so those hoping for Homes/LJ type numbers out of Portis in this offense may be disappointed now
Anyone thinking that Portis would get "holmes/LJ numbers" because of Al Saunders is crazy, since Saunders will not be a Redskin coach after Janaury 1, 2007, IMHO. Gibbs takes back the offense for next season or brings in someone to run it his way.

This is becoming more and more of a possibility IMHO. Saunders is a bright guy but from his play-calling you'd think he was more enamored of being creative than of winning. All one needs to do to see what his play-book
could do with someone else calling is to look at the Chiefs this year with someone else calling the plays out of Saunders' play-book - they're winning!
I think Saunders stays on as OC, he's a Gibbs guy, coached with Don Coryell back in the day, as did Gibbs..the problem with Washington is they waited too long to start Campbell , and they didn't address the QB position in the offseason.
Drew Brees should have been on their radar screens, what with an aging, oft-injured Brunell starting them in the face..they should have seen this season coming..poor QB play has killed them, and their schedule wasn't the easiest, either ( if I remember correctly, it was a tough SOS).
Portis' pre-season injury hurt them badly, too..they really didn't have a plan B, didn't know what they had in Betts at that time..
Betts is more the prototypical RB that Saunders has coached in the past: Priest, LJ, i.e., bigger , heavier RB's with good hands..
( I know LJ doesn't catch nearly as well as Priest Holmes but both are bigger backs) . Betts is a great combination of size and speed and has terrific hands..Portis is on the smaller side, which tends to leave him nicked up from repeated poundings..its obvious Sauders wants to bash the same RB at opposing defenses 25+ times.
Portis has taken an awful lot of carries in Washington, andyou wonder if they're beginning to think they've worn him down a bit..I'm sure Washington will get back on trace in 2007, but they're going to need to get healthy ( Moss, fotr starters) and they need better play out of the QB position.
Al Saunders' offenses in KC ranked what, #1 in scoring for the 5 years he coached there, and #1 in rushing all 5 years as well? ( don't have the info in front of me, but I remember seeing these stats before, regarding Saunders in KC)..he's a HECK of a good OC..
Kc's problem was always that they lacked any sort of defense at all..
the were ALWAYS dynamic on offense...
