I watched most of the indy/bears game and it looked like Mathis was a starter.

From what i saw, Mathis played A LOT of snaps and looked like a starter. Is there something i don't know?

I know he's been a starter, but in article Dungy is saying that Mathis is going to have a different role this year.

It has to be a big play, sack heavy league for this guy to be worth it.

In the Bears game, there was a lot, a LOT, of plays with both Mathis and Freeney on the sideline, with Brock at LE. I am not sure if this was the part of the scheme for just this game, or if it was injuries or what, but I don't think it's a good sign for Mathis OR Freeney.

This is exactly what happened last night. I didn't count the snaps, but Freeney played very little. Despite that, Robert Mathis saw about as much time as he saw last season in the base defense, maybe less. I think Raheem Brock had probably 2/3 of the base defensive snaps at left end.Not good for Mathis at all.

Analysis: All kinds of fallout here; Johnson's loss is major. Mathis had six stops, a sack, and a forced fumble in Indy's opener, so it's not like he was riding the pine. But he's an official starter again and won't come off on early downs.

Given the above posted comments, what impacts does this have for Mathis and other IDPs at Indy ?

It'll be interesting to see what occurs with Johnson gone. The primary source is only speculating that Brock will move back inside, but it's solid speculation. However, even if Brock moves inside, Mathis may still not be an every-down end. If Dwight Freeney is ready to play on early downs, Josh Thomas could move over and take the early down snaps from Mathis, similar to last season.If Mathis plays 50 snaps, he's proven he can be a top ten IDP value.

Sweet Mary Jane, if Mathis isn't going to be a 3 down back...this has to at least increase his snaps.

Eric Foster to start at NT

Eric Foster, who signed as a free-agent from Rutgers University shortly after this past April’s NFL Draft, likely will start at tackle alongside second-year veteran Keyunta Dawson, Colts Head Coach Tony Dungy said Wednesday.

Veteran ends Raheem Brock and Josh Thomas also could contribute inside, Dungy said, and the Colts – who recently added defensive tackle Daniel Muir off waivers from Green Bay – also Thursday signed defensive tackle LaJuan Ramsey.

Looks like the speculation in regard of Mathis being a 3 down DL was just that.

Analysis: This would force Robert Mathis to slide back todefensive end, which would leave the middle of the defense open to the run more. Upgrade Le'Ron McClain and Willis McGahee if Freeeny indeed sits.

Is this analysis on the money ? If Freeney is out, is it reasonable to expect an upgrade in Mathis playing time?

That's what was initially expected to happen when the Colts wanted to ease Freeney back into the lineup. Instead, they chose to move Raheem Brock outside and rotate Josh Thomas with Mathis. With the emergence of Eric Foster, that may still work. I'd expect Mathis to see more snaps this week, but I wouldn't count on full time duty, especially against a team that wants to run the ball as much as Baltimore.There isn't anything in the local media that mirrors the analysis above, so I'd consider it the viewpoint of the writer of the site you've visited rather than anything from the team.

Mathis blew them away Sunday - 6 tackles 3 sacks 1 forced fumble

Was this uptick the result of increased playing time due to D Line injuries on the Colts or due to injuries on the Baltimore O Line? or both?

Recent discussions have noted that Mathis's playing time is still restricted primarily to obvious passing downs and that this did not project well down the track. Question this week, is this a signal of a real uptick in production (he is the #2 ranked DL in our league) and has 5 sacks and 3 forced fumbles on the year or is it great sell high point ?

Clearly when Indy have the lead and their opponents are forced to throw, Mathis's chances improve.

Potential question for the IDP podcast.
