Rod Smith - 3 concussions in 1 year (1 Viewer)

(Rotoworld) Rod Smith reportedly suffered a concussion during Sunday's game.

Impact: He was on the sidelines for much of the contest, but the announcers said Smith just had the wind knocked out of him. Smith has now incurred three concussions in the past year. He'll be re-examined today. It's definitely a situation to monitor.

Anyone see the hit? Did it look "concussion-worthy"? Just wondering if the concussions are coming too easily now.

Also, who else has had something like 3 in a year? Just trying to compare.

Will Brandon Marshall make some contributions in the near future, or has his injury set his progress behind? Any Bronco homer's know what the WR situation would look like if Rod missed time?

I could see Smith retiring, rather than risking his health by playing again. Don't they say that once you have one concussion, it becomes easier to get another, and then the chances increase with every concussion that follows that one, and so on and so forth?

Yes, that is true.I am big time screwed. I was already up a creek when I had Rod Smith as my #1 WR.....now I just lost my paddle.

Yes, Smith is at a greater risk for more concussions in the future - he has had 3 since September 26th of '05, according to a report I read in the Denver Post:

"He also suffered concussions against the Chiefs on Sept. 26 last year at Invesco and near the end of the Pro Bowl on Feb. 12 in Hawaii."

"I don't want to talk about them, either," Smith said. "It happens. It's part of the game."

It's true. Nearly every professional football player suffers a concussion. The concern is when the injury repeats, at shorter intervals between each one. Broncos coach Mike Shanahan said the extent of Smith's injury would not be known until the receiver is examined by a specialist today. The hope is Smith will be able to play Sunday night at New England.
Also, as Smith is 36 years old and has played in the pros for 12 years: he's been drilled by a lot of DBs and LBs over those years. Recuperative powers fade with age - this is definitely reason to be concerned IMO if you have Smith on your roster. More information on concussions can be found at this addy
"A concussion occurs when the head sustains a hard blow and the impact jars or shakes the brain inside the skull, interrupting the brain's normal activities. Although there may be cuts or bruises on the head or face, there may be no other visible signs of a brain injury.

Symptoms of a concussion usually include any of the following changes in the person's level of consciousness, such as:

Brief loss of consciousness.

Inability to remember what happened immediately before and after the injury (amnesia).

Confusion.

Asking the same question over and over.

Dizziness, vertigo, lightheadedness, or unsteadiness that prevents standing or walking.

Blurred or double vision.

Ringing in the ears (tinnitus).

In a small child, increased fussiness or lack of energy.

Symptoms of concussion can be mild to severe, depending on the severity of the injury. If the injury is more serious, symptoms will usually develop within the first 24 hours after the accident. Symptoms may last for days, weeks, or even months following the injury."

There has been a lot of grumbling with this in Denver.

The cheap shot by Roy Williams in the pro-bowl didn't help anything either. That POS can jump off a cliff.

If this is indeed true I would actually prefer to see him retire. I'd hate for him to keep playing and see something more severe happen to him. He had a great career, probably the best undrafted player ever IMHO. Hopefully he makes the right choice and thinks about his health and future instead of the game. He's got nothing left to prove.
