Reasons I am Voting for TRUMP (1 Viewer)

First of all, great thread, and thanks to Trip for starting it. I really do think it's important for everyone to understand why other people think differently from you, and not just dismiss their views out of hand.

One thing I haven't seen mentioned yet in this thread: I don't personally find this argument convincing, but I do know some of my fellow Jews who are voting for Trump because of his positions on Israel. He has given the country, and in particular the Netanyahu government, just about everything it could have asked for: recognition of Jerusalem as its capital, getting out of the Iran deal, preparing to recognize Israeli annexation of the West Bank, etc. Now as a liberal Zionist, I think a lot of these moves are actually not in Israel's long-term interests, and more broadly I think aligning yourself with Trump never seems to work out well for anyone, but I can at least appreciate the importance of the issue for some people. (It is worth pointing out that there's no evidence American Jews will be shifting their traditional allegiances from Democrats to Republicans.)

Also, I know this isn't a "say something nice about Trump" thread, but I will say that, while I think he could have handled the Jerusalem issue better, in the end I can't say I'm unhappy with the reality. I understand that in diplomacy, sometimes it's necessary to soft-pedal obvious truths, but when you step back it's weird that the world has spent the past 70 years pretending that Israel's capital is a different city from the one the Israelis actually use.

I think we handled it OK.  Could have been better, but hindsight is always 20/20.
Thank you. I agree it’s always easier to judge after the fact. Disagree that we handled it ok. This isn’t all on Trump, way too many people in the US have have been an embarrassment with their actions.

Look at nations that are handling this well and how their government and the population have handled it. We look pretty sad in comparison. We definitely played into the US stereotype here.

It's simple to understand, really.  Do you trust a liar because maybe 5% of what he says is truthful?  No, you don't.
You can’t be serious with this.   Trump tells the truth by accident.  He impersonated a fake reporter (who he later named his kid after) to brag about himself.

I agree the Steele dossier is unreliable though.

and I wasn't talking about Trump. I was talking about the dossier.

I honestly don’t understand you or BladeRunner’s position on this. The Dems’ last two candidates for President - the leader of the party - are Hillary Clinton and Joe Biden. It’s hard to be more moderate, more centrist, than that.
I’m not 100% referring to policy here. Biden is an old white man who is clearly mentally in decline and there’s nothing exciting about him. He’s old guard establishment through and through. Now don’t get me wrong I’ll take him 100 times out of 100 over Trump, but that is an extremely low bar.  There was a huge opportunity missed here to move the party forward and it didn’t happen. That’s massively disappointing to me.

No question about it.

Thanks @dkp993  I totally understand what you're saying and get it.

My thought though on the strategy. Most Democrats or Anti Trump people I know would vote for any candidate the Dems put up there. End of story.

So to me, it became way more about those mystical middle of the road voters. Many who voted for Trump in 2016 but are open to the Democrat this time. In my opinion, a guy like Biden is way more appealing than someone more towards the end of the spectrum like Sanders. In other words, I know middle of the road 2016 Trump voters who might be inclined to vote Biden in 2020. I don't know many of those who'd vote Sanders in 2020.

A vote is a  binary go / no go decision. It's not like other things where you get to measure how much a person likes something. The voter who thinks Biden is the greatest candidate ever and the voter who thinks Biden is the less bad of two bad candidates both count the same.

From a strategy angle, I think that's why the powers that be prefer Biden.

And also I fully acknowledge I know nothing about nothing on this.

I don't like Trump, but a lot of Presidents were not likable people and certainly not upstanding honest either.

We had an amazing 3 years run until covid-19 and I mean economy was great, unemployment low, NK was tamed, no wars, no major attacks on US soil, good things happening on many fronts and that's despite the Democrats crying Russia/Stormy/taxes and even the embarrassing Ukraine impeachment. I mean all that stuff and STILL great things were happening

Why I am I voting Trump? Democrats are anti-gun, pro-abortion, pro-illegal immigration and most recently they're now anti-police and I cannot in good conscious vote for a party like that

I wish there was a true viable middle ground party but there isn't. Last few weeks I have seen many Trump signs, no Biden signs. Nobody is excited about old Joe

All valid points that certainly could be true.  I know nothing as well so my opinion isn’t worth the paper it’s written on (metaphorically speaking of course), but I my thoughts are....  like you it was to appeal to the “middle”.  Where we differ is I think they went after the apathy vote.  Those that don’t spend their days on a FF sites political forum and are even more disconnected then I am.  They are banking on the brand known name vs the unknown like Yang or Buttigieg.  And it’s likely a good strategy, marketing and branding work.  It’s just a shame because I think either would have been infinitely better for the party in the long run.

*for the record I feel the GOP needs the same change and looking forward mindset but at least they backed (largely the voters did) the unconventional candidate in 2016.

This is a great thread and a testament that us forum members on each side of the aisle CAN actually have a decent conversation without the demonization.  Great job, @TripItUp.

The reasons I'm voting for Trump are pretty much summed up by TripItUp and Joe, but also:

  • Supreme Court
  • Cancel Culture

This to me is a form of Communism/Marxism tactics not any different than those who were considered Kulaks in the late 19th and early 20th century.  Same concept, different execution.   Could fall under my last point below, too.

[*]Last, but no least, that the left is moving further and further left and is basically right on the doortstep of Socialism/Marxism .  I see this because of the recent waive of far left ideologues being voted into office BY the liberal voters:  AOC, Talib, Hirono, etc...  By the support of groups like BLM (whose leaders open admit to marxist training) and Antifa.  The calls to Defund the police and the Green New Deal - which basically is a Marxists wet dream disguised as an "environmental" policy.  They are slowly but surely being taken over by ideas we've seen in action in the 20th century alone that have had disastrous - and deadly - results.  They are not only NOT learning from history, but actively trying to erase it.

It's just my opinion and the way I feel.  I feel like I'm trying to SAVE the country by voting for Trump against those who appear to me to want to actively destroy it and replace it with something much worse.  But I'm much less Trump and more Republican/Conservative.  Bu,t IMO, he's far better than the alternative.  I have ZERO choice but to vote for him.
Aren't both the first two items listed here really contained within the third?  And for the third item would it be fair to say that the country, by extension is already being pushed too far to the left (for you)?

In other words you wouldn't care too much if the democrats were too far to the left if it was just talk among ourselves, but you have to care because of the little nudges and bigger pushes this bleeds into the nations political direction which is contrary to your beliefs as to what is best for the country.   (Correct?)

And am I going too far to suggest that during much of the past that even though your candidates seem to be winning majority of seats in government (most the time), nominating the majority of judges, etc., etc. that the nation already drifts leftward way too much for your liking and ultimately we need to elect those that will push back above all else?   Way too far?   Too far, but just a little?

I'm not "religious" at all.

I do believe in some sort of "supreme being" but I won't presume to tell anyone who he or she is and what he or she wants.
I don't know so, I just try to be good.

When it comes to religion...ANY religion....I follow the proven, philosophical belief that religion is like a penis.
It's fine to have one and it's fine to be proud of it, but please don't whip it out in public and start waving it around...
and PLEASE don't try to shove it down mine, or my child's throat.

And that goes for ANY and ALL religions...to me, they are different, presumed routes to the same location.

That being said, my youngest daughter thinks as I do when it comes to God and my older daughter is quite religious and has firm beliefs....but she too, respects the rule I listed.
Hmmm, not sure why @Joe Bryant deleted my response, while simultaneously leaving your initial post.

Avoiding vulgar metaphors, I never understood why people are offended by proselytizing. If one truly accepts the message of Christianity in particular, why wouldn’t you want to share the path to eternal life?

And yes, it’s off-topic, but still a reasonable discussion in the context of understanding those whose believes differ from your own.

But the people that are offended* don't accept that message.  Why should I be pestered because you think you're doing me a favor?

*I'm not sure if "offended" is the right word, at least in modern times I'd say more like "bothered" or "annoyed."

Not sure what you mean or what was deleted. There was a lot of stuff that was deleted and maybe it got caught in the mix.

To be fair, any of the mods could have deleted it. Not the end of the world, but I didn’t think my post was any more offensive than the one I quoted.

Believe me, as an atheist I understand what you’re saying about accepting the message.

But if I put myself in the shoes of a devout Christian, I’d want to spread the word to anyone who’d listen, especially if I cared about them. Even if the Bible didn’t tell me to do so, I can’t imagine wanting to save eternal life just for myself and other believers. Pestering someone is hardly comparable to condemning them to damnation by not trying.

The single thing that every religion has in common is that, paradise for them, is sharing eternity with like-minded people.

NOT bashing it....simply pointing it out.

Not a theologian, but I’m pretty sure this isn’t true for many Eastern religions. Certainly not Buddhism.

I guess all the Abrahamic religions believe their path is the only way, with nonbelievers relegated to eternal suffering. If this is the case, proselytizing should be a priority IMO.

I know this is an attempt to denigrate such beliefs, but that's probably pretty heavenly from the fly's perspective.

And FTR, Buddhists don't believe in reincarnation as you describe.
