Ravens QB Troy Smith (1 Viewer)

Troy Smith will be the starting QB next year and Baltimore will realize they wasted a pick on Flacco. We all know Boller isn't good.

Troy Smith has that extra ability that will make him succeed in the NFL. Flacco just has a strong arm.

He is a great buy low candidate and a nice QB to stash on your bench in case of bye week problems.
Not saying Smith won't be the starter in week 1 and not trying to offend you, but it is hard to take your opinion seriously with comments like this.

And here he comes-

Second-year Baltimore Ravens QB Troy Smith has made such huge strides this spring that he has passed up Kyle Boller as the odds-on favorite to be the Ravens opening-day starter. Smith has excited Ravens brass with his rapid development after starting the final two games of 2007, and it's understood that there will be no competition between him and Boller in camp. OC Cam Cameron has Smith moving around and throwing on the run, in part to better utilize his athleticism and minimize the problems the 6-foot Smith has in finding clear throwing lanes. Rookie QB Joe Flacco seems to be Smith's only competition for the Week 1 starting job.

Not only to bump, but it would appear this week's start vs. Minnesota will play a large part in his opportunity.

Having McGahee out doesn't help, but at least Ray Rice has been getting plenty of work with the first-team and should be familiar with his role.

That offensive line worries me too, which may ultimately benefit having Smith in there as opposed to Boller.

Of course, that Vikings defense will present it's own set of problems as well.

Big determining factor this week.

According to Aaron Wilson of the Carroll County Times, he'll start Saturday night and go a long way into the game. Boller is unlikely to see the field at all because Harbaugh says "He's had 42 starts. We know what he can do."

I was hoping the underrated Boller would start so I could use Heap (if he's not injured by then) and D.Mason in my Week 1 starting lineups against Cincinnati.

I've actually seen Boller have some good games as a pro (usually in favorable matchups). From what I saw of Troy Smith last year, he's not very good. And the camp reports I've read on Smith aren't very glowing.

Boller seems to be a popular whipping boy on a lot of FF sites. I know he's not Manning or Brady, but he's not as bad as many people seem to think.

Yeah. He is.

Homer alert..

This is coming from someone who bleeds purple and roots for all our players.

What you see with Boller is what you get. IMO, he is not going to get any better. He isn't underrated, he shouldn't be rated at all.

Pros: Tough, strong arm

Cons: Doesn't see the field well, not accurate.

I don't think Smith is any better, but he has a different skill set that might fit better with the current group of players. His arm is okay, but he needs work on throwing the outs. He has leadership skills (some people refer to this as the "it" factor) and escapablity that Boller doesn't have.

I would love for Kyle to just turn the switch and prove everyone wrong. He has taken a lot of undeserved heat in his time here, and by all accounts has acted like a true professional. The problem is, it's just never going to happen.

That's gotta sting. :ninja:
Well, he didn't mean it quite like that. Just that Boller's skills are a known commodity and that they want to get an extensive look at Troy under near-game conditions before they make their final decision. Boller is not yet dead in the competition to be the starter in Week 1.

But if they know what he can do and it's not good enough to keep Smith off the field then what he can do must not be very good.

Sure, we've had 42 opportunities to know what he can't do. But he still might be the starter, which bodes for a long season here in Crabtown.

If Troy Smith can prove he can run that offense effectively and complete some passes without turning it over, he'll win this job and I expect he will.

Boller just seemed to look like a fish out of water when he was in there.

Smith may not lead them to the playoffs, but he'll have some success. The thing I expect most from him is making that receiving corp identifiable.

They do have talent at the WR position, and he'll find them.
