RB Parker Sheds Sleeves

Ed Bouchette, Pittsburgh Post Gazette - [Full Article]

Steelers RB Willie Parker will not wear the rubber sleeves around his arms this week at New England. It was suggested by NBC analyst John Madden that the sleeves made the ball slide out of Parker's grip, but Parker was following his predecessor's lead. Former Steelers RB Jerome Bettis, who rarely fumbled, wore them during inclement weather. "John Madden has a lot of knowledge about the game," Parker said, "But a Hall of Famer once told me use those rubber [sleeves] when it gets wet, and I've been using them ever since." Nevertheless, Parker promised a young fan he would put them away after an autograph session.

HC Tomlin Addresses RB Parker's Fumbling Woes

Ed Bouchette, Pittsburgh Post Gazette - [Full Article]

RB Willie Parker fumbled four times last week, losing two to the Bengals. NBC Broadcaster John Madden blamed a pair of rubber sleeves Parker was wearing last Sunday. HC Mike Tomlin said regardless of the reason, it needs to stop. "Willie is a professional and I trust that he will do what is required for him to be successful. I will ask him to hold on to the football in the future," Tomlin said.

I remember years ago when Ahman Green was fumbling like crazy, Madden addressed the same thing during a MNF game and Green ditched the sleeves, and it pretty much cured his fumbling woes

anybody who has ever used a rubber sheet will tell you that it becomes like a slip and slide when you start adding liquids

I remember that game well as I was an Ahman owner that year. We deduct 3 points per fumble lost and it was very concerning. I think was a rainy monday night game and Ahman had put the rock on the carpet 2 or 3 times in the first half. I believe when he came out after halftime he switched to knitted fabric sleeves instead of rubber (or maybe went sleeveless, I can't remember) and had no issues.

 MNF vs. Philly. I kinda like him fumbling :(

Seriously though! I'm guessing Bettis wore the sleeves so tacklers would slide off him, not to hang onto the ball. That makes no sense.

Bettis also has a much larger body/arms. Clearly FWP had a problem with holding onto the ball. I don't see how those sleeves would help, and probably hurt.

Perhaps he could also take some medication for those end zone and screen pass allergies he's come down with?

EDIT: too late...
