Redbox streaming-Beta $8/Month (1 Viewer)

nightmare

Footballguy
I signed up for Netflix streaming(by Verizon) some time ago. Got the invitation today. Netflix lite is how I would describe the selection. VERY good picture and streaming. The big difference is Netflix has a lot of older movies 40's-70's stuff, some classics. Redbox has some older stuff and every direct to DVD release from who knows how long ago. Of course both offer every Van Damme, Segal, Jet Li, J Reno action pic. The Sports section has a total of two movies-One is Lords of Dogtown and a surfer pic. I'll probably re-subscribe in the future just to see what they have.I did get 4 credits for Kiosk rentals after signing up. I have the cheapest internet plan Time Warner offers and it was fine. ETA-Redbox does have some recent "blockbusters" like Thor and C America but Netflix has those and The Avengers. Also NO TELEVISION option(yet)

I signed up for the email too. Hoping to hear something soon.I like the 4 credits thing. For $8 a month? Seems like a bargain.

I got an invite, but didn't sign up. Their selection is pitiful and the kiosk feature isn't a huge seller for me.

I thought the streaming is way below the quality I get using Netflix. I used their app on my iPad and the quality wasn't close to HD where the Netflix is an excellent picture. I have yet to try it on my laptop and home theater PC though.

Haven't heard of this yet, but Netflix pretty much saved my summer. Having the most basic cable package meant that I'd likely get bombarded with political ads all this past summer, and so the Mrs. and I watched a lot of Netflix. The selection isn't stellar (No Down Periscope? That's an underrated classic!), but it works for us.

If Redbox can get the exclusive dvd releases straight to the HD streaming service, I wouldn't mind spending even $25/month for it.

The biggest problem I read about at this point is that the interface is terrible. Apparently not every movie is free. Some you still have to pay to rent. But there's no way to sort for that, so you have to actually click on a movie to tell if it's free or not. That's a pretty big failure.

Streaming is a different website-all options are shown and easy to navigate. Interface is fine. Right now the selection is weak. I use Google chrome.

It's all going to come down to content. I like the angle in that Verizon is backing the service. The real limiting factor for Netflix has been cable/satellite providers paying the content providers to prevent them from gaining access to content that would make them a legitimate contender for media variety vs. what the cable/satellite companies offer to their paid subscribers, over their infrastructure. If VZ can work in, as a cable provider, expanded content deals with even a decent or better/usable interface, Netflix will get smoked and this thing will have a chance, not just be an alternative. Very excited to see how this plays out.

Got my free trial invite. Streaming selection is pretty bad, but it's only a beta test. The 4 credits with the $8 charge are for DVD only but you can upgrate to 4 credits of Blu Ray for just $1 more.I'm intrigued...

I got mine today too. They need to get going on a PS3 app, and work on the content selection. The movies are pretty brutal, and there's no TV series' to speak of. Still a decent deal to get 4 rentals on top of the streaming, but I'm thinking I stop after the trial. If they come back with better content after beta's over, I'll re-evaluate for myself. I think since individual movie streaming rentals are a play for them, that's not a good sign for the movie collection covered by the subscription. Again, we'll see how it plays out.

Amazon Prime has Thor, C. America, etc. Avengers is still $3.99 at this point though.$6.66 a month, works on Xbox, etc., and you get super awesome shipping options from Amazon. Good deal imo.

Tried to pickup Madden on a whim to try it out today and the case pops out and someone had printed the madden cd art and just cut it in the shape of a disc and returned that instead of the game. What is redbox play here really? I called right away and told them what was up and returned the game within like 30 min of renting it (after talking to them) so it would appear to clearly not be me doing it but whats to say I didn't just rent the game and have that piece of paper ready and made the call acting like it was the guy before me who must have done it? Im not brainstorming ways to steal a used game here, just seems like theyd have to rely on people not being douches because I don't see how they could prove guilt for a particular party. Was just an interesting thought I had, guessing most don't do it because they would rather pay the dollar or two a day and be a good person instead.

I would assume they try to charge the credit card of whoever last rented it before someone complained. Or write off as a cost of doing business.

Yeah I looked into it a little and it seems they lean towards the cost of doing business side. Apparently it's a fairly frequent problem with their video games. People make a photo copy of the actual disc they receive and that copy has whatever bar code on it is needed for the redbox to think the game is being returned. That coupled with the fact that it isn't as easy as charging the last user as they could claim it wasn't them (and that the guy who just rented it must have done it and pretended he received the paper in the box) and they just write it off. Seems way too easy to do thought there has to be something they can think of to stop it I would think.
