Raiders beat writer Jerry McDonald says coach Lane Kiffin has dreams of a three-headed running back monster with close to 600 rushing attempts.

Kiffin knows the strength of his team is in the backfield with Darren McFadden, Justin Fargas, and Michael Bush. If the preseason game calling is any indication, they are going to be as heavily slanted toward the running game as any offense in the league. McFadden remains the best fantasy back, with Fargas and Bush possibly canceling each other out.

Wondering what the Sharks think of this, 600 seems high, but maybe 550? How do the carries shake out?

 
Won't get close IMO, especially given that they'll be playing from behind most games.

Bush is intriguing in larger leagues though, especially if he gets the goalline. He's going undrafted in many leagues right now. I think he ends up with more carries than Fargas when all is said & done.

I disagree with the assumption that they will be playing from behind most games. I think the running game they showed, the ablility of Russell to run bootlegs and slide out of the pocket along with his ability to throw on the run to Miller will move them steadily down the field. Their defense is good enough to come up with stops if they don't get stranded on the field. I think the Raiders have a better than average shot at keeping these games close. I think 550 team rushing attempts is reasonable.
 
You have to get first downs to have that many rushing attempts.

Still they did rush 508 times last year at a 4.1 average, so it isn't totally bizarre. But my guess is that they'll be somewhere around 550.

Ah yes, but do Huggy Bear and Bush each touch the ball 60 times or 130 times?
 
Every coach in the NFL would like to run the ball 600x a season. Well, maybe not Martz.

Doubtful that Russell will be good enough to keep the offense on the field to make this even a possibility.

I am wondering why you think they'll be behind so much? Their defense should be solid. They play the Chiefs twice.
 
They ran the ball a lot last year, and got bad QB play, and could not stop the run, and were implementing a new scheme to the O-line, after historically bad play from the same group in '06.

I think if ANY of the following happen, they could increase their rushing attempts:

1. Defensive improvement against the run.

2. Improvement from the QB.

3. Continued development of the O-line.

They are a real young team, it's very possible that any or all of these things happen.

 
He was certainly dreaming. They were #4 in the league in attempts last year with 508 and the #1 team (Tenn) had 543. I think a repeat of last year or maybe a few more might be in order but 600 is a pipe dream.

4 more rushing attempts a game which is not a monumental amount puts them at 572. Now I don't think they are going to get to 600, but why won't they approach the 550 mark???

I don't think 600 attempts even came out of Kiffin's mouth. I think that Jerry Mac just wrote what he wrote, which isn't news (Raiders want to run the ball!!!!!), and the OP just picked it up.

The guy is big, mobile, has great pocket presence and throws lasers with precision accuracy. Once they put some decent WRs around him, he's going to be a perpetual top QB.

Not many teams run when they are behind by 14 at the half. They may run for a quarter or two but then it is chuck and duck.
