I side with Roger.  Believe it or not, he's made the NFL owners an absolute #### ton of money.  Go on all you want Cowboy fans about what Jones has done for the NFL's value, but Roger's contribution makes it pale in comparison.

Roger's real job is contracts.  He has presided over every contract the NFL has agreed to since 2006.  Well, the numbers don't lie.  The NFL is now grossing over $14 billion every year.  That number has risen exponentially since Goodell took over.  In 2013 the average NFL franchise was valued at just over $800 million.  The Cowboys were the highest, valued at $1.17 billion.  Today, the average franchise is valued at over $2.4 billion and the Cowboys are valued at over $4.2 billion.  The league owners owe Goodell a good chunk of change, no matter what your opinion on the man is.

Then, add that he gets to be the heel for all the nasty #### the owners don't want to deal with and you start to understand why the guy gets(and is asking for) so much.
at the end of this all, Goodell will go down as the worst thing that ever happened to the NFL

So, now there is a theory that Jerry Jones was behind the Papa Johns rant.

Jones owns more than 100 Papa Johns restaurants. I don't think that Papa John would have criticized the NFL without consent from his biggest franchisee.
mike florio has gone ####### nuts and is now a gossip columnist.

his entire theory is a) jones is working puppets (your link)

and b) the other owners will kick Jones out now due to some vague bylaw.  http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2017/11/12/owners-have-their-own-nuclear-option-for-dealing-with-jerry-jones/

neither of these things is true and they are both damn near insane for a professional sports writer of many years to publish.   He's venturing into 9/11 truther territory.

See that's why I can't understand how does Goodell have such strong support. He's terrible at PR. He's botched every suspension I can think of. No matter your feelings on the anthem protest you'd be hard pressed to make the case that he's handled well. Big sponsors are publically calling Goodell out by name. Why would the owners be so unanimous to give him a raise?
Because the public all hates Goodell instead of them

Lots of Cowboy fans hate Jerry Jones but are glad he’s stepping up here.  Ratings are down, Roger has made lots of mistakes on disciplinary action, he still makes up rules on the fly, he has alienated the players, fans hate him. I'd argue there isn't a worse commissioner in sports. Jones is right to say let's wait and see if he fixes things. Especially when they wanna give him nearly 50 million and a private jet.

Regardless of how you feel on the Anthem, he handled it terribly.  I know a lot of us here go to NFL games and see empty seats.  I paid more a few years ago for a Ravens preseason game than I have for a Ravens or Redskins game all year.  Hell, last week in DC was full of purple and you could get seats around the front row end zone for under $100 at game time for two teams in contention.  The Rams have had thousands of tickets for under $10 before they ran through the division and the Chargers couldn’t sell out a soccer stadium.

I don’t need people to lie and tell me the league is fine, I know it’s not.  I love football but the game has gotten awful.  Jerrys concern is that we talk more about suspensions, anthems, and air pressure than comebacks and big hits.  The salary cap has had an opposite effect on parity as every year in the AFC is Brady/Ben/Manning.

Roger has made the NFL about himself and not the teams.

Maybe that's it. Or maybe they are counting on the players hating him even more.

I think the owners don't mind Goodell botching suspension after suspension if it irritates the players enough they are willing to count is as a negotiation "win" just to get Goodell out of the disciplinary process in the next CBA. Something very easy for the owners to "give up" in negotiations..... and ask for the players giving up something in return.

Goodell.has botched a lot of things, but he does 2 things well that the owners love him for it. He makes them lots of money and he takes all the heat.

Maybe he should stop employing guys who beat their women while also threatening to cut players who peacefully "protest" and we'll have less of that to talk about.

I was listening to a Twin cities podcast from KFAN.  The morning show was talking to Ben Leber who is now a sideline reporter for the Vikings.  He went on a rant about Goodell and his demands and I agree with him.  The private jet demand upset him somewhat because if Goodell is going to make $50 mil per year, he should be able to hire a jet whenever, but the biggest thing was Goodell wanting insurance for life for his family.  He said that it was a slap in the face to current and former players who put their bodies on the line for the game have to get their own insurance and some (especially those who played way back when salaries aren't what they are now) could not afford good insurance and Goodell should be able to afford the best insurance out there.

I can't believe the NFL is so dumb. Sit down and talk with your most powerful team owner. Now sending letters to the guy saying his conduct is detrimental to the league? Insane. How about sending Goodell a letter about how much he's damaged the league.  This league deserves to crumble, and it will eventually.

Cracking down on cheating and criminal behavior is damaging to the league?   Also, Jerry Jones can pound sand.  This isn't elementary school. He's wants to bully Goodell now because the low-character player he gambled on got suspended. Thank God the league has a commissioner who can't be bullied.

Imagine a fantasy football league where the rules on certain topics are vague or nonexistent. And rather than clarify and re-write the rules, the Commissioner decides to arbitrarily enforce them. And a couple teams get kicked out, and then a couple other people quit in protest, and then all the other owners start arguing and bickering with each other. You think that would remain a fun league to play in?

Listen, Goodell sucks for many reasons but he's completely stuck on these domestic violence issues. Unless you want to rely entirely on law enforcement findings, in which case you then have to worry about these women refusing to comply with ongoing investigations once they realize their men, and they by extension, are going to lose out monetarily, it has to be arbitrarily enforced.

I always knew my commish was somehow related to Roger Goodell.

The NFL is not the only professional sports league with players who have domestic violence issues. But every other league has found a way to address it without allowing it to drag out in the media. Goodell isn't just being arbitrary. He's attempting to use his position to make examples of the players -- partly because he thinks it will serve as a deterrent for other players, and partly because he thinks it will improve the image of the league and expand the fan demographics. But I think it's failing on both levels. Players are not deterred, and the fanbase is not expanding.

The NFL is not a 1950s finishing school. It's not Roger Goodell's job to teach men how to be men. He's acting like prison warden when he needs to be acting more like a CEO.

It's obvious that Jones is behind the leak that revealed Goodell's demands for a private jet and healthcare for his family.

And it's obvious that Goodell is behind the leak of Jones making a racially-insensitive joke in 2013.

Will the players draw a hard line in the sand with the next CBA concerning the commissioners power to discipline? I think some of Rogers momentum with the owners apart from the TV ratings prior to 2016 was he won on the CBA negotiation. But I not so sure he will win next time around. I think the ratings will stay down beyond the anthem protest and he will have to relinquish some power in the next CBA.

The owners would be fools  to guarantee him $50 million. The base should be lowered and incentives worked in.

That seems true, though the support of him still doesn't make sense to me.

Sure they've been bending over networks and players in pretty much every negotiation, though I'm not sure how much credit Goodell deserves for that or what would've happened with another commissioner. Apparently the owners think he was vital in that. Though, it's hard to imagine the next wave of TV deals being so lucrative with Networks losing so much money right now on those deals.

Maybe Goodell has made them a lot of money in the past, but this new deal is about going forward and I don't think Goodell has the League in a good spot looking toward the future.

Maybe it's foolish of me to think, but shouldn't the NFL be striving to get to a point where they don't need to pay a guy $50 mill/yr to "take all the heat"? I mean, a huge money making machine like the NFL is going to have PR problems, of course, but at some point, wouldn't it be good for the League if folks, you know, liked them? I know people obviously consume NFL football even though they complain about pretty much everything and everyone involved. It's never going to be pretty for a League that makes loads of money by beating up it's employees and sponsors in negotiations, but some goodwill at some point seems like it would be helpful.

Also, my guess is there might be a much simpler explanation of the owners' support for Goodell.......he must know where a lot of bodies are buried.

Philly is crushing Dallas tonight.

It's going to be awesome watching Jerry Jones triple down on his attacks tomorrow against Goodell for having the audacity to suspend one of Jones's players and clearly cost him a Super Bowl.

Cowboys 5-5, he's got to deal with fat jackass Christie in the suite, all that's left is Goodell getting his massive extension and raise. Make it so.

And now the Chargers spank the Boys on Thanksgiving.

You just know that Mt. St. Jones is quickly building up to an unsustainable pressure.
