RESPECT! Aretha just killed it (1 Viewer)

I love that most people who demand that everyone respect the flag/anthem are also the same people who demand that it be a mindless rendition, that can be done quickly and on autopilot.
It's disrespectful to sing the anthem any other way than the way it was sung 200 years ago.

I get it's Aretha Franklin and she certainly deserves a ton of respect and can take liberties with what ever kind of music she wants. I get that that's probably as heartfelt a rendition as anyone else's. But There's a time and place for everything. She wants to make a splash with a this song, or any other, go on The Voice or American Idol and have at it.

Wasn't like she Rosanned it and grabbed her crotch. It wasn't disrespectful, just drawn out waaaaay longer than it should. Kind of like the last two minutes of Hey Jude compared to the last two of American Pie

To me, the whole point of the anthem is take a brief moment to remind us that for better or worse, we are in this thing together. A lot of things had to transpire for us to get where we are and have the opportunities we are afforded. To that end, I think the anthem should be either played at a steady, brisk tempo by a band, or sung in such a fashion that those in the audience who wish to sing, hum, or mumble along with it can partiticapte for a minute or so before we get back to stabbing people in parking lots for wearing the wrong color jersey.
Here's Walk Off The Earth doing their version of our National Anthem earlier this year.

Oh Canada

They made it their own, it was quick and I think it was perfect.

Somewhat recognizable would have been fine.  Criticism is also a freedom enjoyed in a democracy.
