He died after falling down a flight of stairs in his Madisonville home Saturday. He was home alone.
I have the 78 Championship game on DVD and I love to replay it every so often. Mike Phillips was very important to UK during that season and that last game. One half of the twin towers is gone but not forgotten.
Former coach Joe B Hall on Phillips -
"He was a perfect fit for Rick Robey," Hall said. "They complemented each other and made the team better with their unselfish play. ... The big thing about Mike is he was a competitor. He played for the team and he played to win. He was a great teammate to his fellow players, one that took any role as needed."
Hall said over the years that he had kept up with Phillips and the two had gone goose-hunting and fishing together.
"He was fun to be around, though he was what you'd call a quiet person," Hall said. "He was very proud to be a Wildcat."
A native of Ohio, Phillips averaged more than 10 points a game during that 1978 season and finished his UK career 25th on the program's all-time scoring list.
