This will be a very good series I think. I know they played last year but Tampa has a ton of momentum and the Rangers look unbeatable lately (15 of their last 17).

Gonna stay out of the prediction business this year in the AL.

Is Shields going on three days rest or does someone else (Moore?) get the game one start?

Huge game because of the momentum factor. Rangers really can't afford to start with a loss at home, especially if Shields isn't pitching.

Trying to predict a 5-game baseball playoff series is a total waste of time. Hopefully it's as entertaining as last year.

I think Wade Davis goes tomorrow, with Matt Moore caddying.

Wow, Matt Moore starting game 1. So it should go:

Moore

Shields

Price

Hellickson

Ballsy move by the Rays

LOVE the move since they haven't seen Moore's stuff - and he had plenty of composure in New York. +166 is pretty tempting.

Seems like a great call....not sure anyone can quiet these bats....but Neimann definitely can't. Might as well shoot for the moon.

Indeed. Big spot for a second career start. As a Ranger fan I'm hoping the kid can't handle it, but he's probably their best option.I wish I felt more confident about this series. (which you can read as I wish the Red Sox got the wildcard)

Moore looked great against the Yankees, but he lacked command against the O's in his earlier outings. It depends which guy they get. He's going to be in trouble if he walks these guys or misses his spots.

I like the move though. Moore has electric stuff and can shut down any lineup if he's on. He probably gives the Rays the best chance to win game one against Wilson.

I think it's brilliant. Maddon has big nuggets. None of the Rangers have seen the kid, and he's nasty.

Summary of Moore's start vs the Yankees. Guy wasn't exactly facing their A team.

Faced:

Jeter - SO, SO

Nunez - SO, 1B, SO (.265 season)

Teixeira - SO, LO (.248, 110 SO in 156 GP)

Swisher - 1B

Jones - SO, SO (.247, 62 SO in 77GP)

Montero - W, 1B

Posada - SO, SO (.235)

Laird - SO, 1B (.190 in 11GP)

Golson - SO, FO (.182 in 9 GP)

Pena - PO (.100 in 23GP)

Dickerson - SO (.260 in 60 GP)

Who is missing other than Cano? Granderson still sits against lefties a lot I believe. 12 K's against major league hitters is crazy. And I've got to imagine it's difficult to go up against a guy that throws high 90's which you've never seen before.

Did you watch the game? I did and I think he would have dominated any lineup in the league that day. Who knows if he can repeat it, but if he controls his stuff he is possibly the best pitcher on the Rays.

I didn't see Cano, Gardner, or Granderson who I thought were everyday types for NYY. Swisher sat after 1AB.

How much of a threat has Gardner been the last month? Granderson still struggles agaisnt lefties. ARod is just a name. Barring Cano, I don't think anything was really out of order. What he did to pro-hitters like Jeter, Teixeira, and Posada was telling.

FYI Posada hits at a .092 rate vs. lefties.

Then chalk it up to excellent coaching, as usual, for Girardi that George Posada was in the lineup that day.

Granderson murdered left-handed pitching this year.

I like both teams and whoever wins this series I'll pull for them to get to WS. I can see it going either way but if I bet $ on this series I would pick the Rangers.

regarding Matt Moore (22, 6'2", 200)

He went 11-3 between AA Montgomery and AAA Durham with a combined 1.93 ERA and 200 strikeouts in just 149 innings pitched

For those who haven't seen him, fastball usually 92-96 range with very good movement; excellent curveball, and decent changeup(I think much improved this year but only saw him once in the minors and two of the games he pitched in Tampa)

Interesting lineup for Texas today:

Kinsler - 2B

Andrus - SS

Hamilton - CF

Young - 1B

Beltre - 3B

Napoli - C

Cruz - RF

Yorvit - DH

Gentry - LF

No Murphy of Moreland in the starting lineup.

Grant tipped this yesterday. Moreland is in a huge slump and head is not right. Will only come in for late game defensive subs. Not sure why Murphy couldn't DH though. Strange.

Against a lefty or not, I still like Murphy better than Kittenface in LF.

Cooper Stone, the 6 year old son of Shannon Stone, the firefighter who fell and died at the park, is throwing out the first pitch today. His first time back to the park since the tragedy. Hamilton is catching it because he is Shannon's favorite player.

Classy move by the Rangers. Getting dusty in here just thinking about it.

What the hell was that? Did Hamilton just sac bunt??
There is about zero situations where Hamilton should bunt. Beside being Josh Hamilton, he is only one who really has gotten good swings. Methinks that was a Hamilton thing versus a OSB thing.

Actually, I'm not sure Price has ever been this good.
You might be right there.Every time I look at the thread title, I swear it says Rangers/Rays AIDS Thread. :bag:

This sets up really well for the Rays now:

Shields

Price

Hellickson

Shields

All on full rest. This was a big one. Great win.

So you guys want to talk about attendance or what?
A simply brilliant baseball mind, much more intelligent than I, once told me that no one gives a ####.Kudos to Maddon for starting the kid today. Big props to Moore for shrugging off the big stage and pitching a gem of a game. Guy is clearly a stud. Props to Kelly Shoppach for channeling Babe Ruth today. Rangers have to respond today. Plain and simple.
