S. smith NY left practice today (1 Viewer)

I was in the pool

Just got a tweet that he pulled his pectoral area and left practice, more follow after tests. Unfortunate for rosters that lock tonight as we might not know anything more in the next few hours....

As someone who may need to start manningham this week, I would love more info when it becomes available.

Agreed. If it's a significant injury to Smith it could take Mario from a 'it might be a good idea to start him as your flex this week, given the matchup' to 'it might be a good idea to start him as your WR2 this week, given his matchup.'

Well this makes it easier to get MSW into my lineup this week. :goodposting:
MSW has really turned it on of late, no? Perhaps he fulfills on the preseason promise. Plus, he is playing Houston who can (1) score themselves leading to potential for more points all around and more importantly (2) is giving up a LOT of points to opposing pass offenses.

I know, but after getting burned with two freaking goose eggs earlier in the year, I haven't been able to let myself put him into my lineup. Now that one of my regular starters is out, I will start him, but I was having trouble figuring out which regular contributor to sit in favor of MSW this week.

Sorry for the hijack - this leads to a bigger question regarding how it affects Manning and the offense in general. Smith had finally hit his stride, but even before he had, the reason Nicks was open so often was the double teams that often covered Smith. Smith also plays a crucial third down role.

As a Giants fan, this does concern me as there could be some domino effect that might reach Manning and even Nicks - although Manningham would likely benefit and the TE's would look to benefit as well, especially in those third down situations.

WR Steve Smith hurt, 'huge loss' says Gilbride »

By Hank Gola

I just got back from the locker room, where there is great concern over WR Steve Smith. Smith suffered what is believed to be a strained pectoral muscle reaching for a ball at practice and his status for Sunday’s game is uncertain. He was sent for tests immediately.

“He had trouble driving his arms after the injury so he couldn’t continue but I don’t have anything else to tell you until the tests,” Tom Coughlin said.

“It was a ball in the middle where he extended,” Coughlin said.

Offensive coordinator Kevin Gilbride, noting that defenses are designed to stop Smith first, sounded as though he wasn’t counting on Smith Sunday.

“It’s a huge loss but we’ll make do,” he said.

“People have said it’s hard to cover him one on one inside so people have committed other people, additional resources” Gilbride said. “That either opens up running opportunities for us or opens up passing opportunities for other people.”

I think this helps Manningham and boss the most. Obviously Nicks will draw the double/triple teams. Fortunately, Nicks is a beast and it won't matter how many guys cover him haha.

Does this mean Barden slides into Mario's role in the slot, or does Mario stay in the slot and Barden goes outside.

Either way whomever there wr3 is he could have some value.

Coordinator Kevin Gilbride suggested that Ramses Barden will not have a major role even if Steve Smith (pectoral) misses Sunday's game. "We'll rotate and move guys so we're not pigeon holed with one guy," said Gilbride. "Depending on what the route is and what we're asking with the play, we can move different people in there." Keep Barden on the waiver wire. He'll split snaps with Duke Calhoun and H-back Travis Beckum.

Does this hurt or help Nicks ? Will defenses really focus on him and take him away ?
I think Nicks may just be a beast enough where it won't matter. Roddy white is the only dangerous WR on his team. Same with Andre Johnson (Walter and Jones don't make anyone game plan for them). Some receivers really benefit from another guy taking away coverage (maybe smallish, slot guys benefit from a deep threat) but others just get better with more targets. Nicks, IMO, is the kind of WR who you throw to in tight coverage because he has great ball skills and he is strong.

Time to see what Prince Ramses Barden is all about.
Had him on my dynasty team for 1 1/2 years. Unfortunately, I don't see him making an impact. Even if he sees the field and gets a few targets.

I think the benefactor will be Travis Beckum & Kevin Boss....all those who are seriously hurting for a TE this week, I'd take Boss first (higher floor), but I'd expect Beckum to be involved in the offense as well.

Giants are missing 2 starters on the Oline. Boss will be kept in to block more. The game against Dallas he'll be needed to help with Ware.

Not sure I agree with that...while the Giants have shuffled their O-line around but are still very talented and cohesive, I think you will see more of keeping bradshaw & jacobs in during pass situations. Have a back keep their eye on Ware, and you can send boss out.

Steve Smith moves to the slot when the Giants go to 3 WR sets.
