Chester McGlockton dies at 42

ESPN.com news services

Chester McGlockton, a four-time Pro Bowl defensive tackle with the Los Angeles/Oakland Raiders who played 12 seasons in the NFL, died early Wednesday morning. He was 42.

The announcement was made by Stanford University, where McGlockton was in his second season as a defensive assistant.

"Everyone in the Stanford football family is deeply saddened by the passing of Chester McGlockton," Stanford coach David Shaw said in a statement. "For the past two seasons, Chester has been a valuable member of our football staff and a wonderful friend to us all. Our thoughts and prayers go out to Chester's wife, Zina, and their two children."

McGlockton's final NFL season was 2003 with the New York Jets. He also played with the Denver Broncos, Kansas City Chiefs and Raiders, who drafted him 16th overall in the first round of the 1992 draft.

He registered 555 tackles, 51 sacks, 14 forced fumbles and four interceptions in his career. He made four straight Pro Bowl trips starting in 1994.

A native of Whiteville, N.C., McGlockton played collegiately for three seasons at Clemson. He received his undergraduate degree from Tennessee-Martin in 2010.

Huge former players carrying way too much weight, dying early. It never ends. RIP Glock. :(
I would guess that is the case, but have they mentioned what the cause was yet?
"Ex-NFL player from Whiteville dies of heart attack"
Chester McGlockton, considered one of the greatest football players this area has produced, died of a massive heart Wednesday morning in his home in California."I am completely stunned,'' former Whiteville assistant and current West Brunswick assistant Yogi Hickman said.Hickman was the offensive coordinator for McGlockton's four years at Whiteville High School, beginning in 1984."He was the greatest high school player I ever saw,'' Hickman said. "I remember in his first game, ever, he intercepted a pass and returned it for a touchdown and he also caught a touchdown pass in that game.''McGlockton, 42, still holds the all-time North Carolina High School Athletic Association record with nine interception returns for touchdowns. He also led the Wolfpack to the 1987 state 2A championship."Boy was he good both on and off the field,'' Hickman said. "He was so generous with his money.''McGlockton furnished the Wolfpack basketball team, in particular, with uniforms and purchased state championship rings for all the hoops players as well as cheerleaders in the late 1990s.In 2009, he was inducted into the Greater Wilmington Sports Hall of Fame. In May went into the South Carolina Sports Hall of Fame because of a standout football career at Clemson, and he was the Los Angeles Raiders' first-round selection in 1992.He played 12 seasons in the NFL, making four Pro Bowls. In recent years, he had been a collegiate coach. For the past two seasons, he was a defensive assistant coach at Stanford.

I'll also add, my son is friends with a boy in school whose father was an O-lineman in the late 90s-mid 2000s. Guy is in such phenomenal shape, he looks like Jeff Garcia on a larger scale. It is interesting because he has a legit 9-6 job and still manages to stay in shape. Not saying Chester passed due to weight, but you would think working on a collegiate football team, you would just sneak in a 30 minute workout each day as you are visiting players in the weight room etc. I rarely workout, but if the place was next to my office, I would just do it because it is there.

You don't know that he didn't work out daily.Heart attacks happen to incredibly fit, young people too.Jumping to conclusions at a time of loss is counter-productive.
but deaths to young former lineman is an epidemic....too much so to ignore as a coincidence.

True.My point was that the poster doesn't really know what Chester did/didn't do with regards to his health.Just think it's terrible to assume things right after a tragic and early death.

RIP Chester.

I played against him in high school, and without a doubt, the lick he put on me is the hardest hit I ever felt. I seriously thought he had broken my shoulder. I saw him the following spring at a track meet, where he was competing in the shot put, and he was a really quiet and humble guy.

Man, what a bummer. I actually hung out with him, twice, when he was with the Raiders. He was in this Irish pub in LA I used to frequent and I don't think many knew who he was, which he liked. So we started bull####ting and stuff and ended up going to this club. Played pool there and ogled women. Super mellow guy. Didn't talk much football, but I do remember him saying all he wanted to do when it was over was go back home down south to relax...and fish.

We met up at the same place like a week later or so and this one chick that came to meet him was a total bich. I don't know what her deal was ($$$?) -- maybe she thought I was trying to manage his money (was a broker at the time), I don't know -- but I ended up bailing and letting her do her thing. Never did see him again. Talked to him one more time after that and then he was off to Oakland.

Very nice, soft-spoken guy. Sad.

Clemson just seems to have bad luck. William Perry, Gaines Adams, McGlockton, Clarke Bynum, and I know there were 1 or 2 1st round picks in basketball that either died or had to retire.

Very sad indeed. RIP. Though the Fridge is still alive and well.

The Fridge is alive, but not well. i read an article recently in a Chicago paper that he can barely get out of the chair. Some disease, I believe.
