Retired players have been notoriously left to fend for themselves, suffering from the ravages of playing in the days of inferior medical knowledge, sub-par equipment, and the general advanced physical break down following life in the NFL.

The increase in benefits laid out in this article are still not enough, considering the foundation that the older players built for both the NFL and current players.

Don't be a jerk. Lots of the old guys never got to cash in, and many players have significant health conditions.And what do you mean by the rich getting richer? The CBA specifies exactly how much revenue goes to player salaries and how much goes to pension and benefits. Without the players to make the game what it is, there would be no revenue. And without the benefits plan, the money would go directly to the owners, who are mega-billionaires.

I personally know a guy who played in the NFL back in the late 70s/early 80s before the $$ took off. Poor guy ankle is screwed up and has to get injections into both knees so they work right. He was told he would probably need some joint replacements soon.

I know a lot of the older guys(at least here in MN) worked other jobs in order to support their families while playing in the NFL...even the great ones. They were way underpaid. I'm so sick of seeing these rookies come in never having played a down in the NFL getting paid more money than guys who have been doing it for years.(R.Bush wants to be the highest paid RB in the league?) I'm glad they are doing something for the old-timers.
