Ryan Mallett: Substance Abuse Problems? (1 Viewer)

Character Concern: Ryan Mallett

Ryan Mallett

We’ve all seen the jaw dropping throws, and the ridiculous numbers Ryan Mallett has put up the past couple of years at Arkansas under Bobby Petrino. Now sources inside the Arkansas program are shedding some light on the rumors that Mallett has substance abuse problems.

NFL Draft Monsters has a policy of not publishing a story without two independant confirmations. We were approached this week, by a source inside the Arkansas program who told us the he has personally witnessed Mallett use both marijuana, and cocaine. This corroborates an account given to us a few months back, that we had been unable to substantiate.

Both sources spoke on the condition of anonymity, and NFL Draft Monsters has a policy of not compensating sources in any way for stories.

An email sent to the University of Arkansas requesting comment has not been returned at this time.

We will bring you more as this story develops.

Albert Breer (an excellent media-guy in this area) was talking about Mallett a few weeks ago on the radio...he was absolutely destroying him saying he was the next Ryan Leaf...said he was pretty much un-coachable...he predicted as the draft got closer and more info was learned about his attitude his stock would begin to drop...he never mentioned the drug issue but he was very adamant that this kid was a bad apple.

Admittedly I don't pay attention to this kind of thing until draft prep rolls around, but this is the first I've heard of the kid having character issues. Can any Arkansas fans or SEC folks shed light on whether this kind of thing has been rumored in the past?

I've heard stories about Mallet doing coke for years now. If he had no character concerns, he'd be a top 5 pick in every mock. As it stands, once this guy gets in the NFL and has milllions in his bank acct: Lookout!

I don't know anything about his alleged drug use, but I have been flagging the character concerns on him for a while. He was extremely close to getting booted off the team at Michigan by Lloyd Carr. The common perception is that Rich Rodriguez ran Mallett out of town, but the issues were brewing for a long time. There was one incident where he was literally screaming at Carr on the sideline like a maniac when corrected him on something. His teammates, coaches, fellow students, anyone who spent time around him for the most part hated him. As I said in other threads, all of this occured while he was an 18 year old freshman, and there is a good chance he has done a lot of maturing since then. That being said, I prefer QB's to not have those type of marks on their resume. It is why I compare him to Leaf. The physical characteristics are similar, but it really the mental makeup and short temper that remind me of Leaf. I would be SHOCKED if he ends up with a succesful pro career.

Well the last time the Dolphins drafted a QB who fell because of Coke rumors he was a big, strong armed, stand in the pocket type QB and it worked out pretty well...maybe we'll have a repeat of 1983. I can't comment on his off the field or work habit suff but on the field I like him better then projects like Newton.

Draft Monsters is just trying to make a name for themselves here. Unless they are willing to come forward with the names to the sources they should not run with a story like this.

Why not? It seems they're now a known company thanks to this rumor.
Because it's not professional. Nobody in the draft community knows who these guys are yet they run with a huge story like this?
It depends what they were/are trying to accomplish. Everyone sure knows who they are now...if this story has no legs they'll die soon. If it has any truth, they've just made one helluva splash into the 'draft community'.

Pretty sweet mock draft on "Draft Monsters". They still have Andrew Luck in the top spot.

Marino was rumored to do coke coming out of college.

Does this surprise ANYONE?
 a college student who takes drugs recreationally? Oh the humanity! :confused:I mean Warren Sapp, Randy Moss, Lawrence Taylor, michael vick, jamaal anderson (rb), Marion, Jimmy smith (wr)....None of these guys were that good anyway. I'm glad my team didn't draft any of them. :goodposting:Of course if the guy put away a case of beer in a sitting (like 80% of the UM football players I ever partied with) it'd be a non-story.laughable.

as tired and hurt as these guys are, doesn't bother me a bit.Plus fwiw most of the UM football players (of which there were MANY-- but I won't name names-- unlike this arkansas 'booster'/sour graper-- would use coke, ether (inhalants) or acid (and booze obviously) since they were afraid of testing + [as these don't hit drug tests-- save coke which stays in your system 2-4 days) even though weed was decriminalized in ann arbor.sad that they had to do that to catch a buzz  , but don't hate the player, hate the NCAA/gov'ts asinine WOD..

that wasn't a rumor. I know folks (my parents friends were BIG Miami Boosters-- like ride on the plane kind) who could confirm this. Obviously won't attach any names as they were/are lawyers.Coacaine is and always will be a drug of choice for those with gobs of money (as they are usually tired from working their tails off).Lines out dan!I mean have u ever been to Miami?

What? Cocaine is very common, almost as much as weed IMO...at least at Stanford East down here.
exactly. I imagine I'd be more concerned about chronic chronic use, as it might cause a young kid to ignore the playbook and play video games a la #7.

Yes, people may know of them now - but respected is another story. why is it that every other year some draft site nobody cares about does something like this? They are 'reporting' something that has been rumored for years now.

Born here, live here now, go to UM...yeah I've seen the city a few times

Interesting. I wasn't aware it's been rumored for awhile. I don't think this is a big deal by itself, but when there were/are reports of his character being an issue it adds another small red flag.

Check it out everyone - NFLDRAFTMONSTER is observing this thread. Care to shed some light on those sources?

Really? Hardly anyone in the media names their sources today. I've never heard Glazer, Schefter, etc. ever actually reveal the name(s) of any of their sources. And for good reason. Once you out a source, you aren't going to be able to use them again.

ETA: From the article: "Both sources spoke on the condition of anonymity, and NFL Draft Monsters has a policy of not compensating sources in any way for stories."

I don't know anything personally about Mallett, but it has always bothered me that he has a hot temper. He regularly flails his arms and kicks like a girl when sacked or knocked down by defenders. Just doesn't seem like a guy that you would willingly follow. Not good leadership qualities.

:football:They've got 2 different sources, confirming their report. Isnt' that Journalism 101? Most of the sports media today will release reports with only 1 source. Do you also think that ESPN is unprofessional? Because not only do they routinely report stuff with just 1 source, but they're also notorious for stealing other people's stories, not giving them the proper credit, and passing it off as their own reporting,

Why send an email to Arkansas? Why not contact his agent? That's top of the list of things 'd have done. Not contacting the player for their take always rubs me wrong, no matter who.

Better be sure on these things or at least give them a chance to answer your charge.

FWIW Florio got hammered when he wrote a character assassination of McShay last year with 'sources within the scouting community'

When you light someone up like this, better be ready to back it up. But anyone can have 'sources' - my kid's hamster is a source if I want him to be.

Is this the journalistic ethical standard when doing a report like this? (Seriously, I don't know.)

Once upon a time, yes 100%. These days in the wild wild Interwest? Hard to say. It should be, IMO. It isn't always now - the rush to be first sometimes blows past quotes, secondary sources and rebuttals. For myself I think giving the person who you are accusing of at least no commenting or telling their side of the story is the right thing to do. I don't know this guys source (maybe I do, but I don't know who they are) so I have no idea what motivations, intentions or anything else he/she/they might have. I think it's only right to allow the accused a moment to respond. This is a huge and very damaging allegation - not just for his draft stock (which could cost him millions) but personally - if people believe what is said, this is personally damaging to Mallet. That's serious and in my mind, worthy of a phone call to someone other then his school (unless the email was 'hey how do we get a quote from mallett?).Again, once upon a time, it wouldn't even have been a question. Now.... as you pointed out, even ESPN blows off simple journalistic practices.I don't know the site has an agenda, they may be 100% of their sources. I can't speak to them, I don't know them. Might be 100%, 100% false, they may have been lied to, they may have seen it. All I can speak to is my experience and I have - up close - seen similar actions and it bothered me then, as it does now.

The reason I didn't respond to this thread earlier is quite simply that I couldn't. My account had yet to be validated by an administrator.

I can tell you that both of my sources are legit, and that I wouldn't have committed libel and attached my name to it, if they hadn't told me what they did.

As of right now it is simply their word.

As for why I did what I did with the emails, I don't have Mallett or his agent's number, so I simply emailed the University of Arkansas figuring that'd be the best way to get a hold of all parties concerned.

 Welcome aboard. I'm sure many of us will keep an eye on your work moving forward. And update your mock to remove Luck!

That mock draft was published over a month ago, and we aren't planning on publishing a new one until after the senior bowl.

With the advent of the internet sports reporting lost its professionalism and ethics. Nearly every sports reporter has a long list of errorneous reports. I cannot condem Draft Monsters for this article.

My question to Mr Lammey is why exactly is it not professional? You seem to be implying that because no one knows who I am, I shouldn't have broke the story, which is asinine.

The Rhett Bhomar scandal was broken by a message board poster relaying a story he's heard from his girlfriends friend... an inquisitive reporter followed up on it, and wala!

I have several sources on my Mallett article, but two of them had the exact same story (with details) independent of each other. I've been holding on to this for awhile, and in a sense it sickened me to publish this story as I am actually an Arkansas fan.

Wow. Using anonymous sources is both unprofessional and new? I guess Deepthroat really was just a movie title.Comeon guys. Do we think they just picked a name out of a hat to get some google hits? They're doing this, knowing that being wrong could finish them before they even get started, merely as a ploy to drum up name recognition? It'd be great to have your name associated with a baseless, false rumor as a first impression. You've just had someone in this thread say that they've been hearing about the Mallet+cocaine connection for some time. Yet we're going to turn up our noses up on someone that may have just scooped every major sports news outlet. Why? Because they aren't "established" or they lack the right "credentials". FBG's has really come a long way, hasn't it. Far enough to forget what it was like to be an outsider trying to be an up-and-comer? I guess that's how you know you've made it. You can finally claim to be an insider, a somebody, and then take on an air of elitism when outsiders get attention. This revelation by Draft Monsters isn't going to affect Mallet's draft stock. Any NFL team interested in him is going to do their due diligence in running these rumors down. And I suspect that NFL people have enough connections to quietly find out what they want to know without needing Draft Monsters to give them the scoop. If Mallet slips further than his workouts and combine performances justify, it won't be because Draft Monsters outed his drug habit, it will be because teams did some digging and people much closer to Mallett than Draft Monsters confirmed there was some fire beneath that smoke.

You do know that Albert Breer was the first to toss cold water on Mallett declaring he was going pro right? He wrote that article close to 2 weeks ago and talked about him(Mallett) being arrested for public intoxication his 1st season of eligibility after transferring from Michigan. You're raising the bar a bit with the coacine charges but my question is why do you want to publish it? Why the need to print something that you weren't in the room witnessing 1st hand? Do you think NFL GMs are going to read what you print and suddenly not want to draft him? The Miami Dolphins asked Dez Bryant last year if his mother was a whore, do you honestly think they won't grill Mallett about his use "allegedly" of cocaine? They probably will ask him if he was getting serviced and smoking a cigar simultaneously while doing it. These GMs do their homework and then some. I hope you post some monster draft threads in here for all of us football and draftguys.

Dear Ministry of Pain,I'm not entirely sure what the point of your post is. Should people only post things if they were there to witness it firsthand? If so, that would prevent a LOT of stories from being broken. Surely you can't really mean that.Do you think they shouldn't post it because real life GM's won't care? What of the rest of us? Might this have an effect on whether you'll draft him in your fantasy leagues? Might it just be as simple as wanting to know what kind of issues a player your team might draft be dealing with? Next time, I think you should think things out before posting.Eternally yours,Dr. Awesome

This would not have happened had Mallett stayed at Michigan. These guy get bored out of their minds at Arkansas and start cooking dope.

I assume in the bolded you meant 'I wouldn't have risked committing libel'.... as for the agent thing - well I'll give you the benefit of the doubt but here's what I found googling Ryan Mallett Agent.

From NFLDraftscout

01/16/11 - Former Arkansas quarterback Ryan Mallett has chosen dual representation entering the NFL Draft. Agent David Dunn of Athletes First, a California-based firm, and attorney J.R. Carroll, who works for the Fayetteville office of national firm Kutak Rock LLP, will represent the quarterback. Mallett told ArkansasSports360.com that choosing two representatives was something he felt strongly about. “It was important to me to hire somebody from both the legal world and the agent world,” Mallett said. “I feel like that is the best way to protect myself and my family.” Mallett could have plenty to protect financially. He’s projected as a first-round pick in many early mock drafts. An early selection in the draft would be in line with other Athletes First clients. The California-based firm has a high-profile client list, including a number of notable quarterbacks. Mark Sanchez (New York Jets), Aaron Rodgers (Green Bay), Matt Hasselbeck (Seattle), Carson Palmer (Cincinnati) and Chad Henne (Miami), a former teammate of Mallett’s at Michigan, are on the list. - Chris Bahn, ArkansasSports360
I'm sure this would work too, at least to get his agent's number: Athlete Promotions

That took five minutes, most of which was cutting and pasting.

Again, my take is, before you publish something like this, you do the utmost to get some sort of response from the person you are accusing. That's just my .02. You'll get a no comment or a vehement denial of course, but IMO it's the right thing to do.

Hey, it might turn out to be right. The Cushing allegations from a few years ago appear to have had basis in fact though the Clay Matthews stuff had no legs. I'm not going to argue right or wrong about publishing it - that's for an individual to decide and it's different for every person and situation. I'm just saying, you're dealing with a guys rep both in AND outside of the sport - so take five minutes.

As for the poster saying this won't damage his draft stock - easily debatable but your main point was teams will do their due diligence regardless of any reports. Which is very true - whether something is reported by any site, blog, newspaper, franchises have to do their research. If there are rumors of this floating around, then they'll have heard them.

The other factor is reputation outside of sport which is hard to measure.
