the rams offense might be good enough that if defense was just middle of the pack, they may have legit playoff aspirations...
there are a few factors...
the old DC was grossly incompetent & hired by martz out of crony-ism... haslett will be playing much more aggressively, blitzing often & from different directions...
they added some nice talent through FA AND the draft... & they all made contributions & paid dividends immediately...
little has had a lot of distractions off field last two years (possible felony drunk driving related prison sentence hung over him in 04 & then his brother was murdered in 05), but is in a contract year & looks rejuvenated... he abused & destroyed mike bell on his second sack, just rag dolled him... he has deceptive, freakish power for his size... little could lead the league in sacks this year... in 01-03 he was right there with strahan, rice & taylor in sacks & FFs...
witherspoon was a sideline to sideline playmaker & was flying all over the field & making impact plays... he stripped tatum bell early for a FF, & at the end he made a diving, acrobatic tip of a plummer pass that led to fakhir brown INT... he instantly filled the gaping hole they have had at MLB since the brilliant & underappreciated london fletcher departed to BUF in FA (remember robert thomas, jamie duncan & chris claiborne... didn't think so)... witherspoon broke a negative trend when due to having a lot of talent on offense & being locked into some bad deals (i think they had $10 mill cap hit on warner AFTER he left) & some bad luck with turley hurting his back, they couldn't be players in FA... also maybe lack of judgement in locking down best younger talent like PHI has led to exodus of talent (like bly, wistrom & fisher leaving)... witherspoon was one of top FA defensive players with peterson, & his signing signaled a significant change of STLs fortunes going forward...
the rams secondary was putrid last year... archuleta is a horrifically unreliable last line of defense & open field tackler, & their other starting safety is actually a WR for the lions (furrey)...

their starting CB were injured much or all of the time (butler on IR & fisher dinged a lot)...
chavous is a very heady guy to have in a pretty young secondary & had an INT... FS atogwe was in the dog house last year, but is appreciated by the staff & should fluorish... unlike last years DBs, he is a solid tackler & will prove an outstanding complement to chavous... fakhir brown was brought from NO by haslett & has been the teams best DB... he added a sack & INT... first rounder tye hill added an INT...
i think the rams are for real (contingent on principals staying healthy)... i don't know about top 10, but would be ecstatic if they could crack top 15, with upside after a few more drafts engineered by ex CAR personnel guru tony softli...
they are bit undersized & might not match up well against a power running attack like PIT...
