RB Ricky Williams has Retired (1 Viewer)

I put this in the Ravens thread but he is a little more on it.

http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2012/02/07/ricky-williams-is-ready-to-retire-but-it-may-not-stick/

The long, strange NFL trip of Ricky Williams may be over.

Mike Florio reports via a league source that Williams has informed Ravens officials of his plan to retire. We say only that it “may be over” because Florio was told there’s a belief Ricky’s decision to retire won’t stick.

Williams is often full of surprises, and veterans that decide to retire shortly after a devastating playoff loss often change their mind by training camp.

The news comes as a surprise to Baltimore. Williams said a few weeks ago he planned to continue playing and the Ravens would have gladly welcomed him back after a solid 2011 campaign. He was under contract to the Ravens for another season.

If this is really it, Williams concluded one of the most fascinating and often under-appreciated careers in recent NFL history. He’s 26th all-time in rushing yards.

When Williams first “retired” in 2004 to search the globe, it was hard to imagine he would carve out six more seasons, mostly as a hard-working role player. He was also suspended for all of 2006, but returned to the Dolphins and wound up topping 1,000 yards rushing in 2009 for the fifth time in his career.

The NFL is a less interesting place without Williams in it. But we have a feeling Ricky may not be done running just yet.

Who will be Rice's new backup?
I honestly think that his backup is not on the roster yet. I think they'll try to add a speed rusher to the defense but there will be a few RB's in the draft that should be available around that slot depending on how it all plays out. I would not be one bit surprised to see Miller, Wilson or Martin end up there. Or they could wait till the 2nd and hope a guy like Polk could be there.

One of my favorite players of all time.

An absolute beast in his prime. So many memorable runs as a Dolphin.

RUN RICKY RUN !!!!

Probably some veteran that is cut or MAYBE a FA. Can't see them burning a high pick on a rookie so if it is a draft pick, I would think it would be a lower round guy (certainly not Polk or Martin or one of those types). NFL teams act like they don't need or want RBs as it is; definitely can't see a Big splash.i could see a guy like Tashard Choice, Marcel Reece, Jason Snelling, Caddy (if he is released, Some early cut from one of the camps. A guy like that.

Both marcel reece and mike tolbert are absolutely perfect complements to rice.

Somehow he's under-appreciated. I always felt like Herchel Walker was too. There's been a few special ones that that curiously don't get enough love.

I loved each of these backs that their GMs/owners/coaches supposedly traded wayyy too much for and would have made those trades too. In hoops, somehow trading almost a whole team for Kareem was a bad trade in opposite fashion to Herschel and Ricky. I love the discussions. Maybe it's the FF stuff and these sports teams almost pretending they play FF with these huge trades? I think it's fascinating.

I am not a Mark Sanchez fan so I would be all too pleased with the discussion this offseason if the Jets offered the Colts every pick for Luck.

We quantify what good and bad players are worth all the time, but a franchise player a (supposed) probable "best of" type player...those are hard to gauge.

In many ways, Ricky broke new ground with his website www.runrickyrun.com. If you remember, he would post daily "blog" entries on his site about his day-to-day activities - his diet, workout regimen, struggles with being a celebrity, etc. This was well before the age of athletes using Twitter to communicate with the outside world. I remember reading his page and being amazed by how candid he was since no other celeb at the time would even think of sharing such "private" information. I wonder if he realizes how ahead of the game he was.

From a football perspective, Im really happy that he ended his career with 10,000 yards after all his ups and downs. Ricky had a very admirable career - Im glad he restored his reputation among peers and fans and is going out the right way. For a long while, he was considered yet another athlete-gone-wrong. Great that hes going out on his own terms now.

Cheers to one of my all time favorites - enjoy your retirement Ricky!

not one mention of Anthony Allen? he beat out Parmele for the 3rd string gig and had positive reports in camp. They kept him on the 53 man roster despite being inactive all year...I'd say he's definitely the favorite for the back-up gig at this time

I'll never forget this run by Ricky. I still have the same season tickets I did then, they removed the track around the field since. So anyway, you knew at the time that Ricky needed about 12 more yards for the record. I saw him bust it, like he did a lot, and once he got by record you thought he was tackled or out of bounds about 5 times before he scored the TD. The video doesn't do the mayhem that ensued. It was awesome to watch that dude run in college. Hook em.
