Raiders owner Al Davis takes a shot at Detroit Lions' Calvin Johns (1 Viewer)

I know its fun to kick around al davis, and he's earned most of it. But when he dies (and it looks like it won't be long) I hope everyone will take a moment to thank him for his work for this game.

If you're gonna write the 80 thousandth Al bashing article at least have some sort of basis, not just a throwaway comment from a week old interview.

Are you kidding me?? Most Raider fans have come to terms that Al Davis is hurting his franchise and should move on. I totally agree that Al Davis has been very good for the NFL and his past proves that, but his ego is killing the team by not putting otheres in charge.

 Regardless of what we think of Al Davis, this was hardly a ripping of Calvin Johnson. He's merely saying that Johnson hasn't translated to wins for Detroit. There are very few positions that instantly transform a franchise. A QB is historically the posiiton that catapults a team. As awesome as Calvin Johnson is, he could never make the difference a franchise QB. Al Davis had the right idea, and went after what he thought was a franchise QB in Russell. He was wrong. But its easy to defend his train of thought that Calvin Johnson wouldn't have made a difference. He'd have been a much better player had he taken CJ. But that's beside the point. Al Davis is spot on in retrospect, and isn't ripping Calvin in the least. Very misleading thread title and poor hackjob writing.

Regardless of your tunnel vision and defending of Al this guy has no business EVER speaking out loud. What a senile goat...didn't he just draft DHB 7th overall in 2009...TWO YEARS after Calvin went #2.So denounce Calvin J by saying "Calvin hadn't done anything for them" and then draft DHB 7th overall while passing on Crabtree, MAclin + Freeman to name a few  :D Stafford + Calvin >>>>>>>>>>>>> Russell + DHB

I don't think you are getting it. was what he said wrong? Yes and no, keeping on how obtuse you want to be. I personally think Calvin Johnsonis a future hofer, so clearly taking Russell was a mistake imo. vut to say Al Davis has no business talking about the NFL, well you couldn't be more wrong. the dude has earned the right to say all the crazy stuff he wants. he's a living legend of the NFL.

So a teams record doesn't allow someone to question the plausibility of Al Davis statement? The poster makes a good point but I would go one step further and say Freeman + Calvin is greater than any three combo and those two have the skill sets that Al Davis covets.

Meet me back here in September...let's find a 3rd party to hold $$$ and I'll bet the Lions have a better record in 2011 than Oakland :bye:

Don't get too full of yourself. The Raiders play in the joke known as the AFC West while the Lions had to play the Bears and Packers twice this year.

Intrestingly enough according to this source the two teams are about an even bet, both getting 50-1 odds.
Detroit Lions 50-1

Matt Stafford has the potential to be a top ten NFL quarterback in the future but he will be growing into his skin in the 2011 NFL season. The Detroit Lions were a good play as underdogs last season but the sportsbooks will be making tighter lines on them in the 2011 NFL season. The Detroit Lions will be in Super Bowl form in one more year.

Oakland Raiders 50-1

The Oakland Raiders went 6-0 in the AFC West but they only won two games outside of their division. They lost two heart breakers in 2010 but they have a their core of coaches remaining with the team despite losing head coach Tom Cable. Oakland Raiders fans would be remiss if they do not take a shot on the Oakland Raiders at 50-1 and non fans might be smart to throw a small wager on this team.

If he'd quit destroying a proud franchise and retire I'd gladly recognize it nowhe's an iconhe was instrumental in forming this leaguewhich is what makes his current state all the more depressing. He's a clown now and it is sad, it is now as much a part of his legacy s the great things he did.

:lmao: One of the greats.
There is no doubt that Al Davis was one of the greats of the game AFL-NFL. Players are not the only people who hang on too long. Owners egos are huge and Al has needed more help and input to run his team the right way, but he refuses. Jerry Jones will follow the same path as Davis.

Cherry picking stats here, but there are 8 divisions, of which only 2 had 3 teams with a .500 record or better. One of those 2 divisions was the AFC West.

It is easy but damn few folks have done as much for the game. Respect.

um the lions split this year with the bears and packers btw...
Unpossible - Bears only divisional loss was in week 17 to the Pack (unless of course you want to include Sunday's NFC Championship game as well). Although to be fair, the Lions clearly are improving and suffered some very close losses including those to the Bears.

For overall records, it's pretty simple to look at their out of division competition. The AFC West drew the NFC West this year and we all know about that division. Plus they had the AFC South which is poor sans Indy. Meanwhile Detroit drew the AFC East this year meaning the Pats and the Jets. And they had the NFC East which meant the Eagles and the Giants.....plus they played Tampa Bay. There's not much of a comparison between the Lions' schedule and Oakland's.My only wonder is what the Lions' record would have been if they had the AFC and NFC West divisions on their schedule in 2010. They may have finished 9-7.

IF you consider week one where Calvin "caught" at TD at the end of the game then it would be a split.

Expecting an informed opinion out of Sam, the Hairless Chinese Crested dog was a bit silly in retrospect.
