Rolando McClain (1 Viewer)

Just traded for him in my dynasty and I'm wondering what I can expect from him this year and in the future.
I see McClain following a very similar career path as Curtis Lofton's. Struggled some/often his rookie year, and then BOOM, the lights went on. Everybody is going to want to be there for when the lights go on for McClain. And I think that has already happened. But people won't go nuts over the guy until he starts the season something like this: 7 solos week 1, 8 solos and sack week 2, etc. Too late then...I'm trying hard to get him in one of my keeper leagues as we speak.

McClain's career is not similar to Lofton's. Lofton did not play in any subpackages his rookie season (he was drafted to replace Brooking the following season). Lofton played very well his rookie year, and expectedly became a stud in year two when he played every down. There was no proverbial light that went on.

McClain was drafted to be "the man" in the middle from day one. However, he played very tentative and did not show the insticts that he did in college. These are not good traits for a MLB who is already not fast enough to play sideline to sideline. His instincts did seem to improve toward the end of the year, and as a McClain owner, I do think he has a shot at a top 20 finish. But, if you are expecting a Lofton-esque increase in numbers, you are going to be very disappointed.

I only watched a few minutes of last nights game, but from what I saw McClain did not look good. He looked slow and missed a couple easy opportunities. Even though Denver did not run much, McClain should have racked up at least a couple garbage solo tackles. Anyone watch the entire game and have a different opinion?

That's what I saw. I think they were in his head and he was frustrated. He threw a late shot (push to the upper shoulder pads) to some OL after the whistle once.

I will say he looked GREAT in pass coverage for the first couple quarters (all I watched before I went to bed). I saw him tip at least 3 passes away, so if your scoring gives points for Passes defensed for LBs, that should be a nice little boost for him.

After looking at his scoring, apparently they only gave him credit for 1? I was watching the game, and he literally tipped at least 3 that I saw, so not sure what to make of that...

He was an every down MIKE but he just looked slow. Maybe it was the rain that made the field slippery but he looked like his agility was lacking. Besides the couple PDs, he looked somewhat goofy to me.

This was my thought was well. There were a few times early on where he looked all set to make the play, but he misfired or overpursued. Was not impressed at all with what I saw of him in the first quarter or so.

:tumbleweed:

Like many last year I was all in on McClain. Drafted him in the 1st round of our rookie draft and expected he'd be a plug and play LB1 for years to come. My expectation was somewhere between a DeMeco Ryans ceiling and Curtis Lofton floor.

So much for that... and last night did nothing to change my opinion. I cut bait just before our trade deadline last season, getting a 2nd round pick this year in return (thankfully).

Jene used to have a quote in his sig something to the effect: 'sometimes it's hard to tell where patience ends and insanity begins.' At least for me I've seen all I need to see to know where I stand on McClain today.

Agree, he had 2 terrible mistackles (1 hilarious against Moreno)

Insanity has begun for me. I had some good offers in the off season for RM... should have cut ties when I had the chance.

In 25 years of playing IDP fantasy football...

I have never seen a 4-3 MLB (with talent no less) start for so long and get such pathetic tackle numbers game after game, as does Rolando.

He lost 3 tackles to penalties and poz didn't do much either. With Denver giving up on the run it doesn't matter your numbers go down he played a lot of zone

Watched the game as well and came away completely unimpressed. I don't know if he is really that slow or not putting out the effort -- or both. Not only was he a joke in run support, but he got tied up at the LOS every time he blitzed. As an owner, I had hoped the light bulb came on during the last half of the 2010 season. If last night is any indication of future performance, it's time to cut bait.

Give him 1 more chance like I said I watched the whole game and the only time he didn't drop back was on a blitz. He couldn't get any tackles on the run because the dline had Moreno or mgahee all ready down horrible oline hurt him this week bit he gets 1 more shot I blame coaching on this one.

McClain didn't look as bad as the box score indicated. The most solos on the team were 5 and the running game for the Broncos was so poor that seldom did the running backs even get to the 2nd level.

I watched this entire game with a lot of interest. I was a half a point down going into the last game. Only player left to play was McClain (on my team) It was painful to watch him play. Especially with a few tackles being wiped out with penalties.

What I noticed most of all was the lack of intensity and pursuit from McClain. On a lot of plays he would pull up when a teammate was trying to get a person to the ground. It almost looked like he was afraid of contact?

FYI, in my league he was only credited with one pass defense, and one assist. I won my game by .12 points. McClain ranked as the 128 best LB for he week.

I too passed on trade offers this off season, I was hoping McClain could be a fixture for me at LB.

UPDATE: An hour after this post I was able to work a multiplayer deal that involved McClain for Tulloch.

Play him when it's against a run or short pass team not against a sandiego new Orleans Denver or green bay type. I am in a dynasty league gonna invest in him he is a ball hawk I noticed he gives up when he knows the play is dead that upsets some but it also saves him energy and stupid penalties

McClain did have a better game than last week. It still doesn't change the fact that he is inconsistent. All too often we hear about WR's taking plays off. This is similar. I think McClain's lack of urgency will cost him additional tackles or perhaps a fumble recovery. No doubt, he will have some great games. The difference between a good player and a great player often comes down to desire. He doesn't have that desire for the full 60 minutes.

This friggin guy screwed me big time this week. Would have been nice to get some news that he a) wasn't starting, or b) would only be used in emergency. Thanks for the zero ya ##### bag.

Thanks SlevinKelevra! I am sitting him tonight.
 SK. Just in time to pull him. Again.

:goodposting:

He is making the easy plays, but is super tentative and not really "getting in there" if he doesnt have to.
