ASHBURN, Va. (AP) -- No dress-up again Thursday for Washington Redskins running back Clinton Portis, who did not practice but remains confident he'll play in Sunday night's game against the Dallas Cowboys.

"As far as I know I'm playing," Portis said. "Unless something changes between now and Sunday."

Portis carried 10 times for 39 yards in a relief role in Monday night's 19-16 loss to the Minnesota Vikings. Leading up to the game, he indicated he would not play because he was still recovering from a partially dislocated left shoulder.

This week, the shoulder is sore from the contact against the Vikings. Portis took part in a portion of Wednesday's practice and worked Thursday on strengthening and conditioning.

"I'm real sore," Portis said. "I'm just trying to stay on top of things, trying to build the strength up to where it stays the same so we don't have any setbacks."

Portis is listed as questionable on the injury report, the same as he was this time last week.

"He's got a little bit of soreness, but he gets better each day," trainer Bubba Tyer said. "His strength is getting back to where it was, so we're taking it day by day."

The injury is keeping Portis from resuming his weekly appearance in costume. On Thursday he wore a towel on his head and a T-shirt depicting many of the characters he portrayed last year.

"I've got stuff to worry about besides finding a costume right now," he said.

Nice post thanks.Portis will play and carry it between 10-15 times..imo. I expect to see Duckett this week as well. Both teams will be playing this like a playoff game. Loser goes to 0-2. I believe the stats say only 8% of teams that have gone 0-2 make the playoffs.

Thanks Moose.

Is it me, or can't Portis ever just come out and say what it is? Why all of the drama? Reminds me of his Denver days when he had, IIRC, a bad ankle. Never a straight answer from the guy on if he's playing or starting. Always got to have some sort of doubt on it. "Unless something changes between now and Sunday." WTF?

I disagree I think he is being honest.

Which to me means - I am playing unless something changes.

Yeah what do you want from the guy?

Well, since you asked... :) Less doubt in his statements. It's difficult to believe that he doesn't know for certain at this point if he's playing on Sunday. "As far as I know I'm playing". Why wouldn't he know for sure? What would change between now and Sunday that's different for him than any other player? Of course if he gets hit by a car he's not playing on Sunday, but why all the ambiguity?

Think of it this way. Say you're trying to make plans with someone for Sunday. They tell you, "I'll be there, unless something changes between now and then". Well, are they going to be there or not? Wouldn't you prefer for them to tell you "I'll be there. You can count on it." And this isn't just some casual meeting, they only have 16 games and this one's against a divisional rival.

Bottom line, the dude's a drama queen and it's irritating. Just say what it is, and leave the drama to the ladies.

Agreed. :goodposting:

Think of it this way. The idea is to win a football game and avoid an 0-2 start. Uncertainty in advance of that game forces their opponent prepare for more than one scenario.A bit different than making social plans to meet someone. Unfortunately, he doesn't and shouldn't care about making a commitment to, or irratating fantasy fans.

:goodposting: If the point is to mislead the opponent, then I agree 100%.

Here the facts on 0-2 teams.

2005 - 8 teams start 0-2, all no playoffs.

2004 -7 teams start 0-2, all no playoffs.

2003 - 8 teams start 0-2, only Eagles make playoffs (and do so as a 1st seed!).

2002 - 8 teams start 0-2, only Falcons and Steelets make playoffs (Steelers 3rd seed, Falcons 6th seed)

2001 - 9 teams start 0-2, only Patriots make playoffs (as a 2nd seed)

2000 - 10 teams start 0-2, none make playoffs

1999 - 8 teams start 0-2, none make playoffs

1998 - 11 teams start 0-2, 3 make playoffs (Jets 2nd seed, Bills 5th seed, Cardinals 6th seed)

1997 - 6 teams start 0-2, none make playoffs

1996 - 10 teams start 0-2, 1 makes playoffs (Patriots 2nd seed)

That’s 7 teams of 85 over 10 years, or 8% of teams starting 0-2.

You better bet Portis will see some time.

I predict the hardest fought game of the week.

I expect Portis to be closer to 20 carries. Gibbs will keep him on the field as long as he can take it. I am a pretty hardcore Dallas homer, and as much as I'd like to see the Skins' get killed, I'm willing to bet Portis has a pretty good game.

19 carries 85 yds 1 td

5 rec 30 yds 1 td

As if it wouldn't be anyway. ;) Since Gregg Williams took over the defense, I've never seen them go after anyone the way they went after TO two years ago on defense. They hit him every which way. I'm interested to see how physical they are with him this time around. This whole game is going to be nasty though.

Yep...that's how these two teams roll.If Portis is sore these week, he'll be even worse off next week he's going face a big front 7. I expect Washington to try to take away T.O...they have had success is the past as mentioned. They have also held JJ in check. I would look for Glenn to be the guy to make a big play.I am nervous about this game (Cowboy fan). Flip a coin.

Seriously. This is like rivalry week in college. Yeah, you think a team is better (or hotter, or less injured, or better coached, etc.) but you just never know because crazy stuff always seems to happen. I love that the games are like this again . . . even if the lead-up is agony. :) Don't forget Witten. Dallas has more offensive weapons this year than they've had in recent memory, maybe even dating back to the days with Aikman, Emmit, Irvin and Novacek. I don't see how the 'Skins can lock up more than one guy when they're light a starting CB. They didn't blitz a lot Monday versus Brad Johnson and the WCO and its short drops. I have a feeling that they're going to be all about pressure at Dallas figuring that someone's going to either hit Bledsoe or Jones if they get in the backfield. Besides, that pressure would be applied to the weak spot in the Dallas offense, which is the line. Witten would be the guy I pick to have a big game. I've never thought Glenn was all that tough and Taylor will of course be playing "center field". Owens will get his catches, but if he gets more than 100 yards and a TD this could be a very long day for the 'Skins.

I'm not real high on Witten this year. I still believe that Glenn is the biggest beneficiary of TO's arrival. If the Cowboys don't fix the right side of the line..they are toast. Parcells will continue to try and run even when it fails.PS...If you know anyone on the Skins staff. Tell them that we run a draw on every second down. I just about put my foot through my TV on Sunday.

Why don't you like Witten? I would think TO's presence would benefit everyone, and Bledsoe's always been a guy to throw to his TE's, and of course they're often check-down receivers when there's pressure. Parcells should pound the ball even if he's averaging 1.5 ypc. That line needs there to be some doubt in the minds of the defense about run vs. pass.

That is a horrible analogy. This one's closer:Say you're trying to make plans with someone who just injured their shoulder to play in a softball game you're organizing for Sunday. He's feeling better today, but if he has a setback, he can't play. So he tells you, "I'll be there, unless something changes between now and then".

If he's dressed in drag, then I think your analogy nailed it.

I believe in my projections this year I said.Witten's catches go up.

Yards go down.

TD's go way down.

T.O. will be the prime Red Zone target.

Glenn will score the deep balls and deep TD's.

Fasano is very under rated in the passing game. I predict he steals 1-2 of Wittens TD.

I see Witten more as a possession receiver.

Sorry for the hi-jack to the original poster.

Fair point about Fasano and the red zone TD's. Makes sense. As for the hijack, you can hijack this Honda without much guilt at all.
