Moss open

Wide receiver Randy Moss just held a conference with the media here at Gillette Stadium. Surreal scene, as 35 media members gathered around a speaker box and microphones and tape recorders were piled on the table. NFL Network and ESPN are on the scene.

Moss opened with a statement:

“How’s everybody doing? Thank you all for taking your time out, for patiently waiting. I don’t think you all understand how excited I am to be a part of this organization. I think their record and what they’re about speaks massive volumes. I’m just very, very happy to find some happiness and getting back to what I love to do – that’s play football and going out there and compete.”

At the end of the conference call, Moss was asked about running a 4.29 40-yard dash in front of Bill Belichick.

“The Moss of old is back,” he said. “We’ll leave it at that.”

We’ll have more shortly.

More Moss

How did this come about for you, walk us through the process?

“I actually had been hearing it through from friends, close friends, and also the media, that Oakland was trying to shop me around. I think Green Bay came up, New England came up, and maybe Tampa Bay and Jacksonville. I don’t know who else. Basically, that’s how things came about. Just really, last night, me and Coach Belichick talked for the first time about what’s been going on. He asked me about how excited I am if the opportunity presented itself for me to become a Patriot. Really, I was overwhelmed, because I didn’t expect to hear from Coach Belichick. Once we talked and things worked themselves out, I was very overwhelmed. I’m still in shock at the same time. I can’t believe I’m a Patriot.”

We hear you were willing to renegotiate your deal to come here, but perhaps not for other teams. Why?

“Because, like I said, they have a massive reputation of what they stand for, and that’s winning. Through the course of my career, or the course of my life playing sports, I’ve always tried to be a winner and going out there and competing. Me having the chance to play with an organization, with a coaching staff, with Mr. Kraft as the owner, and the players they have in position, I didn’t think money was a big factor for me. I think over the course of my career, I’ve made a lot of money. I still have money in the bank. BY me coming to an organization such as the New England Patriots, why would money be a factor? I know I have to get paid something. I knew something had to be done with my contract and I didn’t have a problem.”

I imagine that there will be a bunch of Pats fans who used to HATE Moss and rip on everything he did, are now huge Moss fans...... :banned:

Moss, Part II

What did Coach Belichick say he expects from you, on and off the field?

“There is nothing we really seriously talked about. We more talked about the football side of it and what the New England Patriots were about. I think he just wants me to be me and go out there and compete and have fun, like he knows I know how to do.”

What are your thoughts playing with Tom Brady?

“I’ve always been a big fan of Tom Brady’s. The time he took over the starting job for Drew Bledsoe, I knew that was a blessing in disguise for Tom, because I had seen him a little bit in college. By him coming in and taking grasp of being the starting quarterback for the New England Patriots and winning three Super Bowls, I think it was something – as a fan of the game – that I always paid attention to. Now, having the opportunity not just to play with Tom but being on the team that runs a professional ship as far as on and off the field, I know there have been some things that I’ve done in the past in my career but I think that’s all behind me. I’m not really living on the past. I’m really trying to live at the present and the future. So hopefully this thing works out. I know I want it to work out, and hopefully the organization feels the same.”

What do you say to people who question your professionalism and worth ethic?

“I don’t really like to answer questions like that, because the people that question probably never played football in their life or been on the same pedestal I’ve been on. I have a microscope and my microscope is very big. So the people that talk about me as far as my work ethic and my competitive nature and me going out there playing football, the best thing I can say to you – male or female – is you have to line up against me and we’ll see what happens.”

Sounds like a respectable young man. :pics:

Yes. My cousin is a HUGE Pats fan. He actually traded for Moss when he went to Oakland. After havin him the past 2 years he began to say he despised him..... saying he sucks, loudmouth, pitiful player, etc and I traded for Moss, from my cousin, for a garbage pick (hoping he got traded). Low and behold Moss was traded to my cousin's favorite team. Now my cousin in excited about the season and has thoughts of superbowl dancing in his head. Oh yeah, he also mentioned to me that he wished he hadn't traded me Moss a few months ago. :pics:

Wasn't he this nice when he went to Oakland? At Oaklands press conference.
Exactly.Al Davis paid him the money he wanted and he still couldn't play! Maybe if he actually tried and didnt drop easy passes or fought for teh ball we wouldn't have only scored 12 TDs the whole year. Enjoy Pats fans.

In the fourth round, he could be a decoy and still be worth the pick. Nice move by the Pats. Pioli and Belicheck are the best at what they do, hands down. As a dolphin fan, it makes me sick to admit it.

If Brady goes down however, the show is still ovah!

Moss, final part

When did you get word that this was going to be your fate?

"I think last night. I talked to Coach Belichick and he really talked about a couple of things and the possibility of me becoming a Patriot and I just told him that I’m going to keep my fingers crossed and try not to do anything stupid, meaning how happy I am to even talk to Coach Belichick and them entertaining a possible trade of me becoming a New England Patriot. Like I said, I am still excited, but at the same time, I’m still in awe that I’m a part of this organization."

Is it true New England was the only team you would restructure your contract for?

"No. I think that, at the time, [there were talks] about possible trades with the teams and I found out that New England was interested. How many players can you ask in the league that wouldn’t want to come up here and play for the New England Patriots? Like I said, their organization really speaks for itself. You don’t have to really go out and ask Mike Vrabel, Tom Brady, Richard Seymour, you don’t have to ask those guys about the organization because the organization speaks for itself. When I found out that the organization was interested, like I said, I really found out last night how interested they were. I heard it, like I said, through the grapevine, through my friends and on the television through the media that they might be interested. I didn’t really get too excited because I didn’t know if it would work or not."

Did you feel like anything went wrong in Oakland and with Coach [Lane] Kiffin?

"No it wasn’t Coach Kiffin. I wish Coach Kiffin the best. I really haven’t had a chance to really, really talk to Coach Kiffin because there was a little bit of bad blood in Oakland. It was not one particular person. I think it was just not winning and that's what frustrated me the most is not being able to win. As far as I'm concerned with Coach Kiffin I wish him the best. They drafted JaMarcus Russell. They had the two acquisitions this offseason. I don’t have any bad blood with any particular person, even Mr. [Al] Davis, or with the organization. I wish everybody there the best. I really do."

There’s a report that Coach Belichick saw you run 4.2940, is that true?

"Let’s put it this way, the Moss of old is back. We’ll leave it at that.

Moss, Part 5

Have you had any contact with Corey Dillon and in any ways do you see any similarities, as he was someone who came here with an unflattering reputation?

“I think that you guys, the media, has put the reputation and all this stuff out there about me. My coaches that I’ve played for, the players I’ve played with, never seemed to have a problem about my character. Only the media does. So one thing I’m going to promise you guys – I’m going to try my best to give you all a little bit of short interviews, but at the same time I’m going to stay away from it [laughter].”

Can you give us an idea of what the new contract looks like – is it still two years left in length, and how much was converted to incentives, do you have incentives?

“No, I’m not here to really discuss my contract. All I want you to know is how excited I am to be a part of this organization. I think a lot of things have been said, probably over the last week or two about the draft coming – ‘Am I still going to be in Oakland? What team am I going to be on? – that really kind of bothered me because I really didn’t know my fate. Not knowing my fate, that really scares me. What it scares me into doing is working out, getting my body conditioning, so whatever team I get on, that hopefully I can showcase my talent. Luckily, it was the New England Patriots. You all are going to see some things you haven’t seen before, and when it does happen, don’t say I didn’t tell you.”

Moss, Part 4

What type of coaching do you think gets the best out of you?

“I think that Coach is going to give me his best as far as getting me prepared weekly and motivating me. I think he’s the kind of coach that can motivate me and motivate not just me, but the team, to go out there and win. He has a proven track record, so why not be happy, so why not be excited to come play for this organization?

Are you OK to be treated exactly like somebody else?

“I’ve never had a problem with it before in my lifetime. It’s just other people have.”

One of the things with Tom Brady is that he’s known for spreading the ball around. There are games where his top receiver hasn’t seen a pass. Are you comfortable with that?

“Of course I am. I just want to win. I don’t know where you guys are coming from, knowing that I’m going to be so selfish about this trade and me becoming a Patriot. I’ve never been a selfish ballplayer. I’ve been selfish for winning, but as far as me getting the ball and me getting my numbers, I’ve never been selfish. I understand that an organization pays me a certain amount of dollars to make things happen, and when things don’t happen, of course I get mad, of course I get angry. Hopefully some things will work out and I’m looking forward to this opportunity to showcase my real talent.”

Being a Marshall guy, do you know Troy Brown and did he have any impact on you when he was there?

“I’ve always considered myself the second best receiver to come out of Marshall. Being able to play with a Troy Brown, and what he’s done for the organization – and I know Troy is not an individual, and I know they don’t live off individuals – but you see what he’s done in the past and his Super Bowl experience, his punt return against the Pittsburgh Steelers. There are things I love in the game that you have to pay attention to. Troy being from Marshall, me being from Marshall, like I’ve always said, he started the trend of guys going into the league from Marshall and I just wanted to continue that but at the same time just enjoy myself and have fun.”

Moss, Part III

I know you’ve admitted to using marijuana in the past. Are you in the drug program right now?

“I’m really not going to get into the past.”

How about right now?

“I think that a lot of things that you guys are going to try to come up with, and dig into, is very confidential between player and organization, and also the NFL, so I’m not really going to get into that.”

Do you think the Patriots are a favorite to win the Super Bowl?

“Well, when the opportunity came around for me to get traded to New England, and I talked to Coach Belichick, once I started hearing the buzz in the air and on the TV, it was just like me getting a chance to really get on that Super Bowl stage and really show the world who I am and what I’m able to do. What I’ve done in my nine-year career is just a glimpse of what I can do. So me being able to get the right things in place for me to be able to succeed on the field is right here in New England.”

How hard has it been playing in losing situations year after year?

“I think it’s frustrating for any player, any athlete, not just football. Any athlete, if it’s golf, an individual sport, if it was a team sport, it’s always frustrating. When it happens, it’s like you’re going week in and week out and losing and can’t find ways to win, it’s very frustrating. I think that what I’ve done in the past as far as losing and sometimes getting out of control, I think that’s just my competitive nature of wanting to win and helping my team getting into position to win. Like I said, losing sometimes gets contagious. As a player you can’t let that settle in. That’s one of the things that bothered me. I didn’t want it to set in. It didn’t set in. It was just really nerve wracking, knowing it was hard for me to win.”

Do you have a relationship with anyone on this team, and have you talked to any Patriots at this point?

“I talked to Tom Brady today, just to jump some things off, and to let him know how excited I am to play with him. And also, the other players on the team, I know Tom is not no individual. I’ve done my homework on this organization, because they’ve won three Super Bowls, so who hasn’t? They have players in place who are well respected and well known throughout the league. For me, to talk to the players, there are some things right now going on right now, I’m still overwhelmed. At the same time, kind of star-struck that I’m part of this New England Patriots organization. The only person I’ve really talked to is Tom Brady thus far.”

Moss contract details

Posted by John Tomase at 3:41 pm

Randy Moss put his money where his mouth is to come to New England. The wideout accepted a one-year deal worth $3 million, with $2 million in earned incentives. He had been due to make $9.75 million this year and $11.25 million next year, but tore up that deal.
He wasn't going to see that money anyways. They would have cut him first.

He doesn't meet with the press instead he does a conference call, then says it's nice to be with a professional organization.

While I enjoy dissing Vikings fans that is a bit much.

True datRandy Moss-WR- Patriots Apr. 29 - 5:00 pm et

Randy Moss reportedly accepted a one-year deal worth only $3 million, with $2 million in incentives.

A stunner. Moss was scheduled to make nearly $10 million from the Raiders, but he accepted the drastic paycut to play for a winner. Like the rest of the Patriots receiver group, Moss's future with New England is hardly guaranteed past this year.

I don't think he heard or understood the question. He sure didn't answer it.

It's amazing ...

The guy does something reasonable by taking a pay-cut to join a contender and folks still find the negative in it ...

For the record, Moss has had chronic ankles his entire career, but they have never caused him to miss playing time.

In 2004 and 2005 we saw him receive injuries on freak plays. These injuries plagued him for many games after the injuries because he came back too quickly. Essentially negating any possible fantasy value after the injuries.

In 2006, Oakland's offense just plain stunk.

With Belicheck to keep Moss in check and Brady throwing him the ball, I can easily see Moss back in the top 5 WR's in yards and TD's. Additionally it will mean great things for Watson and Stallworth. In fact I believe that this foursome will be one of the best in the NFL in 2007. Brady - Stallworth - Moss - Watson ...

And for the record, I think you might want to recheck your facts about an ankle injury never keeping him out of a game.

Fruity ...

He was and is a warrior and to my knowledge he never missed a game from an ankle injury.

I'd like you to show us one game where Moss did not go because of his ankle ...

Forgive me Fruity I did not remember, but just looked it up. Week #16 and Week #17 of last year were do to ankle injuries ...

As I edited Fruity the last two games of last year he did miss a start due to an ankle.

But I'd say that 138 games started with bad ankles is a pretty good track record as opposed to the two that he missed ...

Fruity ...

This is just my perception, but when someone slated to earn almost $10 Million takes an alternate sum of say $3 Million I'd say that that would qualify as a pay-cut.

Not if there was absolutely zero chance he was ever going to see that 10 million. If they were willing to trade him for a 4th rounder, they obviously just wanted him off the team. He would have been cut if he wasn't traded.

fixed i can't wait until week 10 when it's 20 degrees and snowing and his hamstrings suddenly start to hurt.

I'd wager the Packers would have given him more then $3mil, they just didn't want to give a draft pick. (betting he gets cut)

I think their record and what they’re about speaks massive volumes.
The physics he is using is over my head. The Patriots have had a pretty good offseason. I think it would have been a mistake for most teams to acquire Randy Moss, but the Patriots may be able to restore his enthusiasm for the game.

New team same Moss I loved him coming to Oakland but it's obvious he will always be Moss.. Good move for the Raides. Saves a ton of cap and they have more then enough talent at WR..
