Sad News (1 Viewer)

Wow...that's terrible news. I know this sounds trivial, but I started him yesterday in the Den/SF Game and he helped lead me to a title. To think that now he's dead really puts things in perspective. Life is too short so live every day to its fullest. God Bless his family and loved ones...

Broncos cornerback shot and killed in drive-by

By ARNIE STAPLETON, AP Sports Writer

January 1, 2007

DENVER (AP) -- Denver Broncos cornerback Darrent Williams was shot and killed in a drive-by shooting in downtown Denver early Monday morning, police said.

Team spokesman Jim Saccomano said police called him about 3 a.m. local time from the scene of the shooting and told him three people had been shot and that Williams had been killed.

A little after 4 a.m. EST, a white Hummer limousine was sprayed with bullets from a vehicle that up along its side, said Sonny Jackson, spokesperson for the Denver Police Department.

Three people in the limousine were hit and were taken to area hospitals, where one man was pronounced dead, Jackson said. The other man and woman who were shot were not identified.

Jackson said police were searching for the suspects and interviewing witnesses.

Saccomano said he spoke with coach Mike Shanahan and others in the organization.

"Complete shock. We're speechless. It takes words away. A terrible tragedy," Saccomano said.

Williams, a second-round pick in the 2005 draft out of Oklahoma State, started nine games as a rookie due to injuries. This season, he took over as the starter for Lenny Walls alongside Champ Bailey, and was second on the team with four interceptions and tied for third with 86 tackles.

On Sunday against the 49ers, he had a sack, a forced fumble, and led the team with seven tackles.

Driveby shooting after coming out of a night club. I was a little confused as to whether they were walking or in the white limo mentioned. Two other people were shot as well, but he was the only fatality.

Really bad, my sympathies.

The radio here teased "...an NFL cornerback was shot and killed last night..." and I was 100% sure it was Pacman. Glad it wasn't, but sorry for Williams' family.

I can only repeat my wish, that the shooter are quickly brought to justice and that his future cellmate is a 300 pound Bronco fan

Awful

he will be missed...

In my Madden Fran mode.. its like 2016.. and hes still rated in the 90's..

In fact; I even had him on my Jets team during the 2009 season for 3 to 4 seasons..

This is awful

Sorry to hear this

RIP brother

Wow, shocking news this morning. I doubt this was a random act of violence. He must've done something to someone to piss someone off. This just goes to show you how we may know everything about a player on the field, but off it - we have no clue.

You're right we have no clue, so don't imply he must have done something to piss someone off.

You're right. For all we know he wasn't the target and he just happened to be at the wrong place at the wrong time. My first reaction to this was a negative notion and I apologize.

is it possible that someone was insane enough to do this in retribution for Denvers loss??
It's not impossible, just highly unlikely. The shooting is reported to have occurred at approximately 2:00 a.m. At that time, even the most enraged, drunken, angry fan would have been sound asleep. As stated earlier, Williams was reported to have maintained associations with questionable people. That is the first place to look for clues. Besides, if you were angry about the playoffs, would you really target the cornerback? :bag:

Fare you well, my honey, fare you well my only true one.

All the birds that were singing are flown, except you alone.

Going to leave this brokedown palace,

On my hand and knees, I will roll, roll, roll.

Make myself a bed in the waterside,

In my time, I will roll, roll roll.

In a bed, in a bed, by the waterside I will lay my head.

Listen to the river sing sweet songs, to rock my soul.

River going to take me, sing sweet and sleepy,

sing me sweet and sleepy all the way back home.

It's a far gone lullaby, sung many years ago.

Mama, mama many worlds I've come since I first left home.

Goin' home, goin' home, by the riverside I will rest my bones,

Listen to the river sing sweet songs, to rock my soul.

Going to plant a weeping willow,

On the bank's green edge it will grow, grow, grow.

Sing a lullaby beside the water,

Lovers come and go, the river roll, roll, roll.

Fare you well, fare you well, I love you more than words can tell,

Listen to the river sing sweet songs, to rock my soul.

R.I.P. Darrent...

is it possible that someone was insane enough to do this in retribution for Denvers loss??
As mentioned it's possible but a lot of crazy stuff happens on New Years Eve. The only time in my life I've seen someone killed was in a club in Fayetteville, AR on New Years Eve when a former Razorback basketball player named William Mills got involved in an altercation and about 15 minutes later the guy he fought with came back to the club firing random shots into the club before finally putting a gun to Mills head and killing him a few feet from were I was standing.

RIP Darrent. You were thrown into a tough situation with the best shutdown corner in the league on the other side, but you took it on with gusto and rose to the occasion more than once. I'll remember you for your blazing speed and hands ( two INT returns for TD in your tragically short career), and hardnosed approach to the game.

Peace to the Broncos organization and Darrent's family and friends during this unthinkably difficult time.

That's way too young to be dying. The guy had 2 kids.

Criss remembers that at one point in Williams' life, he gravitated to what Criss describes as "the wrong crowd." He says Williams' minister warned him to straighten out, and he did.

Criss says that Williams matured during his four years at Oklahoma State. Criss says that by Williams' junior year, "everything was 'yes sir, no sir.'"

Williams has two young children in the Fort Worth area
An opinion piece from Oklahomastate.scout.com:
Darrent joined his good friend Vernon Grant in playing fearless. Little guys aren't supposed to be that physical, but Darrent and Vernon were. Vernon was more the team player, while Darrent was the star. He wanted to be the star; the player everybody pointed at.

His attitude was infectious. You simply couldn't keep from smiling and laughing when Darrent was around.

It was that attitude that often got Darrent into trouble. He ended his Oklahoma State career on the wrong side of then head coach Les Miles. Miles wasn't happy with Darrent's return or decision not play again coming off an injury. Darrent wasn't afraid to take the coach on and, as happens, when you take on the coach the player lost.

Off the field Darrent was a late night guy that always wanted to be around the action. He had been in trouble a few times with the Broncos staff for being out and about too much. He survived the streets of Fort Worth growing up in a rough area. Stillwater provided a fairly safe haven for him in college.

The drive-by shooting that ended his life took place in the wee hours of Monday morning in Denver.
A few more details:
A little after 2 a.m., a white Hummer limousine was fired on from a vehicle that pulled up along its side, police spokesman Sonny Jackson said. As many as a dozen bullet holes were visible on the driver's side of the vehicle. One window was blown out and four others had bullet holes.

Three people in the limo were hit and taken to hospitals, where one man was pronounced dead, Jackson said. The other man and woman who were shot were not identified.

Darrent Williams had the Monday night countdown show on AM950, and always was VERY respectful and timely.

A great kid with a good heart. This saddens me deeply.

RIP DW.

My thoughts go out to his family, friends and loved ones. What a hideous way for any family to start the new year

The NFL lost one of its brightest and most ethusiastic young players. He will be missed in the game and with the fans, like us, who were able to appreciate him on the field and off the field. Did alot for kids in his hometown to not get involved with the gang community, a mistake he made as a child and what ultimately may have cost him his life.

We lost a great person and player today.

Prayers to the family; but rest assured he's in a better place

RIP.

They just said on "Cold Pizza" that Javon Walker may have been in the vehicle with Williams.
Javon didn't get shot did he?
The report on ESPN said that 2 other men in the Hummer were shot also but obviously not fatally. Didn't say if there were only those 2 others in the limo total or if there were others in there that weren't hit. I was wondering if Williams would've been with teammates or not, we'll all find out together I suppose. And as for motives or Williams' actions possibly leading to the shooting it is equally as likely that any of the others with Williams was the target or instigator or participant in any confrontation that could've led to this. If there even was anything that led to this. Howver it went down it's terrible for DW's family, friends, teammates and especially his kids.

This is very sad. I really feel for his family and Bronco fans right now.

Just out of curiosity, was there any part of the game which turned the events the 49ers way that were part of his coverage yesterday.

I'm just wondering if maybe this was a bitter fan who may have known where he was or ran into him while drunk.

This is so messed up. RIP
un f'n believable as a Broncos fan this is so disheartening, this kid had so much promise, such a good kid too.what a person from what he battled in his early days of being lured into gangs, man they always take the good ones.RIP Darrent.

Just watching the Denver feeds for news right now, word is that there was an altercation with somebody in the club named Safari. Darrent was not the one that had the altercation. Once they left the bar, 16 people were in that limo including Javon Walker. Darrent happened to be sitting on the window side that was riddled with bullets. They do know that one struck his neck, don't know if that was the one that killed him. Javon was not shot.

Take it for what it's worth, it's all unconfirmed reports as of now.
