Rivers and Gates both listed as Doubtful (1 Viewer)

As a Pats fan, I'd prefer to have a gimpy Rivers in there forcing plays that he might not be able to physically make than a healthy Volek "playing not to lose."

No Gates is huge, as SD's biggest advantage would be using Gates to exploit Pats lack of speed at LB. (Though Harrison has done a surprisingly good job on athletic TEs this year.)

I would expect Tomlinson and Sproles to both get plenty of targets in the passing game. I think they'll try to exploit Bruschi in coverage, and Bruschi wouldn't have been on Gates anyway.

What kind of mobility does Volek bring? Rivers, with bum knees, would be a tasty target sitting farily stationary in the pocket. Does Volek change that dynamic, if Rivers can't go?

Volek made some nice plays against Indy when he rolled out, he seemed a little speedier, may buy himself an extra second. But watching him this pre-season made me... :tfp: Whitehurst looked better at times.....Problem will be all the deep timing and fades then have been running a LOT to VJ and Chambers. I don't have confidence that Volek can make those throws. But if the wind get really bad, that might even it out....

Earlier, I saw someone saying Volek has a pretty weak arm. If thats the case, it would just about shut down a SD passing game beyond 10-15 yards downfield. Velocity can beat the wind, but you need arm strength to do that.

Rotoworld is saying that Rivers did practice today, does anyone know the extent? Just throwing on the side lines or actually in there taking some reps?

He was taking reps. He seemed pretty optimistic about playing on Sunday in his press conference.

depending on the PS, i'd love to bet big money on the Pats. In a situation like this though, wouldn't vegas pull the PS and issue a "no line" instead if critical players of one team are unable or doubtful to play?

Volek has a pretty good arm actually. I'm not sure who said he had a bad arm, but that's not true.

Rivers Injury Update

Kevin Acee, of The San Diego Union-Tribune, reports San Diego Chargers QB Philip Rivers (knee) has a partially torn anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) in his right knee to go along with the sprained medial collateral ligament. Rivers practiced Friday, Jan. 18, for the first time this week with a brace on his right knee. He is expected to test the knee before the game Sunday, Jan. 20. A sports medicine expert said it is possible for Rivers to play with a partially torn ACL. If he does play he could be limited due to the injury.
