Rodgers cleared...will start vs Giants (1 Viewer)

The packers have given up 13 sacks in the past 3 games. The Giants are second in the NFL with 42 sacks. I think Rogers head just started to hurt again.

Gonna be tough for the Giants to bounce back after that absolutely deflating loss last week. I actuallly like the Packers in this one.

Dammit, I was looking forward to picking up and starting Tebow in his place this week. But that just feels silly with him healthy.

I don't believe this is true. Not yet anyway.

I heard on the news tonight he was still having lingering affects.

His final test won't be until tomorrow.

Rodgers: 'I'm baaaaaaacckkkk'

By JASON WILDE

GREEN BAY – The text message was brief and to the point, and the only thing easier to read Tuesday evening was the excitement coming from Aaron Rodgers’ iPhone.

I’m baaaaaaacckkkk.

Yes, after seeing his 46-game consecutive starts streak (including playoffs) snapped when he was inactive for Sunday night’s 31-27 loss to the New England Patriots because of a concussion suffered Dec. 12 at Detroit, the Green Bay Packers quarterback said he has passed all the requisite cognitive tests and been cleared by both team physician Dr. John Gray and an independent neurologist, clearing the way for him to return to action for Sunday’s must-win game against the New York Giants at Lambeau Field.

Rodgers' return wasn't unexpected, but it wasn't a foregone conclusion, either. A number of NFL players have taken longer than a week to be cleared following concussions, under the league's new guidelines.

The Packers’ loss to the Patriots with backup Matt Flynn at quarterback, coupled with the Chicago Bears’ 40-14 victory over the Minnesota Vikings Monday night, clinched the NFC North division title for the Bears and eliminated one more route for the Packers to reach the postseason.

Green Bay (8-6) can still make the playoffs, and its simplest route is to beat fellow NFC playoff contender New York (9-5) and then beat the Bears (10-4) on Jan. 2 at Lambeau Field. If the Packers win those two games, no matter what else happens in the NFC, they’ll make the playoffs as a wild card.

While Flynn played well in his stead, having Rodgers, who suffered the first diagnosed concussion of his football life on Oct. 10 at Washington, back under center certainly will help their chances.

In the wake of last year’s congressional hearings on NFL head injuries, the league instituted strict guidelines on when players should be allowed to return to games or practices after concussions. According to the policy, a player who is diagnosed with a concussion should not be allowed to return to football activities until he is “fully asymptotic, both at rest and after exertion; has a normal neurological examination, normal neuropsychological testing; and has been cleared to return by both his team physician and the independent neurological consultant."

Rodgers suffered his second concussion in nine weeks when his head hit the Ford Field turf hard following an 18-yard scramble after being tackled by Detroit’s Amari Spievey and Landon Johnson with 2 minute 43 seconds left in the first half in the team’s 7-3 loss to the Lions.

Packers coach Mike McCarthy called timeout after the play, and Rodgers stayed in the game but was sacked for a 13-yard loss on the next play, a called pass. Brandon Jackson then gained 6 yards on a handoff, and on third-and-17, Rodgers checked down to Jackson for a 4-yard pickup, forcing a punt. Flynn then replaced him when the Packers got the ball back with 1:14 left in the half.

Rodgers had been listed as doubtful on the team’s official injury report last Friday, but there seemed to be some hope that he might still play when he acted like his normal self during a surprise visit to the locker room during media access following practice and McCarthy backtracked on an earlier statement that a decision would be made by Saturday.

Then, on Saturday morning, the team downgraded Rodgers to out and promoted practice-squad quarterback Graham Harrell to the 53-man roster to back up Flynn against the Patriots.

It was unclear exactly how far Rodgers advanced through the protocol last week; all team officials were willing to say last Saturday was that Rodgers was not far enough along in the process to be medically cleared. Rodgers would have had to show Gray that he was symptom-free (no headaches, blurred vision, sensitivity to light, etc.) and able to test equal to a baseline neuropsychological exam he took before the season. The independent neurologist then would have examined him and determined whether or not he should be cleared.

On Tuesday, Rodgers got the news he was hoping for.

“I’ve been cleared, “Rodgers said. Then, after a pause, he added, “It’s not that big of a story. Is it?”

Not at all.

As we saw last year, this Giants team has some quit in it (not as much as the Cowboys have shown to be fair). I wouldn't be surprised to see GB blow them out in what's likely to be a playoff game for the 6 seed.

Green Bay is desperate. They showed a lot of fight against the best team in the league with their backup QB in the game. Who wants that playoff spot more because basically the winner of this game gets the 6th seed.

What are you talking about Mello, the Cowboys didn't quit on the season, they've played respectable since the firing of Phillips. As far as this game, I'd be shocked if the Giants get blown out. Ya, the Eagles broke their heart but the Giants have a SB winning QB, solid running backs and a good defense along with an experienced coach. They aren't getting blown out this week. The last time we saw Aaron Rodgers he was getting handled by the Detroit Lions.Trust me, the Packers would be happy with a W againt the Giants, this will be a tough game.

I'd feel better about th ePackers chances if Cullen Jenkins was healthy, Collins too. Giants running game is made for December football. The depletion of the Packers defense, not so much. Still, Dom Capers has been the best coach in football this year so who knows if he can't figure something out.

Will Zombo be back?

McCarthy said on Monday that Collins' injury was "better than anticipated" and that Jenkins was shooting for Chicago game. Zombo has "more of a shot this week for the Giants and is progressing"

Things like that don't really have as big an impact on the players as fans think it would. The Giants will move on and play next week. GB may win this game, because they are at home and arguably just as good if not better than the Giants. If GB wins, its not because the Giants lost to the Eagles last week though.

I'd be very surprised to see GB blow them out. The Giants had a big meltdown last week, but they are a good team, and I don't expect that type of meltdown again this week. I also don't think the Giants have quit in them. Their losses this year have come from a series of bad mistakes.

Ugh this is killing me. For a chance at making it to the championship game in my main league (a TD-only league), I can pick between Rodgers and Kitna. Rodgers

obviously is a big reason why I got a 1st round bye and am in the spot I'm at, but even though he was cleared, he's against a very angry, still-playoff-hunting Giants

who have knocked out a number of QBs and will sack him a lot. Kitna has quietly produced for several weeks now and is against a porous AZ defense in AZ. Ugh,

this is killin' me...

I'm really curious to see how things play out Sunday. I was probably being overly harsh above. I was remembering the end of last season where they basically gave up and were blown out by CAR and MIN. If I remember right, they had less of a shot at the playoffs then than they do now so things may turn out differently. That was a soul crushing loss last week though.

The time from when Romo went down to Wade's firing was the worst I've ever seen a team quit mid-season. They are playing much better under Garrett, but that doesn't change the fact that these are the same players that quit. It's not just this year though. In 2008, much of the same Cowboys team were in the driver's seat for the division then underperformed against BAL and completely laid down in that 44-6 debacle at Philly.

Tough to start him against that D but I guess I have to roll him out.
What D, the D where Vick scored 52 points last week (in my league)? If Rodgers is healthy, you start Rodgers just like Vick owners did when the Giants played in NY.
True, a devastating loss that I don't know if this year's Giants can recover from.Having said that, to answer your question, the D that was beating the Hell out of Vick in the first half and has knocked 6 starting QBs out of games this year. That D.

As a Rodgers owner......THAT is was scares me. Championship week........do you dance who got you to the big show......or roll the dice elsewhere? In my case I've got Garrard against the weak Redskins pass defense as a back up. I'll wrestle with this one all week. But, I can tell you that it'll hurt worse if I lost by going with my backup..........the "over-thinking" scenario.

In the same position this weekend but not a TD only league.. Kitna helped me a great deal last week and is going against a really bad AZ team.. I'd have to think they get up and run the ball (I may grab choice and start him in this one) then roll with Rodgers pending health.. They have to win and will need to throw (like Philly last week against the giants).. I like that gb is at home this weekend too.. best of luck!

I'm rolling with Garrard over Rodgers in case Big Blue gets KO number 7, as long as Garrard is healthy that is. Washington packed it in weeks ago.

Not sure if Big Blue can recover from this past weeks epic meltdown. I am sure there will be max protect for Rodgers this week! I would roll with him!

Don't be surprised if Rogers comes out a bit tentative on Sunday. With Osi and Tuck coming off the corners, he's going to be looking out of the corner of his eyes alot. Expect to see the Packers down by 7-10 points by half time and making a game out of it in the 2nd half.

Beasley Reece was a member of the 1978 Giants team and did an interview on Philadelphia radio and he said that loss was the hardest thing to get over in his life, it totally deflated their team that year and looking back on it, it probably set the Giants organization back 5 years. Having lived through the first miracle at the meadowlands, he probably has a pretty good idea what the Giants are going through this week. I'll take his word that it's gonna be difficult for the Giants to bounce back.
