Reggie Wayne fuming at Peyton Manning (1 Viewer)

"Reggie Wayne still was doing a slow, quiet, frustrating burn as he deliberately dressed.

"It's bull. It's bull, man," the five-time Pro Bowl receiver said after being a non-factor in the Indianapolis Colts' 17-16 loss to the New York Jets in Saturday night's AFC wild-card playoff game at Lucas Oil Stadium.

"I give everything I've got no matter what. Every day, I give it everything. And . . . one ball, that's all."

During the regular season, Wayne finished second in the NFL with a career-best 111 receptions. Against the Jets and Pro Bowl cornerback Darrelle Revis, he had one catch for 1 yard.

More frustrating to Wayne was the fact quarterback Peyton Manning delivered only one pass in his direction.

"I shouldn't have even suited up," Wayne said. "I should have watched the game like everybody else. I was irrelevant."

The last time Wayne had just one catch in a game in which he played from start to finish was Sept. 9, 2004, at New England (one catch, 42 yards).

Manning's 26 pass attempts matched his season low. He sent a team-high eight each to rookie receiver Blair White and tight end Jacob Tamme.

Pierre Garcon was the most productive receiver, catching five passes for 112 yards. including a 57-yard touchdown.

Short on third-and-1

Who could argue if third-and-1 is engraved on the Colts' headstone from the loss to the Jets.

Six times Manning stood over a third-and-1. Four times the offense trotted off the field after being unable to pick up 36 inches. The Colts' first three drives stalled because of failure on third-and-1 situations.

"I guess you give (the Jets) credit," left tackle Charlie Johnson said. "That's what you're supposed to do, give them credit for stopping us.

"At the same time, we know it's stuff that we did. It was a bad job on our part."

On the first three possessions, Joseph Addai was swarmed under for a 2-yard loss, a Manning completion to White went for no gain and Manning threw low to Tamme.

The Colts finally got their act together and converted two of their final three third-and-1s. Running back Dominic Rhodes accounted for the two successful ones with a pair of 3-yard runs."

I'm not sure that Reggie Wayne being more involved would have changed things. Peyton was efficient as a passer, but the jets played a great game. I was cheering for the colts but the better team won. Shrug

Did Wayne give everything he had last year in the Super Bowl when he cut off that route because he saw a defender coming, allowing the pass to be picked off, returned for a TD, and essentially ending the game?

I think that the Colts played better football the majority of the game, however could not execute when it counted. You let any team hang in there and you are putting yourself in a position to lose. Wayne did not appear to be getting separation but most receivers think they are open all of the time. Colts have themselves to blame for letting this one slide away.

The Colts needed a TD not Field Goals.

I hate to say it but Peyton Manning seemed too gun shy to give Wayne a chance to make a play. Very unlike the Manning I have gotten used to over the past decade. Sure his audibles to the run were very effective at times but they needed a TD. Manning being shut down by the Jets dropping 7 or more into coverage? Manning should have been able to find a way to beat it but instead too often settled for the run and thus field goals.

Wow. I thought only TO and R. Moss were supposed to complain like this?

I never thought the goodie-goodie Colts receivers would ever do this.

After the pick 6's, I think Manning has been too conservative in his decision making.

Pick 6 or no, you have to trust your #1 WR to make a play at some point.

I think that is what drives Wayne nuts. He wasn't even given an opportunity to beat Revis one-on-one. Manning sees he is covered and then immediately looks to someone else.

hard to fault him too much, though, as they have been winning games with this approach and probably should have won today...I think the WR situation - playing with a bunch of inexperienced and new guys did take its toll

I saw reggie make a pretty hard block on a DB late in the third quarter -ish and his body language did look like he was frustrated out there

gotta get the ball in the hands of your best players

Reggie Wayne is a baby.
 Although I give him a pass because he said it shortly after the loss.THe Colts should look at the Pats who have a fantastic qb as well. It is the qb that makes the offense go, not the receivers/tight ends. (And Philip Rivers is showing that in SD as well). DOn't waste a ton of money on receivers when you have a great qb. The Colts would be fine with Garcon/Collie/White/Tamme. But they have a ton locked up in Wayne and Clark. They need to invest in both lines. Badly.

Even before this, I thought there was a good chance he'd be playing elsewhere next season.

Now even better that it will happen.

No it's called being highly competitive and wanting to win. He was pissed off. He has a right to vent. 111 reasons he has a right to call out for a bigger role in a single elimination playoff. I would be more concerned if he just got up and left. To only get a one pass thrown your way and your the teams best WR....problem. Revis is great but you got to challenge him to. Peyton Manning was very un-Peyton like this season. He seemed gun shy last night. And they still almost pulled the game out. It's not like Reggie Wayne has a history of having a big mouth and complaining. He must have been very frustrated that Manning basically did not look his way much and did not at least throw a few his way so he can make a play and try and help his team win.

I tend to say the corner-receiver match ups are overrated because even the best corners get beat, but Revis is insane. Did you see the stats they were talking about yesterday? He has zero picks and zero penalties on the season. People don't even bother throwing at him.

I couldn't disagree with this more if I tried. The Colts need to add a stud WR in the worst way given Wayne's age and that he's lost a step. Collie is very close to being out of the league if he suffers many more concussions. White is average and Garcon is inconsistent. Julio Jones or Michael Floyd would look good in Royal Blue.

You would rather them spend more $$$ on a receiver then fix their glaring holes on the O Line and interior D? I understand people criticizing the running backs, but I cannot think of a worse run blocking line that the COlts. And they don't just need 1 lineman, they need several. And the interior D Line was consistently driven off the ball.Garcon's drops are maddening, he obviously has tremendous skills, but man, he seems to drop one for every one he catches! Still, Garcon/Collie (I understand the injury issue)/White/Tamme is a good enough corps to win with.

The Colts have never been a great running team since the Edge prime years, but yes they need to get better. I would look at OL in free agency. You never take a player out of need in the early rounds of draft if they don't grade out to that pick. This is a baaaad year for OL. They drafted a DE last year in the first round (Jerry Hughes), so I hope he can see the field in 2011. They will have a lot of DBs back from injury next year, even though I feel they will cut Bob Sanders. YOU DON'T PASS UP JULIO JONES IF HE FALLS IN YOUR LAP!!!!

Just to clarify on the Pick manning threw to Tracy Porter to end the game last year was a product of studying game film. They interviewed Tracy Porter after the game he said he recognized the formation and how Wayne lined up he knew what direction they were going with it. So Tracy Porter jumped the route is why he picked Manning. It was a timing route that was intended to get a first down and Porter saw it and jumped the route when he knew Manning was going that direction with the pass.

Just thought I would clarify and put my 2 cents in. :moneybag:

Manning could shake his head all he wants but all i gotta say is he audibled to a run play in the red zone in the 4th quarter. Of course, the Colts had to settle for a FG. Manning respected Revis way too much imo. Reggie Wayne has all the right to be mad.

I knew someone would point to this. He also audibled to a run on two other 3rd and longs, and the Colts got a first down.

Didn't you get the feeling he went to that well one too many times?

He was in the redzone, other times he wasn't. It seemed like they were settling for a field gola... He was being too conservative. He gets paid big money to throw the damn ball and score TDs. Throw the damn ball!!!!

Wayne cost the Colts the superbowl last year. If I was Manning I wouldn't trust him.
Yeah, Manning had no reason (unless 111 catches count) to trust him. The truth is, Revis is intimidating and an amazing cover corner....but in a huge game like this, you gotta figure out a way to give your best receiver more than one measly chance to make a game changing play. Was it Peyton's fault, or was it the OC fault for not figuring something out?

Manning is the OC.

If it was me, with the Colts run game, I wouldn't have gone once to be honest. I didn't like it the 3 times he called it. But 2 did go for first downs. If it is crunch time, I want the ball in the hands of my franchise player. Peyton should have took his chances throwing the ball, IMO.

I am a fan of guys who can produce and be big time players on the field. Owens while a major malcontent off the field is a future Hall of Fame WR. And yes I am a fan of his on-field play. He is great. You make it sound as if Reggie Wayne has a history of this. Far from it. If I were him I would have been very upset as well right after losing a game like that. Everyone is making a mountain out of a mowhill with his post game comments. He is a superstar veteran player who had a right to express his frustration.

This is one I can see both sides of. As a Wayne owner, I had all eyes on Reggie and Peyton exclusively. While Revis definitely brought his A-game, it's not like Peyton checked Wayne and went to a secondary receiver. On all but a handful of plays, Peyton didn't even GLANCE left.

So again, I can see both sides. Wayne simply was NOT open very often, but that's not the point. Peyton had already decided this was a 10-on-10 game in the film room. That's what Reggie was pissed about and I think he had a right to be.

Im gonna go ahead and say, Peyton Manning would be Peyton Manning with or without Reggie Wayne. Not so sure of the other way around...

Keep your mouth shut Reggie. Peyton doesnt call you out everytime you drop the ball or get alligator arms over the middle (Reggie is known as a guy who doesn't like to take a hit in Indy).

Actually, pretty much every time Peyton loses or has a bad game it is always somebody else's fault. That's not a leader.

I agree Peyton is a poor leader because we make excuses for him.

where the heck do you get that from? it's not like wayne was some undrafted player who was rotting somewhere till he showed up in indy and exploded. He was a first round pick, and judging by his career Wayne would be fine barring a John Skelton/Derek Anderson type at QB.People love getting on Wayne for drops, but every time he makes a spectacular catch it's "wow, manning put it in a place where only his receiver could catch it." I dont care if Revis was draped all over Wayne, squeeze it in, he is the great Peyton Manning right? Then again his playoff record is under .500 and didn't the Chad Pennington era jets shut the colts out 41-0 in '02? 2nd worst shutout loss in post-season history.....guess that was wayne's fault too......imagine if Wayne actually called him an "idiot qb" peyton would never call one of his teammates an idiot.......

 I do love his new Sony commercial though. Hilarious

I have no horse in this race, but if Manning forced two more balls into Wayne throughout the game and one resulted in an INT, we would be calling Manning out for being cocky and thinking he could beat Revis. It was the right play to ignore Wayne when you have Garcon, White and Tamme in there...now if Wayne was on a team with WRs like the 9ers, I could see the frustration factor...but in a way, by garnering all the attention of Revis, he took the best defensive player out of the game too...just sucks when you have to sacrifice your best offensive weapon to do so.

and if Wayne made some spectacular 1 hand catch upside down on his head , we'd be saying "wow what a throw by peyton manning"Manning's problem is he's too textbook, sometimes the right play isn't the one the textbook tells you to follow. If he sees a certain defense, the he barks out whatever the textbook says is the right play to go up against it, and most of the times the textbook is pretty accurate and he comes off looking great..........but sometimes the textbook is outdated, and always going by the book doesn't work out. He needs to improvise and change things up a little more. Just like all those audibles on 3rd and longs he called. Yea the textbook said, they should run, but just cause the jets are playing pass heavy doesnt mean you shouldnt pass it at all in that situation.

Wayne took the best defensive player out of the game too and that's a good thing? not really, Revis job is to take Wayne and render him useless......dont see how you can say REvis was taken out of the game because he did his job so well. Revis was gonna be on Wayne all day regardless if he had 1 catch for 9 yards 8 for 120 yards. It's not like Rex was gonna say, ok Wayne's burning revis, let's put Kyle WIlson on him!

If Manning's that great, he should force the ball to wayne in spots where only his receiver would have a chance at it........it's ridiculous to not even try. If Peyton Manning was a point guard in basketball, he'd be the guy who sees kobe bryant double-teamed and says "ok let's pass the ball to ron artest."
