RUMOR: Tom Brady and BALCO (1 Viewer)

Tom Servo

Nittany Beavers
While driving into work this morning and listening to ESPN's All Night with Jason Smith, he brought up an item about Greg Anderson possibly not testifying again in the front of the new BALCO grand jury. IIRC, in the midst of talking to Greg Anderson, he brought up Tom Brady's name. It was brought up in this context: We spoke on the phone once and never spoke again.

It was speculated by Jason Smith that, however peripherally Brady's tied to the BALCO matter, it could explain why he missed some practices earlier in camp. A quick google search turned up this chat and the matter of TB missing some TC:

August 1st Patriots chat

duende What's up with Tom Brady? Any speculation as to why he missed so many practices?

Jerome_Solomon There is certainly speculation: his arm is sore, he was just given a day off because he is a veteran, or he is upset that he's wasting his time throwing to below average receivers.
Please understand I'm not trying to start anything. I'm only reporting an unconfirmed, unsourced story I heard this morning. I hope he's not involved at all. As information.

Only relation I can see is that Brady is from San Mateo, about 10 miles down the road from BALCO HQ.

Time to brace for the storm that will result if these allegations are not investigated with the same gusto that Bonds has been investigated with. The truth will become an afterthought then.

I think Brady also talked to George Bush after they won the Superbowl. This thing could reach the highest level of government!

Somebody talked to somebody once, and all of a sudden we've got a major case?

Please.

Really...I talk to myself all the time -- it doesn't make me crazy...

This is the first I have heard about this. I have to believe if there was an ounce of truth to it it would already be huge news locally. Especially since Ron Borges of the Globe is a Patriot-hater who has strong ties to the bay area (he used to cover the Raiders and has incredible manlove for Al Davis). He was embarrased when the whole Brady/Bledsoe thing (he was an arrogant dbag as usual but was 100% offbase) went down and I'm sure if he could he would definetly take a swipe here.

Getting mixed up with BALCO is one thing...but speaking with George Bush is inexcusable!

This is such a non-story it's unbelievable.I played in the same little league as former Braves pitcher Buzz Capra. another non-story.
I once made Cedric Benson cry in 6th grade football with a bone-jarring tackle. Headline news.Oh, and Colin Dowling thinks Troy Fleming.

I once called Culpepper an overrated QB while passing some unbelievable gas. No wonder he sucked last year.

Keep this one bumped

Brady linked to BALCO

Trainer, Pats QB spoke

BY TERI THOMPSON

DAILY NEWS SPORTS WRITER

For the most part, the NFL has avoided the intense scrutiny that has plagued Major League Baseball in the BALCO steroid era. But those days may be nearing an end. One of the NFL's biggest names - New England quarterback Tom Brady - has peripherally emerged in the BALCO investigation.

Federal prosecutors today will try to convince a judge to throw Barry Bonds' personal trainer back in jail for refusing to testify, this time before a newly assembled grand jury that is reportedly also investigating track coach Trevor Graham and other athletes. In a statement to prosecutors about his intentions to keep quiet, Bonds' trainer, Greg Anderson, invoked Brady's name, effectively dragging the three-time Super Bowl winner into the biggest steroid scandal in U.S. sports history, saying the two had spoken over the phone but never made further contact.

Several NFL players have emerged in the BALCO investigation, along with numerous baseball players, but none with the star power of Brady. Even if Brady is only remotely tied to Anderson and BALCO, he could find himself subject to the questions of the government, as have numerous other athletes. Brady was mysteriously absent for several days near the start of training camp. No reason was given for his absence.

"I had only one brief conversation with Tom Brady regarding a potential future workout," Anderson said in the statement to prosecutors that was included in court documents unsealed in San Francisco yesterday. "I never had another phone conversation with him and never discussed it with anyone."

Paula Canny, an Anderson attorney, said Brady's name appears along with "10 to 20" other athletes that Anderson's grand jury subpoena lists as people the trainer should be prepared to answer questions about. Canny said investigators may have gotten Brady's name from Anderson phone records seized by the government, though Anderson doesn't refer to any other athletes in his brief statement.

Brady attended the same Bay Area high school as Bonds. His agent, Donald Yee, couldn't be reached for comment, and the Patriots declined comment on Anderson's statement. "I don't have any information on it," Patriots spokesman Stacey James said. "I'm not going on hearsay."

Anderson has refused on four different occasions to testify before federal grand juries investigating Bonds. He was released from prison on July 20 after serving 15 days for refusing to testify, but only after that grand jury's term expired. "I will not ever make statements about other people," Anderson said in the June 23 statement filed with the court. "That has always been my position and will continue to be."

Prosecutors plan to ask U.S. District Judge William Alsup today to send Anderson to prison if he stands by that policy.

Government lawyers are investigating whether Bonds lied under oath when he told an earlier grand jury he didn't know whether the substances given to him by Anderson were steroids. The grand jury probe also reportedly is focused on whether the Giants' slugger paid taxes on the sale of hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of sports memorabilia.

The grand jury is also reportedly looking into the possible involvement of Graham, the track coach of Marion Jones and Justin Gatlin, who tested positive earlier this year for elevated testosterone levels.

Anderson previously served three months in prison after pleading guilty to steroid distribution and money laundering stemming from the government's investigation of BALCO, which allegedly supplied Bonds and other elite athletes with performance-enhancing drugs.

LMAO

There's no way this wave hits the NFL like it has beisbol, there wouldn't be any players left.

After his 1st season in the NFL a skinny Tom Brady was on the verge of being released by the Pats.

During that 1st off-season, he put on 25+ lbs of muscle. (a fact that by itself has made certain baseball players suspects in the public eye).

There is a phone record of Tom Brady talking to Greg Anderson.

He's not guilty, but the Door is Open.

You can get steroids over the phone?

Anyone seen Brady's chest? It's practically concave. And I love how the article has in HUGE type "BRADY LINKED TO BALCO." Hilarious.

*He was skinny.*It's an absolute fabrication that he was on the verge of being released.*He has put on a lot of weight. He's also known as the hardest worker on the Patriot team. He's a definite workout warrior. *In this day and age nothing would surprise me. Even something as seemingly farfetched as this so yes, a door is always open. Yet, the trend of throwing darts at a public figure without any specifics is getting ridiculous. It puts people in a guilty perception with the public and once that happens a reputation has been tarnished and the hordes move on to their next target and the victim is left standing wondering what just happened.

They raided Balco what, 3 years ago? They had multiple gatherings of the grand jury in that case, and there have been news leaks everywhere about who has testified and even what they testified about.

This is the first mention of Brady? Now? If there was something to this story, we'd have heard about it long before this.

:fishing: This is an extra stinky one.
 Sorry, even I, :towelwave: :homer: that I am, don't believe in :fishing: I merely reported what I heard, using words like "IIRC", "speculate", and most importantly, "RUMOR". Believe me, if I was fishing, I wouldn't have made the original post like I did. ETA: I sincerely hope he's not involved in any way.

It explains why he gained all that arm strength. Pats=tainted. :D

Everyone in the NFL is taking something. The PR machine they have is top-notch. Nothing will come of this, even if someone can prove 100% of NFL is on steroids/HGH.

I have been seeing Bridget Moynihan on the sly for weeks now. She said Tom had marbles like chick peas, and couldn't get it up.

The facts are undeniable, people.

Kind of humorous given when Bush discussed steroids in the State of the Union address a few years ago, the cameras immediately panned to Brady. :)

Phone Rings...

TB: "Hello, this is Tom."

GA: "Hi, this is Greg Anderson..."

TB: "WHY ARE YOU CALLING ME? WHAT DO YOU WANT?"

GA: "I was calling for Tara Reid's phone number"

TB: "Oh..."

So you have been alone with the hottie, Bridget Moynihan , and you spend your time talking about Tom Brady's junk....?? :X

You mean as opposed to panning to all of the other athletes attending the State of the Union address?

He was told that if he wanted to "stay in the NFL" that he needed to get stronger. He did get stronger. It is not a fabrication at all to suggest that if he remained "weak" (i.e., his year 1 physique) he may never of elevated himself within Belichek's system to be the #2 QB and may have toiled in medicrority. He needed to get stronger. He did and became great.Workout Warrior? So what, so was McGwire, Romo, Bonds.I didn't say that he was guilty, I just said that the door was no open. One needs to look at the %'s. Well in excess of 50% of modern athletes that have been rumored to use steroids have been steroid users (at least as judged in the court of public opinion that deems guys like Sosa, McGwire as guilty). Yes, this indicts a few truly innocent folks, but not usually. The NFL has gotten a free pass on PED's because their fans really don't care -- there is no sacrosanct equivalent of a 61/714 HR threshold.

It's just amusing because, of the 22 guys on the field, Brady is probably smaller than 18 of them. Perhaps he was just taking them incorrectly. "You gotta use the whole fist, doc?"
