In the market for one...

Have never purchased. What are some must have features? Places to look for a good deal?

I like the French Door design with the freezer on the bottom. I would think an ice maker is a must as well.

What else ya got?

I was just in the market a few weeks ago and did a lot of research. You will find bad reviews that will make you afraid to buy anything. The more features you get, the better the chance of a problem in the future. I finally decided on a Whirlpool. I got a freezerless one to go with a stand alone freezer I recently got.

My old was a frigidaire with French doors, ice maker and water. I don't need all the bells and whistles. I just want something that won't break down. I can make ice in trays and be content but that just me personally.

If I was getting one with a freezer I think I would prefer it on the bottom. I'm taller and don't like reaching down. I also wanted glass shelves and a big enough storage in the door for gallon milks. There's lots of options out there. I would stay away from frigidaire personally. If you go with Sears Kenmore try to find out who made it. Frigidaire makes some of those too.

Thanks NREC34

Great point about: more options = more potential issues. I hadn't thought of that.

We have a French door with bottom freezer, ice maker and water, but not in the door taking valuable space. Ice maker is in freezer and water is in side wall (inside fridge).

I highly recommend. Hard to find though.

If you're a bottled water guy the water on the fridge will not replace bottles for you. You'll still buy bottles. Trust me, my house knows from experience and the filters for the water are stupid expensive as well.

Samsung french door bottom freezer ice/water in the door 8 years 0 problems

We use the crap out of the water and ice...I'll never go without it again

Very happy with my Kitchenaid side by side w/o ice/water maker. It was hard to find one without it but I didn't need it and they use up space.

you dont need to change the filters ever

LG french door with freezer on the bottom, water/ice in the door. 33 cubic feet. Love it. Sears Kenmore Elite uses LG for their fridges as well. ~3 years so far and zero issues with it.

I bought this behemoth about 6 months ago. http://www.samsung.com/us/appliances/refrigerators/RF323TEDBSR/AA

I love it so far. Far superior to the GE French door model I replaced. The dual ice maker is an awesome feature for our needs. It takes up a hell of a lot of space though, so it is definitely not for everyone. Don't believe that "suggested retail price" on the Samsung page. I bought mine at Lowes for under $2K. Obviously, owning it or only 6 months thus far, I can not speak to its durability, but so far so good.

I bought a whole kitchen set from abt.com on Black Friday. I searched for a month and they were a few hundred dollars cheaper than anyone else. Free shipping (to my garage) and no tax. I was nervous buying online for appliances, but I got the product codes and checked them out in person at a local store. I'd do it again.

This. Perfection.

We have this... as renters. Its good, but ours has doors that arent on self closers or are weighted properlt to close and has an alarm bell when the doors don't close all the way. Obvious mistake and annoying.

I spec these things for work... but only the Subzero and more expensive.

Another key thing is how much depth do you have? If you want it flush with your cabinets and not sticking out post them several inches, that limits your options.

I did recently get a shallow FisherPaykel for our office that's pretty great. But no water or I've maker.

Abt is a local place here in Chicago, should never worry about buying anything from them online.

ETA and if you actually talk to someone you are very likely to get a better than the sale price. I just bought a new Weber and got it 150 less then the sale price.

Door has two positions, self closing or all the way open. If they are all the way open they stay open which is great when you are loading groceries in.

I don't mind the non counter depth, those fridges suck IMO since they hold so much less and significantly more expensive. My SIL had to get one and it cost her an additional 1k to get the counter depth one.

SubZero and FisherPaykel are pretty pricey brands no?

Good idea, let the mold grow! http://library.chansonwater.com/2012/07/06/the-dangers-of-using-your-refrigerators-built-in-water-ice-dispenser/

How hard is it to fill an ice cube tray?
I don't have an ice machine in the front door but I have one that dumps cubes into a bucket in the freezer. I love it.
So you choose convenience over a smaller carbon footprint?
For the first time you've made me stop and go, "huh". Tiny savings of not opening the door (letting warm air in) to retrieve ice vs the larger expense of a (heated) motor to dump ice from the mold. I'm over ice makers (breakdowns, slow dispensing) anyway so next fridge may not have one. Cold water dispenser though I want.

If fridge manufacturers would replace the bells and whistles with a 20 year warranty, they would make a killing.

Check out Sears Outlet if there is one in your area. They usually run good sales off the already reduced price.

Yep. One thing I found everyone said was do not buy a warranty on a refrigerator. They make them like throwaway items now.

I've been tempted several times to put a commercial/restaurant reach-in in my house. My current set up is the best I've had. I extended my kitchen into what was a too small dining room. I have a chest freezer that doubles as clean counter space (nothing on it so we can open the door). A carpenter matched a lid/cutting board to the cabinetry. It has an ice maker. I have two 17.7 cu ft freezerless fridges side by side. Both delivered for under $1500 last fall. There's not a lot of food in the house atm, so one of them is turned off. No bells and whistles, but tons of space, or not, versatile, happy with it. Most homes won't have space for a setup like this but I got the idea from my sister's house that did. She has separate units side by side, one a stand up freezer, the other the fridge.

Fwiw, commercial models like Traulsen have really loud fans.
I know. I was close on a True 23T but that sucker roared. It did have an exterior exhaust system that made sense. Fridge's put out a lot of heat. I run an AC 20/7 in the heat of summer. Having a fridge exhaust through the oven vent seems smarter than having it not exhaust anywhere but all over my already overheated home.

Dimensions make a huge difference if you're space constrained. I personally like side by sides. GE, whirlpool have been good for years

Yup. My house was built in the 70s. I added onto it several years ago, but the kitchen stayed the same until last summer. How did they get by with those tiny fridges back then!? I took out the overhead cabinets a decade ago to fit what by today's standards is pretty small, 20 cu ft. That left me with a freezer and back up fridge in the garage, which is just stupid when the summer temps hit. So I forfeited a kitchen nook dining space to have more indoor refrigeration than I need.

The 20 cu fter had a bottom freezer. I thought I would like it better, but I didn't. It's in the garage now, unplugged. I think it's storing Christmas ornaments.

We got a nice LG open box from best buy that had a few minor scratches and a small shallow dent for ~2k with extended warranty snd 0% interest for 18 months a few months ago and love it. Think it was a floor model too. It took us a week to find it as inventory changed and we went to a few different best buys before we found the one we went with.

Do you have ANY idea what the ice tray factories contribute to pollution in this country?

I make my ice cubes using old watermelon rinds.

Bought a Kitchenaid a few years ago. Don't remember the square footage, but it's fairly large with French doors and a bottom freezer. The thing I would suggest is making sure you have a clear understanding of the delivery terms. Day of delivery I was surprised to get a phone call informing me that they couldn't bring it into the kitchen because it would require removal of doors.

Once you figure out what one you like, Home Depot is probably the move - if they sell that particular model - for two reasons:

(1) You can register for the Lowe's 10% off "moving" coupon to reduce the cost as Home Depot will match it.

(2) They also had the cheapest extended warranty - when we bought ours 2 years ago, it was about another $120 for five years.

Basically, the Lowe's movers coupon covered the warranty and a good portion of the tax. Fortunately, they were selling the model we wanted on a crazy deal no one (BestBuy, HHGregg, PCRichard, Sears) would touch before the mover's coupon and those other places had warranty prices that were much more expensive for LESS years.

Unfortunately, I can't/won't recommend our particular model (LG LFX31925ST) because there is a class action suit going on now with it regarding issues. But, it is a darn nice fridge and the newest model has a "door-within-a-door" to reduce your refrigeration waste when getting a bottle out that is on the door (the one at the link in post #41).

We have a 48" GE that was in the house when we bought it. Would never buy one. Looking to replace with Subzero.

John I think you should just wait for holidays when fridges go on sale then go to a sears and ask an employee for them to recommend you their best fridge.
