Reds Fire Narron (1 Viewer)

According to the Cincinnati Post, the Reds have fired manager Jerry Narron.Former Pirates interim manager Pete Mackanin is expected to be named his interim replacement. It really was past time for Narron to go. The players and media seemed to like him, but his bullpen management was a real problem and he wasn't always good about putting his best lineup on the field. The move would seem to come too late to do much good for 2007, but the Reds still needed to move on.

A source told PA SportsTicker that Joe Girardi, the 2006 National League Manager of the Year with the Florida Marlins, twice interviewed for the Reds job this past week but turned the position down because he would have had to retain some of the current coaching staff

Pete Mackanin?

Someone want to explain to me why they chose a scout for an interim job? Since they're keeping the rest of the staff, why not give it to Bucky Dent or Billy Hatcher?

Here is my theory.I think Mackanin is going to be a very short term interim. I think the new hire will be hired before the post All-Star game second half starts.I don't think they gave it to Hatcher or Dent becuase they want to take the time to consider all their options, and I think it is a bad practice to offer the interim position to an active coach within the organization and then pull the job from him later on.I don't think Hatcher is ready, but Dent is an option.I will be curious to see if they make a play for Girardi since there was a lot of talk about him waiting for the Yankee job. I don't think the Reds job is as ugly as the Oriole job, so maybe he would consider the Reds if offered the job.The Enquirer's blog has a few mentions for Bobby Valentine, and I would personally love to see if Sparky has any interest in the job. Castellini is a Big Red Machine kind of guy, and Sparky would certainly help sell tickets. The problem is....and this is pretty obvious....it doesn't matter if they hire Jesus Christ, the Reds won't win much if they don't repair that miserable bullpen.

Sparky Anderson? Is he still alive?

Sparky Anderson? Is he still alive?
I know...I know....it isn't a practical hire. If I were running the club he isn't someone I would actually hire, but he may be what is needed to give the team a jolt through the end of this season.Everyone in the bullpen would get to pitch to one batter every night.

I am a little slow on the morning updates. I hadn't seen this:

Who do you suppose he wanted to get rid of that the front office wanted kept around???

I'm sure he'd want his own pitching coach with this mess and bench coach. I don't know if Castellini/Krivsky has any longstanding connection with **** Pole or Bucky Dent or if Girardi has a past with them, but I'd guess those would be the two prime trouble spots here.

From Today's Press Conf.

Pretty strong words from Brandon Phillips:

The players were not notified of the decision to fire Narron. Second baseman Brandon Phillips was upset today.

“Jerry did the best he could do. We had a lot of veterans. If he had different guys in there, we’d have different results,'' he said. "We didn’t make any trades. We didn’t fire anybody but get him fired. It sucks.''

Phillips said the team did well with Narron last year.

"But we had new guys come to the scene this year. He tried to adjust with the new guys this year, but it’s all about certain players. Ken Griffey and his home run chase, Josh Hamilton and his comeback season, everybody got caught up in that instead of winning.

"We’re happy for Josh, but we want to win. And the next thing you know, Homer Bailey’s up here. We’re a team, and everybody’s worried about three guys.”

This one is EASY.The Phillies Charlie Manuel.:endofthread:
This was true before Narron was fired and is still true now.Has Grady Little learned how to manage or is he still a moron?
Has Uncle Charlie done anything crazy lately? I can't think of anything.
He sat Victorino for Burrell in both ends of a double header with the Mets over the weekend.
I assumed Victorino had nagging injuries. How do you sit Victorino for both ends of the DH?

Wow. This is out of character from a guy who set aside any griping about a contract extension once the season started.

GB Sox fans. Speaking as a Dodger fan, I love the guy and admire the way he's brought young and old players together and gotten them to consistently perform at a high level. Zero complaints here.

Dent is Out
Bench coach Bucky Dent is out. He'll be replaced by GCL Reds manager Pat Kelly. Part-time coach Ed Napolean resigned.
Is this is a step toward brining Girardi in?

Burrell had excellent career numbers against the Mets. Victorino was dropped to 6th anyway before that with Bourn being a terror out of the 2 spot. Guy has to play some time.
