*RAIDERS/TITANS game thread* (8pm EST on FOX) (2 Viewers)

Whether you like or dislike Young, the fact is that this team has done nothing to improve at WR, and that's the primary reason why they will not have a good passing game.
There is no reason to upgrade when there is no viable QB to get them the ball. That would be wasting draft picks. Get a QB, then get some WR's. Vince Young needs to find something else to do becasue he's horrific as a QB. Collins should start. Then they would have a passing game.
So your theory is that the Titans saw how bad Young was, and consciously decided, "Screw it, Young sucks so let's just stick with sucky WR's." Do you really think that's what happened?

Young and the WRs are lulling the league into a false sense of security and slumber until the season starts, then BAM! 5,000 yards passing and 40 TDs.

Or not.

The false sense of security comes from the WR's knowing they're not at risk of getting hit by a football. Those things are sharp!

So much for all that Biren Ealy hype. Have they tossed a pass his way all pre-season yet?
I can promise you this, a person that takes a Titan WR is going to be heavily disappointed.I think Vince's throws are going to be to Alge and CJ, primarily. The WR's will be a diversion. None of them are standing out, and none of them have any fantasy value at all.
2 years ago I wouldn't have believed I'd say this but....Justin Gage750 or so yards with just 8 starts is definitely worth keeping an eye on at leastAs for the diversion, I don't disagree but "everything" was relatively short last year. A handful of deep passes are a real worthwhile diversion for this team.
The one thing I think you can take from this PRESEASON game is that Vince Young is still not looking sharp and confident, and that worries me a bit. But he's been very good in training camp and you can't usually take too much from a preseason game.
Yeah, Vince that we read about in practice is not the Vince on TV the last two weeks. I thought he was all comfy and "at home" in this offense?

I thought Zach Miller and Bo Scaife looked good.

Like the announcers weretalking about with JaMarcus' arm strength, I'd have liked to see some real deep throws tonight

I think Paul Williams is waived soon.
What's his problem? I'm being serious.
Fisher's issue with him last year was drops. He's done well in camp, then week 1 he had a couple drops. In presser at Titans site, Fisher seemed annoyed and while he actually said something like "well he has been doing better this year" his expression seemed like "he'd better not drop another!"Tonight he had anotherIf he's not waived shortly, we may do this dance next week with drops.Long while back, I think Brandon Jones was the topic, Fisher said he was going to hold WRs accountable for drops from now on and it's sort of been something that comes up every now and again from him.ETA and IMO Fisher thinks his WRs do sloppy stupid stuff like cut a yard before the 1st down marker, don't get feet inbounds, drops etc. He's trying to raise the standard and cut that stuff out. He usually refers to it as "missed opportunities".

If you take out CJ's 66 yard run and his two 15 yard runs, he's been pretty average so far in the PRESEASON.
I rarely understand this line of thinking"If you take away his good plays, then he is average at best" :IBTL:

When RB's can lose 66 yards on a single rushing play, then I'll pay attention to their 66-yard runs. :lmao:

I just watched the highlights. LenDale looked like the same old LenDale. Decent feet and burst, but not exactly explosive. I'd look for another modest YPC year. He brings something to the table that Johnson doesn't, so he'll get a good chunk of carries.

Johnson looks explosive and quick. He also looks small. I don't see him breaking many tackles at the NFL level. He'll be a dangerous complement to White, but I think the hype train is probably too enthusiastic at this point.

Hard to judge McFadden based on tonight's carries. He showed a little bit of lateral movement. I didn't think his speed stood out quite as much as I would've expected, but the camera angle on the long draw run made it hard to get a good feel for things.

One thing we're starting to see with McFadden, though - he can definitely run between the tackles. And he doesn't go down quite as easy as many thought he would.

WTF is Johnson criticizing Walker for on that pass? He turned with plenty of time to catch it, but needed a ladder.
 This is why he's no longer on Sirius. Bad analysis.Lendale White is also showing a burst that I didn't see from his last year.
Moose was one of the best analysts Sirius had. I listened to him a number of times and he was fantastic. He's probably not on Sirius because he is doing TV now.
No, he was horrible. He's been on TV for a few years now.

Well, I'm glad I finally got to see Johnson play. It explains why he is so fast. He has 4 feet. How many drops is that for him now, 3?
This is one of the funniest things I've ever read on these boards! Take a bow!
:lmao: Thank you sir. I'm glad you appreciated the humor. Seriously though, as a person who was really watching Johnson for the 1st time I do find this concerning. The value in Johnson was that he was supposed to be used in a Bush-like role and still provide decent points although White would see the lions share of the carries. From what I saw last night its going to be awful hard to use Johnson like Bush when he can't catch even the simplest of passes. I know those who watched him in college say that receiving is one of his strength, so I'll give him a free pass on it for now. I'll be watching it more closely though in the future.

Hawkins looking good on that play.
The only Titans receiver worth having.....in a dynasty league only though.
Remember, this is only PRESEASON.
Poor Shader... LOL... nobody's gonna let him live that comment down. Love it!

page 1. Snap judgments were being made all over the place and I simply reminded the crowd that it's preseason....
I keep trying to draft guys a few games into the regular season but my leagues keep on insisting on me picking my players in the pre-season. Most of these are not snap judjments. People have done their research and are seeing the final stage of the evaluation that they are going to get before they can draft.

What I learned tonight. (added to what I already knew)

Zach Miller is a good TE. He is fast enough (despite his 40 time) to get down field and get open and he has really good hands. Reminded me of Jason Witten a little bit.

Chris Johnson makes really sharp cuts and is really fast.

Lendale White looks faster than I remember.

Bo Scaife looked good. I think with Crumpler and this guy they have 2 very good TEs. Not much of I didn't already know there.

Vince looked like the game plan was for him to throw deep tonight. I think they know what they have in the short game and were concentrating on the long ball to see if any WRs stepped up. Made him look bad. Lets remember what this guy did during the 2 Rose Bowls and his rookie year to win games. This guy is a winner, pure and simple. I expect Young to have average passing numbers this year but his rushing numbers are going to be outstanding.

I am wondering how Defenses are going to be able to control both edges and the middle of the line with these 3 guys. Should be interesting.

McFadden and Bush both look better than Fargas. Fargas runs strong but you can tell he is at his peak and the young guys haven't even reached medium yet.

I saw McFadden run and keep running after the hit. I think that observation about his feet stop moving after contact was either a bunch of hogwash or he has worked on it. He looked good running up the middle . He and ADP had the knock that they run too high in college but they both have the ability to get low when they need too. I saw McFadden do that tonight. McFadden reminds me of Hershel Walker.

Curry looks better than Walker right now.

Walker looks confused. He needs a confidence booster.

I wasn't a big Russel fan. I didn't realize he could move in the pocket like he does. I am not sure if he can put up alot of numbers this year with the what I have seen from his WRs right now but the kid has a very bright future.

Both defenses look good.

Final drive for the win was Ingle Martin at QB and John Vaughn at kicker.

Both went to high school in Nashville. Martin at MBA and Vaughn at kicker.

Wonder if a gamewinning drive in the NFL has ever featured those two positions from local HS players.

:goodposting: I agree with almost everything. I'm still not sold on Young as an NFL QB though. He reminds me too much of Vick....making the occassional WOW play, but missing too many of the routine plays. Doing just enough with his legs to allow people to not realize how many of the routine QB plays he's actually missing. Seriously...he was off target on his short routes too...usually falling backwards away from pressure that wasn't really there. But you're spot on with the RB's and Russell....who seemed a lot further along in his developement then I had assumed.

All the fat talk about LenDale. Yes, I wish he "looked" more like a RB...but I'd much rather he run like a RB...and he does. Is he going to break off a 70 yarder? No. Frankly, he's not going to have many 25 yarders. He can't turn the corner on the stretch play. But you know what? We don't ask for or need him to do that. We have others to do that.

What we need from LenDale is to punish the defense, wear them down, fall forward, and get a very high percentage of the short yard plays (success runs as defined by Football Prospectus).

He does that...and that is what we need.

Jerome Bettis made a career out of running - and looking - like that. If Tennessee ever gets a passing game, LenDale might actually get up over 4 yards per carry, but you can't complain too much about what he gives you now.

Turns out those skinny legs are hard to see, and even harder to grab. :lmao:

Good move by Vince to get his degree. He might need it sooner than he thinks
LOL.Putting on my Titans homer hat, we have always ran very, very vanilla offenses in the preseason and made no adjustments to the other teams. The Raiders were blitzing and the Ryans are known for NOT playing vanilla ever.

So in normal situations, Vince would have had a better gameplan to take advantage of the defenses.....

That being said, it appears he was pretty dreadful looking tonight so hopefully it was just an off-night.
The Raiders run probably the most straight ahead defense in the league. They play 4-3, man-to-man, with little blitzing or stunting. They blitzed last night, DBs even, which is rare for them, but Ryan wasn't trotting out the next great scheme. Defense is always ahead of the offense in the preseason, but that push the Raiders got up the middle? That'll be there in October as well.Same with Haynesworth making the Raider centers look like high-schoolers.

This game drove home some points in my head... Looks like I'm a little late and most of them have been posted in some form earlier...Vince Young simply is not a good NFL QB. Did you see how many throws he made off his back foot? That's QB 101. He won't be around long, and I wouldn't be surprised if he doesn't end the year as the starting QB for whatever reason. Sad, because I like the guy. But Tennessee looks to be a good overall team with a negative at the QB position. Who knows, maybe the WRs are actually decent, but its VY making them look bad instead of the other way around?McFadden will get hurt in the legs at some point this year. I can't remember anyone who runs so upright between the tackles.Michael Bush looks real good. He falls forward after contact and gains those tough yards. Just like...LenDale White, who I will draft with confidence. Chris Johnson is a compliment guy who will not take more shares from Lendale than Chris Brown/Chris Henry did last year. I think Johnson is great, but he plays a different role than Lendale.Oakland D seems to be for real this year. And I thought that THIS was one of the funniest things I've read on the board in a long time.

I just watched the highlights. LenDale . . . brings something to the table . . .
I think you have this backwards.

I'm a huge football fan and I couldn't disagree more with this statement.

that was a great game with a great ending . true what moose said about the guy catching the raider inside the 10 . a great hussle play won the game in very unpredictable way .

not that russell looked "awfull", but i couldnt help think how much better off the raiders would have been if they would have taken quin brady instead of russell . might have made the dif between "respectable" team and "playoff" team ....

Not me. I'll take Russell.
