Ever since The Manning family patriarch Archie tried to engineer who his son would play for (or not i.e. San Diego), I have wondered if players under perform in workouts because they want to play for a specific set of teams instead. Mallet knew he wasn't going to be first round anyway, so perhaps he had little desire to show well at Carolina or Tennessee and was looking for the right fit. Most observers feel New England was the perfect fit.

From Footballguys daily email:

New England Patriots QB Ryan Mallett was late to his scheduled April 18 pre-NFL Draft meeting with the Tennessee Titans, according to multiple sources. Mallett was late to his meeting with the Titans, though the actual amount of time is not certain. One source said Mallett was about 30 to 40 minutes late, while another indicated Mallett was more than an hour late on his arrival at the Titans' facility. Mallett apparently told the Titans that he was sick but also said he did not receive his wake-up call from the hotel, according to a source.

Mallett was late/sick for his visit with the Carolina Panthers too. On film there are several things to like about Mallet's game. He is big, has a strong arm, and has very good deep accuracy. However, it's his behavior off field and questionable leadership skills that caused him to fall to the third-round.

A head case, pure and simple, with known drug issues. And not just a little pot problem. Nice arm, but he's a tree in the pocket. I'm sure that the scouting report reflected that as well. Do you think he somehow tricked all 32 teams to pass on him at least twice by calling in sick? I heard an interview of him and he seems like he is anxious to prove himself. All good and well to have enthusiasm, but you wonder how he is going to cope, knowing that unless Brady gets hurt, he's going to have a 3 year wait like Aaron Rodgers.

Time will tell if it was the perfect spot for him to fall. I think he'd have been better served falling to a team that needed a QB to compete for the starter role. There were plenty of QB needy teams that passed on him, opting instead to wait on the FA QB class. Mallet for all we know may just got lost in the shuffle up in NE.

That makes little sense.

New England takes players that are outliers on their board. You can't compute the odds that a specific backup QB would be available in the 3rd round AND be the clear top of the board. On top of that, on what planet would a competitor like Mallett rather go to a team where he's ABSOLUTELY the backup, and the 3rd stringer for that matter, versus a chance to become the immediate (or near immediate) starter? That's potentially tens of millions of lost income over his career.

Good points, on that Mallet interview, he said as much that he was irked about losing that potential income dropping to the 3rd round. At least he agreed with the interviewers leading question about that.

I know, but it makes for good midnight conspiracy noodling. There were stories in the 70's (when big money had not hit yet a players still had regular other jobs) of players angling by looking lazy or slow at tryouts to get drafted by other teams.

There's no way this guy voluntarily took a zero off the end of his paycheck so he can play "with the right team".

I blame his agent on this situation too. Guy is sitting on a lottery ticket and he does not set his own alarm clock? Before this stuff all happened, Mallett was a top 15 pick...how do you, as an agent, not travel with player, and if you did, how do you not make sure he is on time for these interviews...and even if you can not control the kid and you are beating down his door to get him up, how do you not head the situation off with a proactive call to the team, versus waiting for the kid to be late and then coming up with an excuse. As a headhunter, I prep all my canddidates before their interviews and even call the ones the day of, who I may be a little worried about...and this is for pennies compared to the pay day Mallett would have received...kid was probably out drinking, etc. BUT, if he legitimately was sick, and this is how his agent handled it, I would fire the guy on the spot.

People here who are opposed to ending the draft argue that that's exactly what will happen. Players will ostensibly take less money to play with certain teams.

:goodposting:JaMarcus Russell got fat AFTER signing

we loved Mallett at Arkansas, he's a very very good QB ... not a mobile QB, but a Marino/Peyton type arm/accuracy

I think he had one drinking incident at Arkansas, I can tell you nobody down here knew he was such a head case ... cocky like P Rivers yes, but a 1st round talent dropping to 3rd based on a bunch of unconfirmed rumors baffled us ... STILL baffles us
