Russell signs (1 Viewer)

So he gets $31 million guaranteed and doesn't have to do anything for a year. Sounds like a good deal to me.

oh well he won't play this year anyways
Don't be so sure about that.My guess is as soon as they are mathematically eliminated from playoff contention, we will see Russell. They need him to be ready to start next season and any playing time he can get now will help that development. This assumes the OLine can continue to show the improvement it has thus far. If they fall apart they may hold him back for his own protection.

Raiders, Russell agree in principle to deal

Sources say team will pay the No. 1 pick $31 million guaranteed

ALAMEDA — The Raiders have agreed to pay No. 1 draft pick JaMarcus Russell at least $31 million guaranteed after lengthy negotiations with the quarterback's agents the past four days, according to two people familiar with the situation.

Reaching that figure clears the way for Russell's signing a contract at any time, perhaps as soon as today. Raiders coach Lane Kiffin confirmed as much.

"It just continues to sound like they are getting closer and closer," Kiffin said at his weekly news conference Monday. "It could be (Monday). You just never know. I know that the sides are as close as they've ever been."

The proposed deal is expected to be for six years and make it possible for Russell to earn as much as $60 million over the life of the contract.

The two sides have haggled over several issues since the Raiders selected Russell with the first pick of the NFL draft April 28. He attended offseason workouts and all three of the team's minicamps but missed all of training camp, Oakland's four exhibition games and its regular-season opener Sunday.

Russell's primary agent, Eric Metz, and Raiders officials met Friday to see if they could end the stalemate. A breakthrough occurred once Metz and the Raiders worked out the parameters for Russell to receive $31 million guaranteed. Assuming there isn't a breakdown in the final stages of the process, it's possible Russell could join his teammates when they return to practice Wednesday.

Kiffin said he

isn't ruling out the possibility of Russell's being signed and with the Raiders before Sunday's game against he Denver Broncos.

"I wouldn't say I expect that, but I definitely wouldn't be surprised," Kiffin said.

The Raiders likely would receive a two-week roster exemption once Russell signs. Therefore, they wouldn't have to make a move on their 53-man active roster until the exemption is lifted. At that point, Kiffin would be forced to decide if he wants to carry four quarterbacks or jettison one of the three on the active roster — Josh McCown, Daunte Culpepper and Andrew Walter.

Is this the official thread where all the raider fans saying oak shouldn't give Russell his $ come in and now say they are glad they gave him his $? Aren't those guaranteed $'s the exact $'s that would have got Russell signed back in April? So the raiders just through away an entire summer/camp/preseason of development for their next franchise qb?

Wow. A home loss to the Lions starts years before the actual game..... and oak has worked themselves up to where they are right now.

I tend to agree. A lot depends on how McCown does over the next few weeks. If Russell is physically ready, there's still no reason we won't see him later in the season - obviously he's the franchise QB and they're not going to risk his safety, but it could be worthwhile to get him snaps late in the season if and when they're out of it.

I'm thinking that they've been offered more in trade for 'Pepper than McCown (hence Josh starting since he'll stay) and Walter stays on the roster. I'm thinking it's mostly a $ move. Once Russel is signed, I'm expectin to hear about offers by Thurs/Fri. No inside sources or anything, just seems like Davis has been more interested in $ than football in recent years.

Rumor is McCown has a broken finger and thus Culpepper is starting this week for sure. Kiffin is playing games again and won't make it public trying to catch the Broncos off guard.

FWIW.

Not doubting that Kiffin may be playing games, but here's the latest news there:
