RB Carlos Hyde, JAC (1 Viewer)

49ers RB Carlos Hyde (leg) returned to practice on Friday.

Hyde "looked fine" in individual drills, but did not get much work in the team sessions. The injury was never considered serious, and Hyde should be good to go for minicamp. Hyde should open the season as the 49ers' lead back, but Reggie Bush and perhaps rookie Mike Davis will eat into his work.

With Anthony Davis (Niners RT) semi-retiring for the next year or two, how are people viewing Hyde now?

Anyone manage any buy lows?

Pears, 33, was PFF's No. 76 guard among 78 qualifiers last year with the Bills. From left to right, beat writer Matt Barrows projects the 49ers' O-Line to shake out as LT Joe Staley, LG Brandon Thomas, C Daniel Kilgore, RG Pears, and RT Alex Boone. Pears isn't good, 2014 "redshirt" pick Thomas has never played an NFL snap, Kilgore is coming off a broken leg, and Boone would be converting from guard to tackle. Pears is being tried out for RT, which he played in 2013 when he was rated 45 out of 60 RT's.

I'd consider it a sell high if you can unload him before week 1. That O-line has taken a HUGE downgrade.

 
Breakout or bust? Examining the sophomore RBs

Carlos HydeWhen the 49ers drafted Hyde, it signaled the eventual end of Frank Gore's remarkable run in San Francisco. That came true when Gore signed with the Colts this offseason, paving the way for Hyde to rocket up draft boards and become this offseason's darling sleeper/breakout candidate in the fantasy community. But will he deliver on his hype and opportunity? Here's what I found out watching the tape.

2014 IN REVIEW

Hyde served in a mostly rotational role for the 49ers, spelling Gore at times and occasionally getting his own package or series of work. All told, Hyde had a mere 83 carries for 333 yards (4.0 ypc average) with four touchdowns. He wasn't much on the fantasy radar, and an injured ankle and back ruined his shot at a late-season surge while Gore endured a concussion.

ANALYSIS

The traits that stand out the most when you watch Hyde on tape are that he makes quick decisions and executes that decision with the fire of a thousand suns. What I mean by that, is this guy hits the hole like a wrecking ball. Would-be tacklers and even his own linemen are left in his wake once he comes barreling through the line of scrimmage. Now, that being said, sometimes this leaves Hyde open to get tackled once he initiates a walloping of contact. It'd be great to seem him couple this power with a little more tact, slowing down a tad to allow himself to change direction, as he has the quick feet to do so. He has tremendous balance for a man of his size (6-foot, 235 pounds) which allows him to gain extra yardage after contact (and thus, more fantasy points).

2015 AND BEYOND

For Hyde, opportunity is going to be everything. San Francisco has lost more players to retirement and free agency than Spinal Tap has had drummers, but they will need a steady ground game to help Colin Kaepernick operate at peak efficiency. While Reggie Bush will see a lot of work and Mike Davis could eat into some touches, Hyde will have every chance to make this HIS backfield. Whether he does or not remains to be seen. I like his chance to have a Mark Ingram 2014-type season, where he loses touches to other backs but is still productive enough to post solid RB2 numbers on a weekly basis. Hyde has the talent and opportunity to do so. Now all fantasy owners need him to do is make the most of those.

2015 DRAFT VALUE

Surge: I like Hyde a lot this year, but there is some risk. The 49ers offense is not what it once was, and he could lose touches to the bevy of running backs around him. With that in mind, he's an excellent target in Rounds 4 to 6 as a solid RB2 or RB3.

I was trying to say that last line with a deadpan tone (if that is even remotely possible on a message board) so that it could further enhance my reputation as a robotic posting machine.

I did enjoy the fact that the two posts were articles 180 degrees opposite of each other in their take on Hyde, and I enjoyed the catch and your post pointing it out.

Hyde put on NFI to start camp.

Hopefully nothing to freak out about.

In OTA's, Niners rookie coach Jim Tomsula explained Hyde's absence as "nothing serious" at the time, though it was believed to be a calf issue.

"Carlos is, look, we're not in a hurry with him right now," Tomsula said on May 29. "It's nothing serious, but let's be at 100 percent when we get to training camp. He's in all the meetings and he's here and he's working out and he's doing his stuff. It's just more on the cautious side of just making sure we've got everything healed and then we move forward.

"It's not even a hamstring; it's a muscle pull. You talk to our medical people, (at a) different time of the year, Carlos would be pushing through. But why? That's my whole point on everything. Why do that now and take any kind of chances on things? Let's just get it healed and get going."

Hyde had a series of cryptic Tweets this month, including one where he only posted the word "hurt."

Don't know what to think of him this season, like his opportunity with Gore out of the way but that O line most likely isn't going to be what it has been. Ugh

If they are moving to a Zone blocking system, doesn't that help offset the O-Line woes? They don't have to hold the blocks as long as the RB is one cut and gone...

In other words, the 49ers would use a running back committee. Maiocco states Carlos Hyde "is best-suited to be the back on base downs and short-yardage situations," but he is going to lose passing-game work to Reggie Bush and/or Kendall Hunter. Soft-handed FB Bruce Miller will also siphon some receptions. As a likely two-down back on a team with a 6.5-game Vegas Win Total, Hyde is best viewed as a low-end RB2 pick in re-draft leagues. Hyde opened camp on the active/PUP list with "what is believed to be a minor calf strain."

Not sure that helps him. One of the negatives in the articles above was his low number of yards before contact. They mentioned that his vision isn't great, he missed open holes. The one they showed reminded me of TRich. He isn't that bad, but I think vision is huge for a zone blocking RB. They have to see the hole and go. TRich was the example of horrible vision, but I would think Hyde may have difficulty if his vision is on the bad side and his OL is getting worse. The positive in the same article was the high ypc after contact. Again, he isn't TRich but I'm hesitating and thinking about that when I hear of a RB with not so good vision who can break tackles and has a bad OL.

I am not at all surprised this might be a RBBC. I owned Hyde in two leagues and dumped him for a 1.07/1.08 pick several months back after reading that current team management, coaching or ownership (forget which) did not want a three down back, had wanted to make the change to a RBBC previously, but didn't feel right making the move as long as Gore was on the team (sorry, can't remember where I read this, so I don't have the link, but whatever source it was, it rang true to me at the time). Plus I must say that I had felt a bit underwhelmed in the games I did see that Hyde played in.

He ran in the zone read in college and was pretty successful.

First-year 49ers OC Geep Chryst says he does not want "tightly defined roles" in San Francisco's backfield this season.

Chryst also said he has "no idea" how the depth chart will shake out. "That's what we need camp to find out." Carlos Hyde remains the front-runner for early-down work, while Reggie Bush should be the top option in passing situations. Kendall Hunter and rookie Mike Davis are also vying for tailback snaps.

Hyde operated as the 49ers' every-down back with the first-team offense, while Reggie Bush and Kendall Hunter were held out. Hyde had an excellent blitz pickup on San Francisco's opening drive, but managed gains of 3 and 3 yards on the ground. Hyde is the 49ers' early-down back, quite clearly, but remains in danger of losing significant passing-game work to Bush and/or Hunter.

I think this Reggie Bush signing isn't as big a threat to Hyde as some say it is. Hyde reminds me a bit of Jeremy Hill in Cincinatti. He's a big guy, but he's quick for a man of his size. While I am certain that Bush will be decent in PPR, I think Hyde will have a good year worthy of a third round pick.

I am taking the opposite approach. I think Reggie Bush is a big threat to the fantasy production of Hyde. I simply don't think the Niners are going to be that good and be able to dictate games and so I think they maybe passing more to catch-up/more passing situations, etc and that may lead to Bush being on the field more than we think.

 
Can anyone explain to me why they think he'll be so good this year? I've seen him as high as 2 on dynasty charts. Based on what?

I don't think the SF offense is going to set the world on fire, and their defense lost about half it's starters this offseason. They will have to give up the run pretty early in games when down by 14+ points. Even Gore wasn't a top 15 back last year, when they had a defense keeping them in games.

This is my take as well. 49ers are no longer a defensive, ball-control based team - they will need to throw it a lot more than they want this year. Think Hyde can have a 1000 yard season, but will be limited in the passing game.

I like his talent. He's big and agile, and showed soft hands at OSU. Also, he seems to be working very hard this off-season by losing weight and focusing on pass protection. I think he has the physical tools to be a better NFL RB than Gore was the last few years, and his work ethic is encouraging. I also think it helps him if the 49ers run a lot of zone read, because he ran that for 2 years in college and was successful.That said, his supporting cast has obviously deteriorated, and his schedule is rough. I'm not so convinced he won't be involved in the passing game, so I'm not fully buying that he's a terrible play if the 49ers are behind. Being in Detroit area, I doubt Bush offers much, and even if he does I doubt he stays healthy.

Serious question. Any hyde/Bush owners worried about Jarryd Hayne taking touches from these guys?

I know he is raw in terms of NFL experience, but to walk away from his livelihood the way he did to pursue this dream takes major cajones. I can't imagine he would do it if he didn't think he had the drive and work ethic to make it happen. I feel like he is more motivated than hyde or bush given his situation and may have the determination to beat them both out.

Crazy I know. But I believe he could be their best rb by midseason. Am I certifiable or just kinda crazy to even think this?

Let's see him make the final roster first. Until then, it's just a pipe dream. Motivation and drive are fine, but he still has a long way to go to learn his new craft.

IIRC, he also had a nice run of 7-9 yards called back on a penalty.
