and let other players get in his head. I think most agree that NFL cover corners have to be able to shake off a bad play and focus completely on the next play when they line back up in coverage. That is something I think Routt has had problems with; I am hoping Rod Woodson can help Routt improve in that regard. I do think Oakland is overpaying for Routt, but unfortunately when 3 of your 4 starters in the secondary are looking at free agency you are not in the best position to bargain. I do not think this is anywhere near as bad as the contracts a player like DeAngelo Hall receives.Video of Routt

Regarding the bolded above, can you explain how these contradiction here?

Since there is nothing bolded (and you didn't construct a legible sentence) I can only speculate you asking about my optimism/mediocrity connection. They played better than anticipated last year but were still mediocre. The signs of optimism were them playing better than expected. These types of signings and the long history of poor personnel decisions will help continue the mediocre franchise pattern.

After the Tommy Kelly deal I swore Al Davis would never surprise me again. He got me again. Just wow. I wish a company would triple my salary for being ok at my job. If only I worked for the Raiders or the government.

Routt has had his moments, but he's nowhere near the class of Asomugha. You would see Aso lock up his side while the game highlight reels would show routinely Routt/Johnson/Branch lit up on the other side. Routt is blazing fast, but has no instincts. I dont see anything in his body of work that made him worth the 1st and 3rd tender he got last year. $3 million was grossly overpaying him last year. This contract is an affrontery to sanity. Al Davis is trying to execute some kind of Brewsters millions bet before he dies. Don't know what the terms of that bet could possibly be?

Here's what non-Raider fans need to know about this deal:

Routt is an unsung, good CB. He took a while to develop, and was never a favorite, because he was a speed demon taken too early in the draft. But he got better every year, and had a great year last year, while getting the first look every play, being across from Aso. He is a really good player.

And he just got way too much money. Getting too much money doesn't make him a bad player, it just means a good player got too much money.

Unfortunately, Al in his later years has become such a 'players' owner, that he pays prices for decent/good players that are 15-50% more than he needs to. it's frustrating. I like Kam Wimbley, but franchised? Come on. Paid Henderson more than he needed to, and I am betting Routt would have settled for 6 mill a year.

:o

Finally, an explanation of the Tom Cable firing that makes sense. As for Routt, yes the contract is for way too much money, but he's not a scrub by any means. He's certainly not a top-10 CB and certainly not in Asomugha's league, but I'd say Routt is top-25 or so, and still very young with a lot of upside. He'd be the #1 CB on a few teams, one of which is apparently Oakland.
