The strategy of hoarding picks seemed to work pretty well for me for 10 seasons. It took a couple years for it to get off the ground. I got lucky with Portis at the beginning but I had like 4 out of 5 top picks in that draft so busts were there too. I just had enough picks to hit on some guys also. For me the main value of trading for future draft picks is to improve the overall talent of your roster. I see draft picks as the invisible part of your overall roster value beyond your roster limits. Sometimes I have done trades just to free roster space to pick up free agents. Acquiring rookie depth leads to trades later on as well when owners come after your youthful potential. Having the extra picks also gives you ammunition for being able to move around in the draft and selectively target the players you want, as well as being able to control the flow of the draft to some degree which allows you to let players fall to you with later picks (more value). If the value isn't there when your picks come up then trading for future draft picks is a way to roll that value into future years, increase your total roster space value and maximize your picks value.Of course it isn't easy and takes a lot of communication with other owners to make it work. After effectively doing this for a decade I could no longer get a fair deal from anyone (with good reason lol) but it was fun while it lasted.I have a league where one guy consistantly hoards rediculous amounts of picks. That strategy has never panned out considering he does the same thing every year.
I feel like the owners who do this are the ones that prefer looking at their roster, to winning games. They draft players, then trade them for more picks before they reach their prime. This leaves them with a team full of young "high potential" players. Then they stay out of the playoffs forever, because they never have players in their prime.
How the hell did he get that many picks to begin with? I think you'll find that you did very well for yourself with that trade. If you can get THAT many picks than it is an excellent strategy, he gave up way too much IMO. I know in my league though people are very stingy about trading their picks.Ask me in a couple of years if it's a viable strategy.I gave up:Murray, DeMarco DAL RBMcCoy, LeSean PHI RBFlynn, Matt GBP QBBritt, Kenny TEN WRYear 2012 Round 2 Draft PickI got:Year 2012 Round 1 Draft Pick 1.01Year 2012 Round 1 Draft Pick 1.02Year 2012 Round 1 Draft Pick 1.04Year 2012 Round 1 Draft Pick 1.08Year 2012 Round 1 Draft Pick 1.15Locker, Jake TEN QBWatt, J.J. That trade is beyond awful for the guy giving up the picks. I mean 1.01, 1.02 and 1.04 would be Richardson, Blackmon and Luck or Griffin. In my opinionRichardson, Blackmon, Luck/Griffin is basically fair value for McCoy, Britt, Flynn. Which basically means he gave Demarco Murray for 5 1st rounders, Locker and Watt....just wow, he collected all those picks and pretty much wasted themHow the hell did he get that many picks to begin with? It was three different trades. I consolidated for simplicity's sake. me to. i have not had a 1st round pick in 5 or 6 years.Im a pick mover. I routinely trade my picks for more vet established type players. The one rebuild I had, the league died so I never got to see how it ended.
would love to see this team in 2 yrsLast year 1 team traded away all their players to land 8 1st, 8 2nd, 9 3rd and 6 4th round picks in this year's draft.1.01 1. Puerto Rico 1.03 3. I've failed on a rebuild once before but I think this one is coming along. The mistake I made the 1st time was I used all the picks I had in the same draft and most of the players I took didn't work out. This time I moved a my players around last yr and got a bunch of picks for this yr and next yr. Also grab a couple of players who haven't quite broken out yet like CJ Spiller.Ended 2010My 16 teamer / 46 man (PPR & IDP) league started up in 2008. In the 1st 3 yrs I made the playoffs 2 times and just missed the other time; also during the 2009 & 2010 seasons I only made 1 draft pick(Sanchez).
I drafted an older team in the start up and always sold my future picks for proven players

Even though I had success in the regular season I lost in the 1st round of the playoffs and knew that time was running out for the team, so last yr I whole selled the team for a bunch of picks for 2011 / 2012 / 2013. I documented just about every trade I made in the AC forum last yr, and at the time no one liked what I was doing.

I ended 2010 with no 1st rounder for 2011 but ended up with AJ Green / Dan Thomas / Vereen & Ridley / Cruz and a bunch of others
I continually trade just about every pick I have, as well as any that I acquire, except a first I think will be high. If I could move the 8th pick in every round for 1.03 or so each year, I would.me to. i have not had a 1st round pick in 5 or 6 years.Im a pick mover.
