Big Log

This is my first year owning Coleman in a few leagues and I realize that there are a number of productive IDP's on the Jets but I am wondering what has caused the huge dropoff?

YR TM G TKL AST SACK FF FR INT PD FPT RANK VBD 2004 NYJ 16 67 21 2 0 1 4 12 114 16 8 2005 NYJ 16 84 37 0 0 0 2 7 118 11 13 2006 NYJ 5 13 6 0 0 0 0 1 17 134 0 TOT 37 164 64 2 0 1 6 20 249 0 21
As you can see he was top 20 in his first two years but with 19 total tackles in the first 5 games this year, he's all but disappeared. In larger dynasty leagues are owners still hanging on or is it time to dump and move on?Any info would be appreciated.TIA

Norton scouted this one perfectly in the preseason EOTG. Basically the scheme change to a 3-4 has killed Coleman's value. As JN pointed out, there are precious few free safeties that light up the box score. Even with the Jets defense logging lots of snaps during games, Coleman is too far off the line to really rack up the stats. See if you can trade him to a Jet fan or a guy who's still looking at last years #'s!

A few things are conspiring against Coleman this season:1 Skill setEric Mangini and the defensive coaching staff had questions about Eric Coleman's coverage skills early this offseason. As Rovers reported during mini-camps, the Jets were looking hard at replacing Coleman -- drafting safety Eric Smith in the third round and giving him a hard look during camp and trying disappointing CB Derrick Strait there during the pre-season. Coleman won the job but he's been playing in rotation.2 SchemeMangini tabbed Kerry Rhodes as the Rodney Harrison of the hybrid front scheme he brought with him from New England. It's Rhodes, for the most part, that gets the blitz assignments and the in-the-box opportunities against rushing teams. Also, it's much more difficult for a safety to get tackling opportunities in a 3-4 front behind two inside linebackers and the Jets have stayed in a 3-4 look most of the time despite gettting gashed by the run. Couple Coleman's struggles in coverage and lack of opportunity by scheme and you've got a not-so-good anymore fantasy option.3 HealthOn top of all else, Coleman had an appendectomy during camp. Wonders of modern medicine aside, there's a recovery period that even the most finely tuned professional athlete has to go through. The inevitable pain and weight loss associated with an appendectomy are different than the normal bumps and bruises a football player gets. It wouldn't surprise me if Coleman is still catching up after starting behind physically.Until Coleman gets a vote of confidence from his coaches or he shows he can impact the boxscore with coverage stats, it's time to drop him until an injury or scheme change provides him with more opportunity -- even in dynasty leagues.

He's also been in Mangini's dog house, and lost two starts to Strait, but remains in the rotation. I also raised a red flag on him in the preseason, but it was the rookie Smith that I thought would be stealing palying time, which hasn't happened... it's been Strait, who was the nickel last year.

I assure you that my intent isn't to rub your nose in it on this one, but if you play IDP leagues moving forward, Norton's preseason EOTG is a must read. Every year there are a couple of guys who shoot up my radar or drop off it thanks to his in depth research. Coleman is a guy I noted this year as I was originally depending on him to lock down my DB2 slot. After the preseason scouting report I unsuccessfully tried to trade him. Couldn't get any takers so instead I traded for his replacement and dropped Coleman. Happy to say that it didn't bite me.Now if Channing Crowder could just start justifying our collective expectations I'll wet myself with excitement.

It is usually my first read but I think Gerald Hayes clouded everything else. :)
